I drove Devan back to his house so he could shower and change. As he went to shower I walked down to Patricks house. He called my cell on the way to Devans house and said that he was home.
The door was wide open and I could hear music coming from the kitchen. I walked in and called out to him. No answer. So I headed towards the kitchen as I entered it I started laughing so hard.
Patrick was standing at the stove covered in what looked like flour. He had it all over his face and arms and down the front of his shirt. He saw me laughing and scowled.
"Don't laugh, I am having a very bad moment right now." He said and I laughed harder.
"What.. di.. did.. you do? Get into a fight with the bag of flour?" I managed as I held my aching sides.
"Nooo, I'm trying to bake a damn cake. But I cant figure out how to make the damn thing." He said as he picked up the box of cake mix.
"Um.. you have to read the directions. It tells you how to do it step by step." I told him giggling. "And what did you do? Roll in the mix or something?"
He threw the box at me, which I caught and wiped the tears out of my eyes.
"No, but I'll tell you one thing. This is the last time I ever try to help my mom out. She asked me to bake this cake for her, because she needs it for a 'Girls night out party' tonight. She said that she had to take care of a couple things and that she doesn't have time. So I volunteered." He said as he took a rag and washed his face off.
"Oh geez." I said and walked over to him.
"I'll help you." I said and started putting the remaining ingredients in.
Twenty minutes later the cake was in the oven and Patrick and I were sitting on his couch.
"So your actually going on a date with him?" He asked after I told him about Devan and I.
"Yeah, if you could call it that. Besides I don't have anything else to do anyways. Except to go to the hospital." I said as I played with my phone.
"Well just be careful around that guy, and if you need me call me."
"I will." I told him with a smile. "What are you doing today?" I asked him.
"I don't know yet I'm probably gonna go over to Josh's house. He's throwing another party." He said smirking.
"Oh so your going just to get laid?" I asked joking. He blushed and his ears turned red.
"YOU ARE!" I yelled throwing a pillow at him.
"No,I'm not going 'just' to get laid, even though its a good possibility." He smirked again.
"Who?" I asked curious.
He looked me in the eye, "Oh no, I am not telling you."
"Oh come on, you can tell me. Everybody is going to know anyways."
He stood up from the couch. "So when they figure it out then I guess you'll find out."
"Ugh, come on butt head I wanna know." I said throwing a pillow at him again.
" No." He laughed and threw it back.
"Fine." I said and crossed my arms over my chest and stuck my bottom lip out.
"Oh come on, don't do that again." He waited and I stayed silent staring out of the window.
"Fine you can do that all day and I'm still not going to tell you." He said and sat back down.
I looked at him and saw he was serious.
"Fine." I said and turned back around.
A couple minutes passed and we were both still silent.
"Fine you little turd." He cried standing up. "If you really must know its..."
I never heard the name because at that point I heard another voice coming from the front porch.
"Hey guys." Devan said and Patrick told him to come in.
I felt my breath catch. He looks so hot, hes wearing a plain white t-shirt that shows off his chest and broad shoulders. Dark blue jeans with white K Swiss tennis shoes. And a fitted Detroit Tigers Baseball hat.
'Totally drool worthy.' I thought to myself.
I stared at him as he walked inside and sat on the couch. I couldn't take my eyes off of him even as Patrick ran his hand in front of my face.
"Earth to Viv." I heard and looked over at him.
"Hmm?" I said.
"God at least have the decency to say something to the guy before you mentally undress him." Patrick said laughing.
I looked over at Devan and he was smiling. Feeling the blush creep up on my cheeks I grabbed a pillow and whacked Patrick upside the head with it.
"Shut up." I told him laughing.
"Hey don't do that. I swear brain damage is in my near future." He said rubbing the spot on his head.
Devan and I laughed at him. Then we heard Patricks phone ringing and he got up to go answer it. I tried looking anywhere but at Devan. I grabbed the remote and turned on the country music videos.
'All summer long' By Kid Rockwas on. I listened to the song and a couple of times I could hear Patricks voice as he yelled at someone. I looked at Devan and raised my eyebrows.
He smirked and stood up to come and sit next to me. I folded my legs under me and shifted away from him. I could feel him looking at me so I turned my head and met his eyes.
"What?" I said glancing from him to the TV. He didn't say anything just reached over and I felt his hand on my chin. With his other hand he grabbed the front of his hat and turned it around.
