Summary: SLASH
They say you can't help who you fall in love with. They say that love the closest thing we have to magic...
It's not always great being the twin that's quiet and shy - lost in the background of your slightly older and much louder, fun twin.
It's not always great being the impulsive, out of control twin who sleeps around and is never taken seriously – lost in the spotlight of your smarter and more fragile twin.
It's even worse when you fall in love with each other. Meet the Hancroft twins. Will you still think the same thing once you hear their story?
Prologue
Pale, seven-year-old hands delicately wove together the green stalks, creating a pretty and fragile daisy chain. Slowly as the day grew darker and the sun began to disappear, the chain grew longer within the deft hands of creativity as the pile of already withering daisies grew smaller. Concentration and love flowed from those tiny, slender fingers into the pure white petals of a daisy, pulsing through the thin stalks as they threaded their way through each petite flower stem. A small, dusty pink tongue had gently poked itself out from the corners of a mouth; slipping past soft pillows of pale red lips as startlingly silver eyes studied the quick handiwork.
Pretty soon however, the evening sunset had disappeared over the horizon, the last coloured rays crying and calling out to the lonely figure. They begged the figure to watch but it was already much too preoccupied with the slender chain wound around small hands. As the rays died out in feeble silence with the figure still paying no attention, it reluctantly gave up its place to make way for shining stars and a dark black sky dominated.
Open and through, open and through, open and through…
The mantra continued in the young boy's mind, like a broken record except more soothing and full of calmness.
"Boo." Although the word had been whispered ever so softly into his ear, it still had the desired effect.
A startled shriek tore from those same pale red lips that innocent tongue had been poking through earlier, the daisy chain slipping through delicate fingers as a scuffle sounded loudly in the night due to the result of lost footing. After a momentary pause, a small, stifled snicker soon followed.
"Garen!" an indignant, slightly effeminate squeak hissed at the slightly taller and not as skinny young seven-year-old standing superiorly before him, a hand clapped over his mouth to prevent the laughter from slipping out and failing in the process. He still continued to laugh however despite protests from the boy who had been peacefully threading daisies not too long ago. "I could've fallen you know! It's a really long way from up here to the garden!"
"Calm down already, jeez. It's not like I would've let you fall, I'll always catch you, you stupid head." Garen told him affectionately, snorting as he rubbed his stormy gray eyes, the color opposite to that of the more effeminate boy.
"Whatever."
There was a stretched silence as the younger one of them continued to thread his daisies, calmly ignoring his twin and continuing on with the mantra in his head. Garen instead, was watching his brother as he deftly picked apart the stalks to create a small hole before threading a new daisy through it. It was quite chilly out tonight and Garen shivered, the wind ruffling his pale blonde hair, identical to that of his twin's.
The two boys weren't all too similar with differences that could be easily picked out to tell them apart from one another such as the fact that Garen was chubbier, had a more boyish face and stormy gray eyes where his brother was quite skinny, had a fairly androgynous face and clear silver gray eyes. The few similarities the two had were their heights, identical pale blonde hair (both in shape and style) and same porcelain pale skin. One could say however that Garen's skin is a slight shade darker and more tanned fair instead of porcelain due to the fact that Garen just loved to go outdoors and play rough, very much unlike his more introspective brother.
"So…what're you doing?" Garen asked in an a tone that was meant to annoy his little brother but seemed to have had no effect whatsoever. The chubbier boy's smile revealed a small gap between his front teeth as he abruptly sat down next to his twin and stretched out his pyjama-clad legs, leaning on his palms with his face tilted up to the sky.
"I'm making a daisy chain." The pale blonde replied distractedly as he delicately fingered the daisy chain, eyebrows furrowed in concentration as he squinted in the darkness at the flower, tiny tongue poking out between his lips once again. "Aw, Garen, you ruined it!" he suddenly cried mournfully as he realized there was a slight tear in the chain, not enough to break it apart but enough to make it even more fragile than it was before. If it got caught on something or the wind tugged on it just a little harder, it would probably snap and then the whole chain would fall to pieces.
Garen rolled his eyes. "Who cares?" he said in a bored tone, peeking out of the corner of his eye to watch his little brother.
"I do!" came the effeminate squeak as he watched him lay down the daisy chain lovingly next to him on the roof before folding his arms and pouting, face turned towards Garen.
"You're such a girl, Cadyn."
"Am not!"
"You are too!"
Garen turned and pounced on him, fingers poking in his sides as he started to tickle him mercilessly, little squeals erupting from Cadyn the effeminate boy. Soon, the tickling developed into wrestling and the two boys were now playfully fighting on the roof, laughing freely. However Garen, being the stronger one, won the fight and straddled Cadyn victoriously smirking as he whooped.
