Chapter 2: A Morning's Jog
Amber jogged along the tall chain-link fence that surrounded the school's stadium, wishing she could go run on the padded track instead of the uneven terrain covering the school as well as the hole island she was currently living on. Even though the fence was no challenge to jump, she didn't want to get in trouble again with the principle. She had had enough of him the first time she meet him three months ago when she first arrived. She didn't remember how she got here though. Just that one day she had gone to bed at her house, thinking tomorrow she would travel to her new school but the next morning she woke up in her dorm room with a note next to her bed reading "Welcome to White Horse Academy." Thinking her foster parents had wanted to get rid of her earlier than planned and brought her here over night, she shook it off without another thought.
Her brother had gone here before and had given her a tour of the place when she was a few years younger. The principle, however, still insisted that he, himself, showed her around the campus before she adjourned to her dorm for the rest of the day.
She remember at the end of the tour as he saw her to her dorm building, he asked her what her gift was besides natural beauty. She had forced a laugh, a little creped out by his aura but unworried all the same, and told him that she hoped to never reveal them to anyone while she attended. At first he was disappointed but quickly recovered and told her to sleep tight before walking away from her building and into the dark night.
The school was an old campus but always appears as if it was just built and opened this school year. Walls always had fresh paint on them, not a speck of rust could be seen anywhere, nor was there to be any dust in any high corner of any room. And if you left a candy wrapper of pop can on the floor, after a while it would be gone as if the floor had eaten it.
Many students, including Amber's roommate, were somewhat freaked out by the disappearance of trash left on the floor and the newly refurbished and decorated halls and rooms that filled the school constantly. But Amber knew the secret behind the mysterious house. For with her keen sense of hearing, her ears did not fool her mind like her eyes would. Her ears told her that the house was indeed alive and actually swallowed trash up into the carpet and sent to some other place in the house. Everyday, she would hear the house take the candy wrapper or soda but she could not see it happening.
A hurried wind rushed across the field, dragging leaves and twigs behind it. She had been running around the small island since seven this morning. Now that it was almost eight, her breathing was labored and muscles ached. But regardless of her exhaustion her body ached to rise with the twirling wind and land somewhere among the clouds.
She knew that this could not happen though.
As soon as she reached the edge of the stadium fence, Amber slowed her pace to a steady walk and turned back toward her dorm building. The sun had stretched its rays across the island but it had just begun its journey to the top of the sky. Still, a unsettling calm rested in the air, similar to the time before a storm hits. Amber knew one was coming, she could hear the ocean being blown about violently far in the distance from where she was walking and even over her heavy breathing.
She shivered. Not because of the quickly chilling air, but because of the coming fury that would soon be upon the island. She was not always afraid of these violent storms. When she was younger, her brother had died on one of these stormy nights, but she refused to be afraid. For her brother told her to not be afriad of anything and she would continue to do so.
Her name being called out from across the grass field between the stadium and her dorm snapped her out of her trance headed down memory lane.
"Amber!"
"Yes Aliea. I am over her." Amber waved her arms toward the lost looking red-head.
Aliea spotted her and jogged toward her. "I have been looking everywhere for you. Where the hell have you been?"
"I have been getting some peace and quite without you." Amber said happily.
"How amusing, now come on. Did you forget that practice was moved to morning sessions?"
"Actually Aliea-"
"Come on we need to go. You are already dressed to play and I have your gear right here so we can go ahead and head over to the stadium now." Aliea grabbed Ambers arm and steered her back across the grass.
Amber allowed Aliea to lead her to the field but when the empty turf came into sight she stopped and let go of amber's arm, a confused look rested upon her face. A smile rested on Amber's quiet face then her friend turned toward her with her own smile.
"Ha ha, this is oh so funny. Hey guess what Amber?"
"What Aliea?"
"It's Saturday you know, meaning we don't really have practice. I was testing you to see if you remembered what day it was. But since we made it all the way over here without you saying a word, you failed miserably. Good thing I remembered for you."
She laughed out loud as she walked past Amber toward the dorm, their equipment now dragging behind her.
Amber laughed softly then followed her to their room.
From on a thick tree branch, Mako scoffed as she watched through her binoculars Amber and her roommate walk to their dorm room. She would never understand why such a powerful person would interact with the weak so simple-mindedly. She was sure Amber knew how much stronger she was compared to the red-head but that didn't stop her from befriending her roommate the first day they met.
When the girls were out of sight, Mako lowered her binoculars and sat there for a moment to be sure they had gone up to there room and weren't hanging around the family room.
Satisfied that she would not be seen, she jumped from the tree and landed gracefully on the hard dirt ground. As she rose she heard footsteps behind her. Without turning around she greeted her guest. "Art. What is it that you want?"
Behind her, a tall boy with jet black hair that was neatly spiked stepped between the large ferns. He moved like a shadow and had a strong presence that made most people crumble instantly or gawk at him.
She turned toward him, trying not to be one of those people but it was difficult even for her strong mind. As he spoke to her, his eyes, one forest green and one lightning blue, starred deep into her mind. "The professor says he will arrive tonight."
"Is that all? I thought you had something important to tell me since you came all the way out here to see me." Mako smiled flirtingly at him.
To her surprise he leaned close to her, his lips brushing her ear. "Trust me, it wasn't a long walk." He pulled away and disappeared into the shadows of the trees.
Weak kneed, Mako stood there for a second before she realized she was holding her breath. She exhaled slowly then shook her head to rid her mind of his presence. She hated how he was able to get inside her mind so easily and roam freely, pulling plugs and connecting the wrong things. One day she would bring him to his knees begging for her instead of him watching her beg. But all the same he was right. The new boy would be her tonight and she was required to acknowledge him when he arrived. This time she didn't plan on losing her cool like she did with Amber. That she was certain of.
A/N: Not as exciting as the first chapter and I would like to say sorry but the next few chapters should be more action filled. Thanks for sticking with it.