He turned my face to look at him. I looked into his eyes and licked my lips. He groaned in response and crashed his lips to mine.
"That kills me." He said after we broke apart.
"What? This?" I said and licked my lips again.
Again he groaned and I smiled. He leaned over and kissed me again. One hand on my cheek and the other on my side by my stomach. I reached out and grabbed the back of his neck pulling him closer to me.
I opened my mouth when I felt his tongue seeking entry. Shivers ran down my back, legs and arms, as we kissed. I was very aware of Devans hand on my side and I reached my free hand around to his shoulders.
A minute later I heard Patrick slam the phone down and curse. I pushed Devan away from me and leaned back against the couch all the while panting slightly. Devan looked at me and his face was a little flushed.
He smiled at me, and then Patrick walked into the room. Neither of us said anything as he paced behind the couch. Not being able to take it any longer I asked him.
"Whats wrong?... Whats wrong? I'll tell you whats wrong." He said and looked at me fuming.
"The two idiots that I call my mom and dad are letting my cousins Tommy and Jessie come up here for school."
"Oh, is that the hot one and his brother?" I asked him smiling.
"Yes!" He said giving me a dirty look. He hates that I think his cousin is hot. Even though hes really not that cute. I just mess with Patrick about it.
I looked at him, "OK so this is why your all pissed off?" I said not getting it.
"But why, I thought that you liked your cousins." I said.
"I deal them because they are family, but with them two going to school up here..." He trailed off and sat on the love seat. "Its going to make my life hell. When those two are together it just means trouble."
"Well dont worry about it, I'm sure everything will turn out alright." I told him trying to loosen him up. He finally nodded and looked from me to Devan.
"Why were you two so quiet in here?" I felt the blush creep up on my cheeks and tried to cover it up by a fake sneeze.
"What do you mean? We were talking. You were to busy yelling to here us." I said, I could feel Devan looking at me but I avoided his gaze.
Patrick looked between the two of us and sighed. The room grew quiet and I couldn't take it any longer.
Standing up I turned to Patrick. "Alright well I'm going to go to the hospital now. Have fun getting lai..." I stopped and corrected myself.
"I mean at the party." Devan stood as well. Patrick gave me a evil look and stood suddenly.
"Look you little brat."
"Uh oh." I said and ran out of the house. Patrick hot on my heels.
I just reached the sidewalk when I was hoisted into the air and thrown over his shoulder.
"Let go of me." I tried to scream but it came out more as a laugh.
Patrick laughed as he held my legs to keep me from falling.
"Ha ha, this is what you get for bringing that up again." He said and playfully slapped my backside. I was shocked.
"Oh you horny little toad! Aren't you going to get enough with whatever girl later. You have to go and smack my.. ahhhh."
I screamed as Patrick tossed me on my butt in the grass.
"Well I guess i deserved that." Patrick laughed. I stood up and saw Devan walking out of the house with a smirk on his face.
"I'll talk to you later Patty." I said turning towards my car, but not before I caught his glare. As I got into my truck Devan got in the passenger side. I looked at him with my eyebrow raised.
"What? Don't think your going alone so that you have an excuse to ditch me tonight." He said putting his seat belt on. Not saying anything I started the SUV. We were quiet on the way to the hospital. I was getting more nervous about going to see Jennifer. After parking I reached for my seat belt. At the same time Devan reached over and put his hand over mine.
I looked up at him curiously. "Look, I know I don't know your sister but everything will be OK." He said trying to comfort me.
"I'm fine." I lied and got out of the truck. We walked silently into the hospital. When we got to Jennifer's room Devan stopped.
"I'll wait out here for you." I nodded and walked inside. It was the same as yesturday. Jennifer was lying on the bed just staring out of the window.
"Hey Jenn." I told her as I sat on the edge of her bed. Again no answer.
"Look I know how hard this must be for you. But you have to talk to me. I'm your sister you cant just shut me out." I told her my voice breaking slightly.
I saw tears pool into her eyes, but she still said nothing. We stayed quiet for about twenty minutes until her nurse walked in. It was the same nurse from yesterday.
She smiled at me and gestured between Jenn and me. I shook my head understanding her. She frowned and wrote on her chart. After checking her vitals. She turned to walk out and I followed her.
