"I'll only be gone for two and a half months." explained the extremely pregnant woman at the front of the class. "In the scheme of things, it's not that long." but the students of Mrs. Karson's Senior English class wouldn't have any of it. Cody, a good-looking, popular, loudmouth spoke up:
"Come on Mrs. K! You're the best teacher we've ever had, you can't leave us for that long." The rest of the class nodded in agreement. One of those nodding in agreement was Charlotte Olson, a girl with curly dark brown hair and hazel eyes. A frown was plastered across her heart shaped face. Two and a half months was far too long for her favorite teacher to be gone. Mrs. Karson had been Charlotte's favorite teacher for the past three months, ever since she began her Senior year at Richmond Highschool and she would definitely miss her.
"I'm going to have this baby in a week whether you like it or not, Cody." Was Mrs. Karson's response. "This is my first baby and I'm going to do it right and that means not going to work three days after I have my baby." Mrs. Karson was fairly young, twenty-eight, and was ecstatic at the at the prospect of having a baby but the idea of leaving her students was not so pleasant.
A smart girl named Lisa raised her hand and waited to be called on.
"Yes, Lisa?"
"Who's going to be our teacher?" she asked, sounding seriously concerned. Mrs. Karson had put a lot of thought into this subject. She knew that if she found an insufficient substitute her students would lose the interest that she had so carefully cultivated within their minds or worse they would lose trust in her.
"No need to worry Lisa, I have found a brilliant substitute."
"Is she hot?" Cody called out. The class began to laugh. Mrs. Karson smiled. She really was going to miss her classes, especially this one.
"I don't think Mr. Cambridge will be interested in you." The class laughed louder. "Back to business. Mr. Cambridge is actually a former student of mine. He took senior English from me the first year I taught back when I was twenty-four."
"Were you ever that young?" Cody teased.
"Now hush Cody. Your substitute was an excellent student. He's studying education in college now so I set up with the school and his college that teaching this class would be his student teaching." There was a low hum of chatter coming from the students, they were saying things like: "I guess that's ok." and "If he used to be a student of hers . . ." For the first time Charlotte spoke:
"So when are we gonna meet this guy?" Charlotte never failed to say what was on her mind. Mrs. Karson looked down at her watch.
"I told him to be here at eight fifteen so he should be here any minute now. He's never late."
"So how old is he?" asked a girl with unnaturally platinum blonde hair. "Is he cute?"
"Does it matter?" grumbled Charlotte with a role of her eyes. "As long as he can teach us something."
"That's none of your concern, Krista. Charlotte's right, as long as he can teach it doesn't matter how he looks." Mrs. Karson said.
"So in other words," began Krista. "He's a dog!" Mrs. Karson grinned and raised her eyebrows.
"Now I wouldn't say that. He's v-" A soft knock interrupted Mrs. Karson. "Well you'll see. Come in!" She called. In he walked. Krista, and every other girl in the room, was more than satisfied with what she saw.
David Cambridge was tall, dark and handsome. He must have been at least six feet tall with well tanned skin and pitch black hair. His eyes were a deep blue and were accented by his elegant royal blue tie. He wore a plain white button up shirt and black slacks.
"Good Morning!" he said brightly. "Am I late?" Mrs. Karson shook her head.
"On time. A minute early even." Mrs. Karson turned to the class. "Class, this is Mr. David Cambridge. He'll be teaching you for the next two and a half months. Since this is my last day before I go on maternity leave Mr. Cambridge will be observing you for today, getting to know you," Charlotte heard Krista whisper:
"He can observe me any day." Charlotte frowned. Charlotte had never liked Krista, she was so obnoxious.
"Tomorrow he'll begin teaching you. Now let's begin today's lesson."
"Mrs. Karson, before we begin, I'll need a place to sit." David said with a tap on Mrs. Karson's shoulder.
"Oh! Right." Mrs. Karson scanned the room. "There's a seat next to Charlotte. Charlotte, raise your hand." Charlotte felt all eyes on her as she raised her hand and watched David walk over to her and sit in the desk next to her. He smiled at her and whispered:
"Hi!" Charlotte nodded at him and then turned away. It was hard not to look at someone so attractive when they were sitting right next to you but she didn't want to be like Krista who had simply taken to staring at the attractive man sitting next to Charlotte even though, in Charlotte's opinion, it was extremely rude to do so when Mrs. Karson was teaching a lesson at the front of the class on the color symbolism in "The Great Gatsby" which they had just began studying the week before.
"Class, in your opinion, what does the green light at the end of the dock mean in this book?" Charlotte's hand shot up. "Yes Charlotte, what do you think?"
