I woke up at 8am the next morning. The sun was shining bright in my bedroom. Getting up I went into the bathroom and brushed my teeth.

After that I walked back in my bedroom to my closet to get dressed. I found a faded pair of hip huggers and a baby blue tank top. I put those and my shoes on, I grabbed my white pullover.

After grabbing my cell phone and purse I headed downstairs.

Maria was sitting at the kitchen table texting someone on her phone.

"Hey are you going to Jennifer?" She asked me.

"Yeah, I'm heading out in a couple minutes." I told her as I grabbed the orange juice out of the fridge.

"OK, well I have to go and pick up my car, but after that I'm going to the hospital." She said as she stood up.

I didn't say anything just as I grabbed a glass out of the cubbord. I sipped the juice, while she walked out of the room. Ten minutes later I headed

out to my Suburban. I got in and started the drive to the hospital. As I was pulling into the parking lot my cell phone beeped at me. After I found a

parking space, I pulled it out of my purse. It said there was a new text message. I opened it and realized it was from Patrick.

'Hey where are you?' It said.

I closed the message and hit the number 4 on speed dial.

"Hey." He answered. "

Hi, you know I never write you back when you send me those." I told him as I sat in my truck.

"Yeah, I know but I didn't want to wake you up if you were sleeping." He said and yawned.

"Oh, well I just got to the hospital. I'm about to call my mom and dad." I said to him.

"Oh OK, well do you want me to come up there with you?" He asked.

"No your fine, go back to sleep. I can tell you just woke up." I said. "If I need you then I'll call you."

"Are you sure?"

"Yeah, don't worry about me." I heard him sigh, "OK, but remember I'm here if you need me"

"I know." I said and hung up the phone.

After taking a big breath, I pushed my moms speed dial. It went to the answering machine. I left her a message telling her what happened and

climbed out of the truck. I walked into the hospital and up to the front desk. After getting Jennifer's room number I walked to the elevator. I

stepped inside and a young lady stepped inside behind me. She looked very nervous and she looked to be about 8 or 9 months pregnant. She

smiled at me and pushed the button for her floor. We stood in silence as the elevator moved upwards. My stop was first and I waited for the

doors to open. I stepped out of the elevator and made my way to Jennifer's room. When I got there, I knocked and then went inside. Jennifer was awake. Laying on her back with her head turned towards the window.

"Hey." I said quietly as I walked up to her bed.

She turned her head a fraction of the way to look at me. She said nothing then turned back to the window. I stood there wondering what to say.

I looked around the room and it was very bland. Just the bed a chair and table, one picture on the wall and next to the bed were machines. Jennifer's wrists had bandages on them, and an IV was hooked up to her hand.

Turning back to Jennifer I said, "What were you thinking doing that to yourself?"

Again she didn't say anything. I went on. "Do you know what I went through finding you that way? What if you were dead? Did you ever think about how Maria or I would have felt if you were, and we found you?"

I didn't mean to go on about it, but I couldn't really stop myself. I had to know why she would do such a thing to herself.

"Why did you do it Jennifer?" I asked her as she continued to stare out of the window.

She didn't answer me, nor acknowledge anything I said. I stood there just looking at her. I could see the tears pooling in her eyes. I had some of my own building up to.

"Look at me." I told her sitting next to her on the bed. She didn't, she just silently cried. We sat like that for awhile until a nurse walked in.

"Hello you must be Jennifers sister. My name is Nora I am her nurse." She said as she walked over to the bed.

I simply nodded at her and stepped back from the bed as she checked Jennifer's wrists.

"Ok Jenn, everything seems to look ok so far. But your still not going home yet. If you need anything just push the call button." The nurse said and turned to walk out of the room.

I followed her out. "Nora, when do you think she will be able to come home?" I asked her.

"Oh dear, Its not up to me to decide. It depends on what the doctor thinks. And as of right now I can tell you she wont be going anywhere for a couple of days."

I nodded, "Has she talked to anybody since she got here? She didn't say one word to me."

"I haven't heard a peep out of her. But I think it might just be from the stress and all. She should be OK within the next couple of days."

"Thank you Nora." I told her and walked back in the room.

I sat down in the chair and tried to talk to Jennifer four more times within the next 3 hours. Maria showed up for about 45minutes but then she left, because Jennifer wouldn't talk to her.

She didnt say a word to me. I told her I was leaving and that I would be back later. I left the hospital and when I got outside I leaned against my SUV.

My stomach was growling so I climbed inside. I turned on my cell phone and I had 4 new voice-mails. The first one was from Patrick wondering how everything was going. I skipped it and went to the next one.