"Has anyone else been here to see her?" I asked the nurse.
"Yes, a girl and a guy was here earlier. I believe it was your sister, you three look so much alike. The guy was a younger man. I'm not sure if he was her boyfriend or not. He didn't say and I didn't ask. He stayed for a few hours this morning. He actually just left about a half hour ago."
I glanced over at Devan he walked up to us when we came out of the room.
"Yeah that was probably Dustin her boyfriend. Since she wont talk to me I guess we're going to leave." I told the nurse. She nodded.
"I'm just going to say goodbye and we can go." I said to Devan.
"Take your time, I'm in no hurry." He said with a smile.
I smiled back and walked back in her room. I tried to get her to say something to me, but she didn't say a word. After telling her goodbye I walked out and joined Devan.
The walk outside was all a blur. I couldnt get the pictures of Jennifer laying in a pool of blood out of my head. We reached my SUV and I realized Devan spoke to me.
"Give me your keys." He said. I looked down at our hands and didn't even realize they were joined. I let go of his hand and reached in my purse for my keys.
The only reason why I'm letting him drive is because I have tears in my eyes, and I don't trust myself behind the wheel at the moment. I got into the passenger seat, and leaned against the door.
Devan reached over and took my hand again. He drove back towards his house. After pulling in the driveway we sat there for a couple minutes. I wiped off my face which was soaked with tears. I looked at Devan and caught him looking at me.
"I'm fine." I told him getting out of the truck. Devan got out and we walked up to his house. He told me that nobody was home and he couldn't think of anywhere else to go at the moment.
His house was nice, in the living room there was pictures up on the wall by the fireplace. A big screen tv and video games sat in one corner of the room. In the center there was a huge leather sofa and love seat.
He walked through the living room into the kitchen. I followed him at a slow pace.
I saw him take two bottles of water out of the fridge. After handing one to me he took a drink of his. I took a sip of mine and it cooled my throat. We stood there for a few minutes not saying anything.
I could feel him looking at me and I looked up at him. He had a worried look on his face. I tried for a smile and didn't pull it off well. He sighed and stepped closer to hug me.
I set the bottle on the counter and hugged him back. I dont know how long we stayed like that. I pulled back when I felt him kiss the side of my head. I looked at him and he leaned in and kissed me.
I pulled him tighter and kissed him back. After several minutes he pulled back and rested his forehead on mine. His breathing was shallow. So was mine.
"Viv..." He started to say but was cut off by his phone ringing. He pulled it out of his pocket and answered it.
"Yeah, no I'm at my house... What?... Well when are they getting there? No OK, well I'll be there in a bit. OK see ya." He hung up the phone.
"Are you up for a party?" He asked me tucking a stray hair behind my ear.
"Yeah, might as well. We were supposed to do something anyways." I said leaning against the counter.
"OK well if your hungry then we can go get some food and then go."
"No I'm not really hungry. If you are we can still go though."
"Nah those chicken fingers filled me up. Maybe later." He said. I nodded and we both headed out of his house. He went to go get in his car and I told him we'd take mine.
"OK if that's what you want"
He got in the drivers side and I got shotgun. I turned on the music to my favorite country station. He looked at me weird.
"You listen to country?" He looked shocked.
"Yeah, so?" I told him.
"Nothing, you just don't seem the type is all. I pictured you more as a rocker chick." He said smirking.
"Well for your information I do listen to rock. I like a wide variety of music. But country is my favorite." I told him leaning back in the seat.
"That's good, I like country to. If I didn't my mom would probably disown me." He said with a big smile.
"Well you get points in my book for liking it. Not many guys do"
"Well I'm not the same as every guy around here."
"Yeah aint that the truth." I said laughing.
"Oh I see how it is." He said faking a mad face. "Oh yeah, and how is it?" I asked smirking back.
He sat there for a minute. "Umm, I have no clue." He said laughing.
I laughed to and reached over to grab his hand. He looked surprised for a moment then just smiled. 'He sure is cute'I thought to myself. A Sugarland song came on and I started singing along. Devan looked at me with wide eyes.
"I did'nt know you could sing like that." He said.
"What? Do I sound bad?" I asked with a frown.
"No, actually you can sing really good." He smiled. I felt myself blush and looked out the window. I couldn't get the smile off my face the rest of the drive.
