Chapter Two
The rain finally let up and Suki stepped outside. She looked up to the sky and instantly blocked out her surroundings. The sky had been dark but now it was light. She saw a formless, black shape falling. By the time she compared what she was seeing her dream it was too late, everything went black.Kaosu was now walking through the city with haste. She was looking for something her father had recently lost. She wouldn't admit it, but she was the one who had actually lost it. She 'borrowed' it all the time before the key was lost. That had yet to be found. Now the book was gone. Both losses were her fault.
Suki awoke to a strange beeping sound. She opened her eyes and found that she was in a hospital. The beeping sound was from a heart monitor.
She sat up and hit the call button next to the bed. About a minute later a doctor came into the room.
"So you're finally awake." the raven haired woman smiled, "I'm Dr. Neko." She stood at the edge of the bed staring down a Suki with soft, green eyes.
"How-why am I here?" Suki asked as she rubbed the back of her head.
"Eyewitnesses said that you suddenly fainted, you've been unconscious for exactly a week." Dr. Neko explained as she looked at a chart, "we didn't find any form of identification on you and we need a name for the records, first and last." She looked up as she straightened her glasses and blinked her dark eyes.
"Sure I'm Suki-" she suddenly looked confused as if she was rudely cut off. She closed her onyx eyes and brought a hand to her forehead. Now that she thought about it, she didn't know her last name. She didn't know of her family or any friends. Her whole life was a big blank, though there were some pictures in her mind that were hazy, lost memories maybe. Nothing came to her mind except the name Kaosu. Who was Kaosu? Why did that name seem relevant?
"There's a detective in the waiting room that wants to speak with you if you are up to it." Dr. Neko said as she went to leave.
"That's fine." Suki said as she sat up a bit more. The detective came in a few minutes later. He had gray eyes and black hair.
"Suki, I'm Detective Moshi." he said as he sat down in a chair next to her bed.
"Nice to meet you." she smiled.
"So you have no idea what your family's name is?" he asked bluntly, his voice professional.
"Um no . . . I really can't remember anything." she admitted, her smile leaving.
"Can you remember anything relevant from before you fainted?" he asked.
" . . . no . . . " she said looking down. She was going to mention Kaosu but she didn't know what that person looked like or what their last name was so she saying anything about it would be pointless.
"While you were out, we ran a finger print search and your prints didn't match a name. We put pictures of you up around town and online but no one has called. So, I got a friend of mine from the FBI to run a world search and still nothing." he said while looking at her averted eyes.
" . . . something terribly wrong is going on . . ." she quietly said to her self.
"Do you at least know how old you are?" he questioned.
Her head shot up as she looked him in the eye and without thinking said, "I'm eighteen."
He wrote something down on a pad of paper and then said, "Just so this doesn't turn into a big commotion I'll just give you a new identity."
"Ok . . . " she said, thinking it odd to become someone else, though right now she was really no one. Something was seriously wrong, and she had this weird feeling. How could she have forgotten her entire life?
"Are you sure you don't remember anything at all?" he asked as he stood up.
She closed her eyes and sighed. She really didn't remember anything. Then an image came to her mind and she said, " . . . a book . . . I remember something about a book . . . and a bracelet."
"That book?" Moshi asked as he pointed to a book on the night stand. Suki looked at it with a confused look. She slid out of bed and picked it up. It was light for its size, three inches thick and about a foot in length. The black leather was smooth and the silver metal was cold. Sitting on top of the book was a ruby bracelet.
"I have no idea what this is but I remember seeing it before." she said as she sat the book down and picked up the bracelet and slipped it on saying, "It feels like I've always had this, all my life."
"I'll be down stairs to take you to my office for a new ID when you're done with the Doc." Moshi said as he left.
The doctor ran a few tests and then let her go. Where was she going to go?
When she got downstairs, she saw Moshi waiting by the checkout center. She shifted her bag from one shoulder to the other and signed out. Moshi walked over and then showed her to his car. She got in the back seat and tossed her bag in the seat next to her.
While he drove, he asked her questions about her likes and dislikes. What was her favorite color? Sky blue. Food? Mushrooms. Music genre? Techno. Flower? Moon flowers. Hobbies? Reading, drawing, shopping, designing outfits, and cooking.
She followed him into his office and sat down. He filled out some paperwork and made a phone call. All the while, she had slipped into an oblivious state.
They left that room and she got finger printed in another. Then she got her picture taken. Finally, she was presented with a new ID card.
"Suki Nisuginai . . . " she said to her self, letting it sink in. She put the card in her bag and followed Moshi back to his office.
"I don't know if you were listening or not but the phone call I made earlier was to my imouto. She's your age and doesn't mind sharing her room with you. She'll be here to pick you up in about an hour." he said as he looked through some papers.
"Ok, thanks. Should I just wait in front of the building?" she asked as she adjusted her bag.
"If you want and here," he said as he handed her some money, 1225yen to be exact, "there're vending machines in the break room. Get yourself something to eat."
"Thank you very much." she said with a bow, wanting to hug him. She was starving. After buying a sandwich, a bag of chips, and a can of green tea, she went outside and sat on the steps, throwing the trash away when she was done.
After about ten minutes, she was getting bored. She started to fiddle with her bracelet. When her fingers came to the little obsidian key, she stopped. Out of curiosity, she pulled the book out of her bag. She ran her finger over the small lock in the center. After comparing the shape of the key to the lock she decided that they would probably fit together. She was about to try it when someone called her name.
