Sara arrived at work 15 minutes late to an angry supervisor waiting for her.
"Sara," her boss began, "I need that claim study wrapped up today. If you can't pull that together, I will have someone else finish it."
"No sir," she replied, "I will focus on it today. Top of the agenda list, I promise. I'm sorry I'm late."
No response from the boss as she turned and walked away.
"What happened to you?" Judy asked.
"Oh, shit, what didn't happen?" Sara began. "Iron burnt the silk on the blouse that I was going to wear, car wouldn't start, bus was late…"
"I get it," Judy said, "and SHE was waiting for you when you got here."
"Exactly," she replied, "and now I have a thousand loose ends to tie up on that project by 4 if I want that commission…and maybe my job…"
"I will help you with the report," Judy said. "I've got a light day, we just need to be discreet."
She smiled at Sara.
"I love you," Sara replied.
She sat down at her desk and opened her e-mail. 14 new messages. 14 more things to do today.
Clearly being put off until later.
"So how is the big bank man, Rick, doing?" Judy asked. "Did he make it back from his trip okay?"
"Yeah, I guess," Sara said, "he is so weird. He can't get enough of me for five days and then he disappears for a week or so. I just can't take this relationship seriously."
"Clearly, he isn't," Judy said. "Just stay dating…don't you DARE give him your heart, or anything else, for that matter."
"We've only been seeing each other off and on for a month, and what kind of girl do you think I am?"
"I'm just saying," Judy replied, "it only leads to heartbreak…"
"You have three new messages," chimed from her voicemail through the speakerphone.
"Hi, I am calling about a claim that was put in against me…" she took down the information and saved the message.
"Hey, baby, it's me, Rick," came a deep voice from the second message, "I just wanted you to know that I am back from my business trip and I would like you to come to dinner with me tonight. Just call me back…I miss you."
"Ooooh," Judy cooed. Sara just shot her a look of disdain. She wrote "call Rick" on a sticky note and erased the phone message.
Message number three.
"Hi, Sara, it's me. Dave. We spoke earlier…"
Those deep blue eyes of Sara's widened and shot a look over to Judy, who was looking just as surprised. Judy picked up her chair and scooted over to Sara's side to get a better listen.
They listened to it three times, and Sara sat there, unemotional, just looking at the phone.
Clearly, she had no idea how to handle this.
Finally, Judy broke the tension.
"Sara, he's a backup football player," she said, "a FOOTBALL player…sooo not your type, and a BACKUP, at that! He's not even the star!"
"There's something in his voice, though," Sara blinked from her trance and said.
"Sara, you're 24 he's 22, but you both are on different PLANETS when it comes to maturity level."
Sara frowned. "How do you know?"
"You are NOT taking this guy seriously."
"It's like he said…he just wants to be friends," she replied, "besides, something that you never knew about me…I like football."
"So are you going to call him back?"
"Yeah…"she replied, "I think I am…"
