Jordan Walsh walked out of her school with a broad smile. She had just gotten back her research paper that she had slaved over for three months and had been pleasantly surprised with the A minus she had received.
She pulled her backpack onto her shoulder more securely as she walked across the campus and headed for the parking lot for her car.
As she walked, she heard someone call out her name franticly before she slowed down and let the person catch up to her. His arm slid across her shoulder before he pulled her close and kissed her cheek.
"Good afternoon gorgeous." Kyle Spencer greeted.
Jordan slid out of his grasp. "Hi."
"What's the matter?"
She let out a deep breath. "Well besides the fact that you and I haven't talked in the past two weeks and you just come over wrapping your arm around me and kissing me is just odd. Other than that everything is fine."
He looked at her with his hazel eyes. "I thought we were going to continue being friends?"
"It helps when one friend returns the other's phone calls."
"I've been busy. Besides, it's not like we're dating, or as if we ever did."
Jordan adjusted the strap of her bag again. "And that's my problem. The fact that we were friends for so long and then you used me and got pissed at me after I told you-"
"Let's not talk about that now."
She didn't bother to look at him as she stopped at an intersection. As they waited for the light to change, he grabbed her hand in his; yet again, she pulled away and concentrated on the other side of the street.
"Look, I know what I did was horrible, but we talked everything over and I thought we were fine. You said you were fine."
"Well I've changed my mind… no let me correct myself." The two began to cross the street before they continued towards the parking lot. "I actually had the time to think things over on my own without you shoving your stupid opinions at me-"
"Look. We weren't dating-"
"Then you need to stop acting as though we were, or as if we are still best friends. You have completely demolished every piece of trust I had in you. It'll take time for me to love you again."
The two walked in silence absorbed in their own thoughts. Jordan wished she had parked closer so that this awkward encounter would be over soon. When they got to her car, she unlocked the door before putting her bag inside.
Kyle grabbed her arm before he looked into her eyes. "I told you before that I love you and that if I were to start dating again you would definitely be the first girl I called. I've known for the past two years that I want to marry you it's just that right now I'm not ready to settle down."
"And I want to thank you for wasting a year of my life loving you and thinking that there was something wrong with me that made you not want to make a commitment. Oh and I want to thank you for taking a five year friendship and flushing it down the toilet and thank you for killing my self esteem and… Just go away."
She then got into her car and left him in the parking lot.
After Jordan pulled into her driveway, she climbed out of the car, and grabbed her book bag before she grabbed the mail and went inside. Her two cats and dog eagerly ran to the front door to greet her and she pet them each vigorously, before she made her way to the kitchen.
There she saw her mother making dinner.
"Hi mom."
"Hey sweetie. Are you going to be around for dinner tonight?"
Jordan shook her head even though her mother wasn't looking. "No, me and Matilda are going to be heading out."
"I still don't see why you kids think that just because someone turns twenty one you have to go out and drink."
"I'm the last one in our group to turn twenty one so everyone is making a big deal about it. I could care less. I'm not that much of a drinker."
Jordan set her bag down on the floor before she sat at the kitchen table.
Her mother walked over to her and kissed the top of her head. "Well I don't know if this is good news or not but Kyle just called."
"That's not good news."
"Well me and your dad got your present for you."
Jordan smiled. "Much better. What'd you get me?"
Her mother shook her head before she returned to her cooking. "I'm not telling you. It's not your birthday yet."
"Fine I'll go ask dad."
Jordan picked up her book bag and made her way up the stairs and her cats followed at her heels. At the second story landing, she peeked into her parents' room and saw her dad sprawled out across the bed as he watched television.
"Hi dad."
"My name isn't dad." he said in a cool reserved voice, which was not his own, as he wore her aviator sunglasses. "Call me H."
"Okay, dad you are not Horatio Caine." Jordan whined.
She watched her father slide the sunglasses off before he said in that voice. "Aren't I Calliegh? Aren't I?"
"No you're not and I'm not Calliegh Duquaine. Just because you've watched a marathon of CSI Miami and stole my avatars, that makes you Horatio."
"I'm the boss here Calliegh and I don't appreciate that attitude."
Instead of wasting any more time arguing with her father, Jordan walked into her bedroom and closed the cats out.
She threw her bag to the floor and plopped down onto her bed before she grabbed her cell phone and called her best friend Matilda.
"Hello." she answered after two rings.
"Hey what's up?" Jordan asked.
"Not much here, just another long boring day at work, and you?"
Jordan sighed. "Exciting day of school and an unnecessary conversation with Kyle that I don't want to talk about. Other than that, I'm avoiding my cats. What are you up to?"
"I'm packing for this weekend."
"You know you really didn't have to rent us a hotel room for this entire weekend?"
"And you know that of course I had to. I've only been waiting for you to turn twenty one for over two years now."
"But still-"
"But still nothing. Shut up and pack." Matilda hung up on her friend.
