I Want to be That Guy

The shock quickly ebbed away and I was left with a feeling of relief, but I just had to ask something. "So, wait…why did you race Vince in the park that day?"

Rob opened his eyes and chuckled. "For me, that was just my male ego." He shot me a sly look. "But for Vince…I'm not so sure."

I blushed and shrugged. "I'm gonna go to first period, see you later."

He gave me a hug. "Meet you in the parking lot after school and we could go do something."

I nodded; glad to know that he just wants to hang out as friends.

I was sitting at lunch with Nadine and Vince when a tray plopped next to mine.

"Hey! My fifth period teacher had us temporarily switch lunches for our test, cool, huh?"

I smiled at him. "Don't just stand there Rob, sit down."

I heard a loud, obnoxious slurp of a soda across from me. When I turned to look at Vince he just gave me an innocent look. Psh, innocent my ass.

"So what do you want to do after school?" Rob's voice peeped up from my right.

I took a bite of my sandwich while I thought, coming to a simple conclusion. "I don't care."

Nadine asked, "Is this a date?"

I was about to laugh and say , "No!" but Rob beat me to the punch by saying, "Yes." Vince choked on his drink. Serves him right…

I did a double-take. Whaaat? I turned to look at Rob but he just gave me a silencing look.

Nadine squealed. "Oh my gosh, this is so cute!" She got a faraway look in her eyes, no doubt getting ready to dramatize the situation. "You guys broke up, and then Rob moved away. He comes back and then you both realized you never got over each other…" Cue heavy sigh.

"Well, thanks for the story, Nadine." Vince said, his face sour.

I cleared my throat. "Nadine, sorry to burst your bubble, but it's not a date." I shot a meaningful look at Rob.

Rob pouted; "Mia, I thought it was going to be a date."

What the heck is he on? Did he not just tell me he was gay? "Rob, can I speak to you for a moment?' My voice barely contained my anger.

"Not a problem!"

I yanked him up by his sleeve and led him out the cafeteria doors. I went over to the wall by the water fountains and practically shoved him against a bulletin board. "What is wrong with you?!" I whispered harshly.

He leaned closer to me. "I know you like him, Mia, and I was helping you out a bit."

I remained emotionless on the outside, but inwardly I was in turmoil. Do I like Vince? This-He is so frustrating! Why should Rob be helping me to try and make him jealous? I have no chance with him!

"This is crazy. This whole jealously thing will go to waste. Vince doesn't even like me."

He leaned more casually against the wall, crossing his arms over his chest. "'Lemme ask you something. Has he ever kissed you?"

Of all the questions he could ask… "Yes…but it was just to shut me up."

Rob exploded in laughter, clutching his sides. "He told you that?" He said between breaths.

I was getting annoyed. "Yes."

"Mia, I'm a guy, and I know when another guy likes someone. Vince likes you."

I rolled my eyes. "Whatever."

Rob changed the subject. "So, you, me, pizza?"

"Rob, I will get pizza with you only if you tell everyone else it's not a date."

"Fine." He huffed, crossing his arms moodily.

I snorted at his dramatics and just reentered the noisy lunchroom.

Vince watched us as we made our way back to the table. Nadine was positively glowing.

"Did Rob kiss you so that you would go out with him?" She asked in a not-so-quiet whisper.

I blushed. "No."

Vince got up to throw away his lunch, practically marching away from us.

"Someone's in a bad mood." Rob observed, giving me a wink.

I shot him a dirty look.

Vince didn't even sit back down but uttered, "I'm going to head to my locker, so I'll be on time to class."

I think everyone raised an eyebrow at him, but he chose to ignore us and walk out.

"He's acting weird." Way to state the obvious, Nadine.

"I wonder why." Rob said in a pseudo-speculating voice.

This is like the hundredth time (I am a sucker for exaggeration) he has been making these sly remarks about Vince. I've had it! "Rob, shut-up!" I waved a half-eaten sandwich in his face menacingly; even though I knew not a lot of damage would be done if I chucked it at him.

He just smiled and thankfully kept his mouth closed.

For some reason, I always had my serious conversations with Vince in parking lots.

I was walking to my car, alone, (Nadine was with Dustin) and I saw Vince observing me from his perch on the hood of his mustang.

I walked up to him. "Not worried about scratching your baby?"

He smirked. "Nah. Gonna polish it when I get home."

"Oh." I replied, suddenly at loss as to what to say.

"So… You and Rob huh?"

To lie or not to lie, that's the question.

I shrugged. "I guess."

"You don't sound very sure about that." He drawled.

I looked up at him, annoyed that he was taller then usual because he was sitting on the hood of his black car.

"Why do you care so much?" I shot back irritatingly.

He gazed down at me, green eyes smoldering beneath thick lashes. "Maybe, because I want to be that guy."

Finally! My writer's block has vanished! Hope you liked it, I want to know what you think. Muchas Gracias a mi Beta!