"The green light represents Gatsby's faith. It's impossible for him to not believe in it and reach for it. He relies on it, it's his assurance." Charlotte's answer was beginning to intrigue David. He was listening intently to Charlotte's answer. She went on: "Gatsby's ideal future, his green light, is tied with Daisy but she is something that he cannot have. She's married therefore she is forbidden."
"Very good. I couldn't have said it better myself. Any other opinions?" No answer. "
I think you said it all Charlotte. Shall we move on then?"
"That's all for today. I'll see all of you in two and a half months!" despite the fact that the next class began in five minutes half the class rushed over to Mrs. Karson to say their goodbyes. Charlotte decided to wait until everyone else had left to say her goodbyes to Mrs. Karson so she stuffed her books into her bag and perched herself on her desk and waited.
To Charlotte's disgust she saw Krista head over to the student teacher but not before she pulled the V-neck of her shirt down and checked her reflection in her mini mirror.
"How are ya?" she asked placing her elbows on the desk. David's reaction was quite entertaining. He averted his eyes to the ceiling, cleared his throat and began to turn red. "So your gonna be teaching me?" David nodded. "I'm good at learning."
"Th-that's good." David said stupidly.
"Maybe we can have some private lessons?"
"Oh my goodness." grumbled Charlotte.
"Ahem." Krista's advances were interrupted by Mrs. Karson. "David's shy, Krista. Why don't you try someone your own age?"
"Whatever you say Mrs. K. See ya in three and a half months!" Krista said as she made her way toward the door.
"Two and a half." Charlotte called after her.
"Whatever." She called back with a wave of her hand.
"Charlotte!" Mrs. Karson exclaimed. "Just the girl I need."
"Really?" I asked.
"Let me introduce you to Mr. Cambridge." Mrs. Karson gestured to David. "David, this is the student I was telling you about."
"Oh, I've heard many good things about you." David said with a smile. Charlotte began to blush.
"She's an excellent student and she is very trustworthy." Charlotte's blush grew deeper. "If there is anything important that you need to get done for the class ask Charlotte to help. She will do it in a heart beat." Charlotte nodded.
"I'll keep that in mind." David smiled at Charlotte. It was a sort of sweet and innocent smile. Charlotte's reaction was a small sigh. She quickly caught herself and covered her sigh with a loud cough.
"I'll be happy to help." She assured him. "I should be getting to class but I just wanted to say bye before you leave."
"I'll miss you Charlotte." Mrs. Karson gave Charlotte a hug, which was a little awkward considering she was so pregnant.
"I'll see you in two and a half months." Charlotte sighed. It seemed like such a long time for her to be gone. "Bye . . ." She slowly strolled out of the classroom to be met by an unpleasant sight.
"Cody! What are you doing just waiting out here in the hall? Nothing better to do?" A grin spread across Charlotte's face. "You're going to fail all of your classes anyway." Charlotte said with a certain amount of venom. Charlotte wasn't normally this mean, in fact she was quite a nice person, but Cody Evans brought out a bad side of her that she didn't like.
"Why did you stay in there so long?" Cody countered back. Charlotte, being only average height, had to crank her head upward to glare into his dark green eyes.
"I had to meet the new teacher." Cody chuckled and took a step closer to Charlotte. She tried to ignore the chill running down her spine as he whispered in her ear.
"You think he's hot?" Charlotte swatted at Cody in the process she messed up his carefully arranged shaggy blonde hair.
"He's a teacher. I won't think anything about him when I'm not in school." Charlotte winced as she heard the bell ring. She was now late for class. "Just leave me the hell alone." Charlotte tried to brush past Cody but he grabbed her wrist.
"You're such a good little girl." Cody grinned. "You have a coronary if you're late to class. I hate people like that. So high maintenance."
"Just let go of me!" With all of her strength Charlotte pulled her wrist out of Cody's grip. "If you hate me so then much leave me alone."
"I like watching you squirm." Cody admitted with a smirk.
"That's sick." Charlotte ran down the hall, creating as much distance between the two of them as possible. She stopped at the entrance to her next class, breathing hard. She smoothed her hair and caught her breath. She couldn't believe that there was someone alive that was as despicable as Cody Evans. Then again it was hard to believe that someone like David Cambridge was going to be her teacher. If he was as smart as Mrs. Karson said Charlotte had a feeling that he was going to become her favorite teacher but this was not the time to think about that. She was late for class. Charlotte took a deep breath and placed her hand on the doorknob, she hated being late.
