My mother always told me to be thankful with what I have and to always count my blessings. Well, I've never been one to just settle. So when I get bored of something or it's just not good enough, I drop it. If someone gets on my nerves too much, too often, I don't talk to them anymore and cut off from them completely. If I have a boyfriend who just isn't humorous or doesn't pay enough attention to me, I break up with him. I just break off from anything that doesn't satisfy me, cold turkey. That's all there is to it.
Because that's just me, Elizabeth Locks.
I was watching him. Jacob Downer, the boy who'd I known since 7th grade. He had to be one the hottest guy's I had ever seen. He's was 6'2 with shaggy, dirty blonde hair and bright blue eyes. I think the only thing wrong with his looks was the strawberry birthmark on his left cheek. It's had been there since I'd known him, he didn't seem bothered by it. But I think the shallow girls at Lake View Centennial High were turned off by it. I loved it, I thought it was cute. My eyes followed him as he walked towards the door.
"Earth to Elizabeth! Elizabeth? ELIZABETH!"
"Yes, Sophie?" I said, snapping my head towards her.
"I've been calling your name for the past gajabillion years." She said.
"Oh."
"Yeah. So, anyways, I was asking who you're going with to the Back to School Dance."
"No one yet." I murmured, picking up my pencil to twirl it around in my fingers like a drumstick.
"Ah. I see. Want me to set you up with someone? I know this cute guy, he's a-"
"No, I think I can manage on my own," I said, interrupting her.
"Well, I'm just trying to hel-"
"I know Sophie, I know. But I can find a date by myself. I'm not completely helpless." I said, not bothering to keep the irritation out of my voice. She was getting on my nerves a lot lately. That wasn't a good sign.
I watched as her face flushed, she was embarrassed.
I turned my head away from her and rolled my eyes, she was so ditzy sometimes. I closed my eyes for a bit, hoping that that would calm me down. I don't know why but I had a super short temper, the smallest thing could trip it.
I heard a chair scraping across the floor, I opened my eyes. There sat Jacob in all his skater glory.
He was sitting in the chair backwards leaning on his elbows which sat on the back of the chair. He was smiling, his hair falling into his eyes.
"Hey." I said, leaning back in my chair.
He nodded his head in response.
"Whussup?" I said as I tossed my pencil in the air.
"Just chillin'. Waiting for this class to end." He said as he swiped the pencil out of the air before I could catch it.
"Yeah," I breathed out.
I watched as he took the pencil, pulled the front of his pants open, and dropped the pencil in. I raised an eyebrow.
"I hope that didn't go in your boxers."
"It did," He said, grinning.
I sighed. There was no way I wanted it anymore.
"So, uh, why did you do that?"
"I needed a pencil."
"Ah, makes sense now," I said.
I glanced up at the clock, two more minutes until the bell.
"Can I touch your hair?" I asked.
"Only if I can touch yours."
I tilted my head forward as I reached out a hand to ruffle his hair; he did the same to me. His hair was soft.
"Your hair is soft." I said.
"I know. Yours smells really good." I laughed.
Just then the bell that signaled us to head to our next class screeched.
"Well, I'll see you later" I said, as slung my bag over my shoulder.
He nodded and took off out of the class.
"I am so sick of you, Sophie." I said.
Her face fell, those over lip glossed lips fell open forming an 'O'.
"Wha-What?"
"I said I'm sick of you." I announced every word as if she were a little kid.
"What did I do?" She cried.
"Everything," I shook my head disapprovingly as I spoke.
"But...But I-"
"Nuh uh. I'm done with you." I said.
I knew I was being harsh. Maybe too harsh, she was starting to tear up. I took a deep breath and turned away from her. I could hear her sobbing as I walked out into the rain. I hunched my shoulders and started to walk down the street towards my house. I was a block or so away from the school, a black and blue street race car pulled up to the curb.
"Hey. Get in the car! I've got candy." The voice said, letting the last word drawl.