"Fine, fine, whatever, I give up!" seven-year-old Cadyn gasped before breaking out in more giggles. After their state of hyperactive laughter died down, they regarded one another silently, smiling at each other until the smile slowly slipped off of Cadyn's angelic face.
"What is it?" Garen asked worriedly as he watched the smile disappear, his own smirk slipping off his lips.
"What's a...kiss?" Cadyn asked innocently, a little flush decorating his cheeks as he looked up at his twin.
Garen grinned cheekily before puffing up his scrawny seven-year-old chest, eyes regarding Cadyn with superiority. "I thought you were the smarter one, Cadyn!"
Cadyn just rolled his eyes. "Whatever. I just wanted to know, alright?" he said before pushing Garen off of him (much to the surprise of his twin), huffing a little. It was just a question, who cares whether he knew what it was or not?! He stood up, attempting to storm off but was roughly pulled back down to the tiled roof by Garen whose hand had shot out from his side and was now wrapped around Cadyn's skinny wrist in a firm grip.
"Aw, Cadyn, don't be mad! I was just teasing with you. A kiss is when someone's mouth touches your mouth! Like what mommy and daddy do every morning! It means that someone likes you! Why do you want to know anyway?" Garen explained before asking inquisitively, head cocking to the side as his stormy orbs regarded his baby twin.
"Well...Katie Milano tried to kiss me today...when I asked what she was doing, she said she was kissing me. Then she called me stupid." Cadyn sighed as he slumped back down beside his brother.
"What did you do after?" Garen's voice was soft now, holding an underlying threat. How dare that...disgusting, cootie-filled Barbie try to touch his brother! I mean, he'd get gross girl cooties...right?
"I ran away. I don't like her. She's mean...and weird." Cadyn confessed his silver eyes staring up at the glittering stars that twinkled lightly back at him in the deep midnight blue sky. He lay down on the roof with the decision to stay and go with the risk that Garen wouldn't tease him again, the slate shingles feeling cold beneath his head. Garen stared at him for a while before lying down beside him in the same position, arms brushing against one another as they stared in silence up at the stars.
"Have you done it?" the younger pale blonde asked quietly, silver eyes searching the sky for a certain something as he wondered why he seemed to care about whether Garen had done it or not. He tried not to, focusing on the stars and awaiting his brother's reply.
"No."
A long silence stretched out between them as they continued to watch the tiny sparkles with seven-year-old wonder in their eyes.
"I like you." was the soft, almost inaudible reply to Garen's answer. A reply that Cadyn wasn't sure if he wanted it to be heard or not but thanks to the sudden burst of wind the confession was swept away, echoing in Garen's ears.
"I like you too."
"So...do you want to do it? Because I like you and you like me...and I don't like girls...they're all...gross. They have cooties." Cadyn started to babble, feeling nervous for some reason.
"Yeah, cooties are gross." Garen agreed before realizing Cadyn's request. He suddenly felt funny in his tummy. He tried looking up at his baby twin brother, smiling a little at Cadyn's conflicting expressions and emotions that flitted across his face. The sight of him sent tingles shooting though his body. Good tingles, not those nasty pins and needles ones. "Um, okay..."
The two had tentatively got up during their strange confession and were now on their knees and staring into each other's eyes. Garen licked his suddenly dry lips, coating them in a gloppy sheen of saliva as he rubbed his sweaty hands on his pyjama pants. What's wrong with me? The thought briefly passed over his mind.
"Ewww, don't do that, that's gross!" Cadyn suddenly squealed, wrinkling his nose cutely.
It took Garen a moment to realize he was talking about his lips and he hurriedly wiped his mouth on the sleeve of his pyjamas. He lifted his head up to his brother's silver eyes, stormy gray contrasting with the sharp silver.
"Here we go." Garen murmured softly before leaning forward, Cadyn copying him. The boys squeezed their eyes shut, lips puckering up in the traditional kiss fashion. At the same time, their soft, pale pink lips touched gently and they allowed it to linger like that for a couple of seconds before slowly opening their eyes. Garen pressed forward just a little bit to apply more pressure, his eyes staring into the depths of his twin's but before anything else could happen, Cadyn abruptly drew away.
"G-good n-night..." almost immediately came Cadyn's stutter that trailed off towards the end as he found himself unable to say Garen's name. Feeling hot all over and looking quite red, he turned away fast and slipped through the window into their room before Garen could even process what was happening.
"Little brother...Cadyn..." Garen whispered the sound carrying in the night air like an echo that had been yelled. He stood up to follow him but his peripheral vision in the night time suddenly caused his eyes to snag in the innocent pure white item that lay innocently on the roof, delicately fluttering in the cooling breeze.