It was my mother she sounded very worried. But she said that she would check in with me later because they couldn't leave to come back. I scoffed and erased it and waited for the next.

It was Patrick again saying that he was going to Josh's house and if I needed him to call his cell. The last one was from Devan, which surprised me.

His said, "Hey Viv, I heard what happened to your sister and I was wondering if she was OK. Also I was wondering how you were doing. If you want to talk then call me. I hope you guys doing OK though. Oh, and I was going to ask you if you want to go out to dinner with me tonight? I know its not the best time to ask but it may take your mind off of your sister for awhile. Let me know."

After that I hung up the phone. I couldn't help the smile that came onto my face. It disappeared quickly as I thought of Jennifer laying on the bathroom floor. I shook my head and headed out of the parking lot. I decided not to go home because being there I would not be able to think about anything other than Jennifer.

So I headed to the local diner, which is my favorite place to eat at. When I pulled into the parking lot I noticed that it was quite packed with cars. I saw a car leaving close to the doors so I stopped and waited.

When I parked I got and headed inside. Instantly when I walked in the door I could smell the sweet smells of the food coming from the kitchen. The waitress was standing at a podium seating people.

Her name is Maria also, shes very nice. She told me before that she graduated from my school the year before I started. I stood in line and waited.

When It was my turn she smiled. "Well Hi there Viv. Just one today?"

I nodded, "Yes."

"OK I have your favorite booth is open so follow me." She said and started to through the diner.

There was a lot of people, I noticed a table full of people from school. I ducked my head and hurried behind her. The booth she was leading me to was at the back of the diner. There was tables in the center of the room, and booths lined up along the edges. The booth we walked up to was kiddy corner from the restroom.

"Here you go." She said and placed the menu on the table.

"Thanks Maria." I told her and she walked away.

I opened the menu and just looked. I already knew what I wanted but it gave me something to do with my hands. Also I could hide behind it if I seen anyone from school wander over.

I peeked around the menu and looked to where I heard loud laughing and giggling. A lot of Maria's (my sister) friends from school were sharing two large tables. I counted nine people in the group, and wondered where my sister was.

Just then I heard a familiar voice near the bathrooms. I looked over and Devan walked out of the bathroom talking on a cell phone.

"Yeah I know.. No I'll try but I'm not promising anything. Alright dude.. Yup see ya." Then he hung up the phone.

I moved the menu so that it covered my face. I heard him sigh and start to walk away. Just then the waiter walked up. His name is Sean and he also goes to my school.

He's tall with blonde hair and a sweet face. A little on the skinny side, but nice enough.

"Hey Vivian, I haven't seen you in a while." He said loudly.

I set the menu down and noticed Devan stop walking and turn to look at me.

"Dammit." I muttered.

"What was that?" He asked leaning closer.

"Nothing, how are you Sean?" I asked him.

"Good thanks, what can I get you?" He asked.

"I'll just have a cherry coke and a basket of chicken fingers. With barbecue sauce." I told him.

"Make that two but with a regular coke." Devan said as he sat down across from me.

I glared at him. "OK, I'll be back in a few minutes with your drinks." Sean said as he grabbed my menu and walked off.

"Well I didnt expect to see you here." Devan said looking at me.

"Good, you can forget that you saw me and be on your merry way." I told him taking my phone out of my purse.

"Ouch." He said rubbing his chest. "Low blow."

"Mhm, and there's more where that came from." I told him as I wrote Patrick a text message.

I told him about what happened at the hospital and where I was. Closing my phone I looked at Devan. He was staring at me.

"What?" I asked him irritated.

"Nothing, hows your sister doing?" He asked running a hand through his hair.

"She's alive." I said shortly.

"That's good." He said and sighed. "Look I know we kind of got off on the wrong foot but can you cut me a break? Or at least give me a chance to show you that I'm not the asshole you think I am."

"Whats the point?" I said in a bored voice.

"The point is that I want to get to know you a little bit, you know maybe become friends even." He said and the way he said it almost made me feel sorry for him.

"OK." I said.

His eyes got big, "Really?"

"Sure." I said and just then Sean came back with our drinks.

I thanked him and took a long drink.

"So what are you doing tonight?" He asked me as he set his drink aside.

"Going to see my sister again."

"Well after that do you want to hang out with me for a little bit. Like I told you on your message. I was wondering if it would be alright if we could go out to dinner." He grinned.

"I don't know Devan." I told him.

"Oh come on, what else do you have to do?" He asked. I opened my mouth but really couldn't think of anything I had to do afterwards.

