I'm not quite sure why I was even out. Now that I think of it, I can't remember when I left or from which direction I came. My head hurt horribly, and I was chilled to the bone, which partially explains why I'd arrived at a coffee house. But, for the most part, I was still utterly confused. I shook the water from my jacket, and sat down at the closest table hoping to think for a moment. Was I having a hangover? No, I didn't drink. The smell of alcohol made me ill, and the few sips I'd had of it were taken with instant regret.

I looked at my reflection on the black table. My hair had surprisingly managed to stay dry. I had brought my jacket up to cover my head, and now my dark brown hair hung proudly down my back. My makeup hadn't run- if I had even put it on earlier. For the most part my face showed how I felt- tired, cold, confused. But my bright blue eyes shone with the light of a burning intelligence; a longing for knowledge, a need to know more.

A voice interrupted my thoughts.

"May I help you?" I looked up and saw a boy with dark brown hair that hung near his eyes, the rest of his hair was slightly long, around the length of his chin. His eyes were an intense blue, and I couldn't help staring at him.

"Um, may I help you?" he stammered slightly startled.

I blushed "Well, may I have a… coffee?"

He nodded, wrote something down, and return to the kitchen. For the first time since entering, I looked at the café. It was cute this room was pretty big compared to the buildings I'd passed. There was a counter and an opening in the wall so that you could see into the kitchen. I saw the boy starting a few machines and shaking his head for not starting them earlier. A few paintings hung on the wall, but for the most part, I was alone.

I dug into my pocket and brought out my wallet to see if I'd have enough money. My eyes shot open as I saw how much was in there. I brought out a wad of money and counted it. There was $100 dollars there. It wasn't even half of it. I put my wallet back and as I looked back up at the kitchen, I caught the boy staring at me curiously. He looked away and quickly turned around. Again I was left alone with my thoughts.

How did I get here? I rubbed my temples in deep concentration and my brow furrowed in frustration. Finally I felt a strong urge to know at least the answer to one of my questions, so I searched the kitchen for the boy. I was startled when I saw he wasn't there. To my relief, I saw him quickly walking out of the kitchen and waving his hand over the white mug he varied as if o cool it down. He smiled when he reached the table, and carefully set the cup down.

"I'm sorry but… where are we?"

He looked slightly shocked, but seeing the confusion on my face, he held up a finger to tell me to wait and ran back to the kitchen fumbling around. When he returned he proudly held a map. As he came closer he laid it out on the table.

"Here's where we are." he said pointing to a spot on it. "Now where did you come from?'

I scanned the whole map, hoping a name would pop out at me. Sadly I shook my head to show I didn't know. I felt like a stranger in a different country. Completely alienated and alone.

"So what's your name?"

I had to have a name, everyone did. What was mine? A name, a name, I needed a name. How could I remember how to breathe, walk, I could even talk, but I couldn't remember my name? Suddenly it hit me, and the word rang through my whole body. It was something I knew, remembered; something all my own, and it suited me.

"My name's Danielle. What's yours?" I held out my hand in greeting

He smiled, "Conner." and shook my hand back.

I took the cup of coffee and took a sip, "It's awful!" I said pushing the cup away from my mouth.

"So, I'm guessing you've never had coffee before?"

I nodded "Well it just seemed that so many adults drank it that it would taste better or something."

He reached for the cup and a couple of sugar and cream packets, and sat back down in his seat. I watched as the coffee went from a bitter black to swirling clouds of white and gray.

"Try it now."

I drank some more, but squeezed my eyes shut at the still foreign taste.

"It's much better." I assured him, seeing the look on his face.

"Doesn't get much better than that."

"Really? Well, it wakes you up, that's for sure."
