I ran. Ran through the streets I knew so well, ran from the mad mob that pursued me crying out in terror and anger. Torches blazed, blades, spears, and pitchforks flashed in the moonlight. Their terrified and enraged voices cried out like a forest symphony, random and loud, but now and then one voice raised above the others and the others around it joined in the cry until it was one single noise, echoing through the city like some horrifying heartbeat backed by the screaming of the rest of the mob. It resounded through the city now. Kill the Werewolf.
I streaked through the disgusting alleyways of the city, searching desperately for a place of safety. I rounded a corner and saw my answer, the church. I ran through the door. The priest walked to the door alerted by the creaking of the hinges. "Peace my child" he said kindly making the sign of the cross, then he saw what was at his door. He yelped in fear, I tried to kneel but this form was proportioned differently and it was difficult, to him it probably looked like I was going to pounce. He shrieked in terror and swung his staff at me the silver ball on top hit me in the side and it burned like red hot coals. I yelped and snarled, then I heard the sounds of the mob outside, so did the priest. "Help! Help please help"! If I had lips I would have sworn, instead I leaped over the priest and ran towards the other exit.
I reached the other door just as the mob burst through. Deciding this was a bad route to take I veered right and headed up a flight of stairs, sprinting away from those who pursued me. I heard voices echoing behind me as I reached the bell tower. I paused for a moment to consider my next move, then I grabbed a beam above my head, and swung up. I crouched in the rafters, silent and still. The door burst open below me and men flooded the bell tower. They looked and seeing nothing obvious began to search in small groups.
About seven feet above their heads I watched and waited resisting my instincts that were screaming for me to leap for the door. Instead I looked up and saw the many beams that continued above my head, holding the bells high off the ground. If I were in my human form I would have grinned. I leaped up to grab a beam above my head and swung myself up, leaping from beam to beam silent as the moon that was my light. I reached a window and silently slipped outside.
I stood silently among the gargoyles on the roof. Silently and stealthily I waited for a chance to run for it. The chance never came. Humans, it seems, are smarter than I had anticipated. They expected me to go for the roof and had someone waiting for me. Unfortunately for me I didn't come to this conclusion until a crossbow bolt buried itself in my leg. Unfortunately for him, he didn't cripple me enough to stop me from biting right through his neck. But it was too late, the alarm had been sounded. Almost immediately the roof began to swarm with humans, preparing to do battle with the beast; but I was gone.
They began to search the roof, looking over the edge to see if I had jumped. I hadn't. I was clinging to the side of the building my claws digging into the stone, hooked over one of the balconies edges. I looked up and, seeing no one peering over the edge, leaped to a lower balcony. This process continued until I was a mere 20 feet from the ground below. Then I leaped. I needed to get as far away from the building in that one leap without being seen by anybody. I failed. Halfway through the leap someone saw me and soon crossbow bolts were everywhere, worse yet, many were tipped with silver. I could smell the deadly metal as it shot past me, but it didn't really sink in until a silver tipped bolt buried itself in my back. There goes my smooth landing. I smashed into the hard cobblestones headfirst, tumbling over and over. When I finally stopped the bolt started to burn. It felt like the metal was heating up. I reached back and yanked the bolt out of my flesh, tossing it into the darkness with a snarl. I lowered myself to the ground to minimize the target and tried to figure out where the bolt had come from. I saw a tiny glint in the bell tower and heard people shouting as word of my escape spread. Crap.