"See you got nothing." He said still smirking. I shrugged, "Oh well"

Just then our food came. I thanked Sean and started to eat my chicken fingers. We didn't say anything while we ate. I looked up a couple times and caught Devan looking at me.

"What?" I asked him annoyed.

"Nothing." He said and smirked.

I rolled my eyes and pushed my basket away. Devan finished his and sat back.

"Man those things are good." He said.

"I know their my favorite." I told him grabbing money out of my purse.

"No, I got it." Devan said reaching into his back pocket.

"I can pay for my own." I told him.

"I said I got it." He said looking me in the eyes. Just then Sean walked up with the check.

"Was I right guessing that this was on one bill?" He asked us.

Before I could say anything Devan took the checkbook away from him.

"Yes you were." He said and put in some bills.

I thanked him and Sean and stood up from the booth. I headed out to my truck and when I got in Devan got in the passenger seat.

"What are you doing?" I asked him raising my eyebrows.

"Riding with you, looks like my ride took off." He told me and grinned.

I didn't say anything just pulled out of the spot. After I turned out of the diner I headed for his house.

"No dont go there. Lets go to your place." He said noticing where I was driving.

"No I cant go back there." I told him.

"Why not?" He asked quietly.

"Because I just cant. Don't push it." I told him as I stopped at a red light.

"Ok." He said and we grew silent.

I drove around and ended up going to a near by lake. It had a park right on the shore with picnic tables and showers. I parked and we sat in the car. There was two other cars in the parking lot and I could see a family with a couple kids sitting at one of the picnic tables. Another family was swimming in the designated swimming area.

After a couple minutes I got out of the car and took off my over shirt. It was pretty hot out already. I started to walk down to the water. You had to cross a bridge before you got to the swimming area by the dock. I heard footsteps behind me and knew that Devan followed me. After taking off my shoes I sat at the end of the dock and dipped my toes in.

"What is this place?" Devan said as he sat next to me.

"May-field Park. I like to come here and just sit sometimes. Its relaxing." I told him looking out at the boats sailing on the water.

"It looks like a nice lake. Any good for swimming?" He asked me also dipping his toes in the water.

"I wouldn't know. I've never swam in it before." I tucked my hair behind my ear.

"Why not?" He asked squinting because of the sun.

"It scares me. I've only ever swam in a lake one time. When I get in the water I freak out. Its like I am terrified to look down into the water. For fear of what I might see. After that one time, I've never done it again. I always think I'm going to see a body or something. I know it sounds crazy..."

Devan cut me off shaking his head.

"No, its just fear of the unknown. You don't know whats under the surface and your scared of what you might find. I understand it. I've never met anyone who was scared of water before but I understand." He said chuckling.

"Its not that I'm afraid of water, its just dark water, or water that's too deep. I cant take it. I'll swim in a swimming pool with no problem. But to go in water like this... I cant do it." I told him looking back out at the water.

I could feel him looking at me. I turned my head to look at him. He had that same smirk on his face.

"What?" I asked him.

"Nothing, its just.. your so unique." I was about to say something but he said hurriedly.

"Don't get me wrong its not a bad thing but I just cant figure you out." He was staring into my eyes.

"Well I guess that's a good thing." I smiled.

He continued to stare at me and I couldn't seem to break the gaze.

I felt myself leaning into him. We were inches apart and I could feel his breath on my lips. He reached his hand up and cupped the side of my face. I closed my eyes and leaned into his touch.

His lips barely brushed mine and I heard a shout of laughter and felt a splash. I screamed and looked around.

One of the little kids who were swimming jumped off the dock right next to us.

I heard Devan chuckle, "Hey thanks kid." I glared at him. "Not funny"

"Oh yes it was, your soaked." He looked down at the front of my t-shirt. I looked down too and noticed my tank top was almost molded to my body.

"Eyes up perv." I said and tried to fix my shirt.

I stood up and began to walk back to my truck. I unlocked the back door and grabbed my duffel bag. I thanked myself for forgetting it in there. I opened it and pulled out a new t-shirt. Devan came walking up and looked at the shirt in my hands.

"You gonna change right here?" He asked with an eyebrow up. "No, but I am going to change in my truck. Turn around." I told him and heard him grumble as I shut the door. I kept an eye on him as I quickly changed my shirt. I reached in the bad and pulled out a pair of jean shorts and slipped those on too.

After changing I opened the door and climbed out the back.

"OK." Devan turned around and looked me up and down. "I liked the other look better, but if you wear those shorts with your tank." He whistled. "Hot."

I laughed and threw my wet shirt at him. "Get in the truck Casanova."

He winked and walked around to the passenger side.
