Chapter Two
You see, I did stay conscious. (Props to me!) But that didn't mean that I was coherent.
I kinda laid on the floor for a while, until strong arms wrapped around me. One around my middle, one around my upper thighs.
"Mashed potatoes and gravy...You know, I loveeeee mash potatoes." Don't give me that look, I had that for lunch today.
In response to my babbling, all I heard was a deep laugh.
"You know what?" I didn't wait for the guy to answer, "You have a purrrrty laugh." I giggled.
I was suddenly on a cold, stiff surface. The warmth of the arms that were previously around me disappeared. "I'm cold." I shivered.
All I heard was a quiet, older male voice. "Her name?"
"I don't know..." The younger voice murmured.
"Do you at least know who did this to her face?"
"...I did." Okay then, this is the guy who punched me in the face. He is now my automatic enemy. Who punches people? Who has such bad reflexes that they can't stop a punch when it's clearly not going to the directed target? Ugh...
There was a pause, then a very loud, "What?!"
"It was an accident!" Said my enemy. "I was fighting some other guy and he ducked and she was behind him."
"Fine, fine. Just leave, the principal is waiting outside the door for you." I just hear footsteps and then a door closing before a cold washcloth is pressed on my forehead.
"You with me girl?" This man has such a nice voice.
"Yeah." I say hoarsely. "And it's Leah."
"Leah, pretty name, I'm Greg, school nurse. Now, keep this on your forehead and open your eyes for me."
I open my eyes and he shines a very bright light at them before saying, "No concussion."
It takes a minute for my eyes to focus before I see an elderly man with kind eyes and laugh lines around his face. "Thanks." I say.
"No problem." He smiles. "I'm just going to call your parents, I think it would be best for you to just go home for today."
"My aunt and my mother." I say automatically. My father left with another woman when I was two.
"Okay, sweetie, I just need your phone number."
I rattle of my number and try to stand up. And succeed, albeit a little shakily.
" Can I at least get all my assignment for today?"
"Sure, just come back after your done." He hands me a gold pass and I leave out the door.
Okay I only need to go to two classes: Math and History.
I go to Math first and quietly slip in the classroom. I can hear gasps and wonder just how bad my face is.
Million dollar question: Does it resemble a golf-ball or a tennis ball?
"What happened to ya face?" A loud, obnoxious voice says.
I turn to look where the voice came from and see Chad...I almost sigh out loud but the teacher interrupts me by plopping the books in my arms.
"Hope you feel better." I just nod and skedaddle outta there.
Next is History, and I have to plan out how I'm going to do this. My teacher, , is very strict, and very mean. I decide to just wing it, and see what happens.
Olivia is in that class and she mouths, "Are you okay?" once i step in the classroom. I give her a smile, letting her know I'm fine.
"Miss Klide!" A loud voice booms, "What is your business in here?"
"I need my assignments for today, I'm going home."
"And why is-" He looks at my head, "Oh, well, just give me a minute to get everything in order."
And just as promised, a minute later he hands me the worksheet that is assigned for homework tonight. I thank him and depart the classroom.
I walk along, making my way back to the Nurse's office when I hear:
"Hey you!"
I turn and see my new-found enemy. He looks at my face.
"Look...I'm really sorry." His gray eyes seemed sincere.
"It's okay." No, it is not! What am I saying?!
"Well, I don't think it's okay." He peers down at me, his hands stuffed into the pockets of his dark-washed jeans.
"Fine, it's not okay." I glare up at him. "Better now?"
He grins. "Of course."
He suddenly thrusts a hand in my direction. "Name's James Harlor."
"It's Leah Klide." His eyes widen a fraction, and he grips my hand is his. A nice, strong grip, too.
"Listen, Leah, I gotta get back to class, see ya later." He rips his hand from mine and walks away.
That was...odd. I turn and go in the other direction.
Hope you liked it...
