The Way We Do Things
by throwingstars

We're from different worlds and people wouldn't understand it, but it's just the way we do things.

You see me in the hall at school, and you smile.
I nod, and keep on walking.

You sit near the front in all our classes.
I sit four rows back.

You go to the deli down the street for lunch.
I drive around with friends.

You go to the parties and dance with the boys.
I go to the concerts and flirt with the girls.

You date those boys.
I date those girls.

You break up with those boys.
I forget those girls.

You're upset.
I wait at my house.

You walk in without knocking.
I'm used to it.

You've known me for years.
I like to rub it in.

You pick a movie.
I make you dinner.

You pick the Princess Bride, like always.
I tease you about it, like always.

You laugh when I call you Buttercup.
I glare when you call me Westley.

You sit with your head on my shoulder.
I play with your hair.

You hug me when the movie's over.
I kiss you before you leave.

You smile at me in the hall the next day, like usual.
I nod, and keep walking, like usual.

You have your world.
I have mine.

People wouldn't understand it, but that's the way we do things.
