"I'm leaving. I can't stand this anymore."
Darria had known since the second day after meeting Kornora that the other girl was slightly messed up in the head. Being raised for six years by a severely schizophrenic aunt who kidnapped you when you were three would to that to anyone. She'd gathered bits and pieces of what had happened from the older girl: a joke about not possibly being afraid of snakes, a blank look, a flinch when there shouldn't be one, a question to something that should be obvious.
But she hadn't expected Kornora to be completely incapable of prolonged positive human interaction.
Things had been awkward upon meeting Kornora's family. It didn't help that both of Kornora's parents were fairly constantly busy. Sonora had been both excited and decidedly pessimistic about her elder sister's presence, unsure how that would effect her own position. And Kornora felt constantly bombarded by interested, well-meaning greetings from "just about everyone in the freaking country."
And to a point Darria understood. She'd gotten her fair share of weird looks, curious glances, and questions. She was even more frustrated at the lack of significant communication-she'd had only had a few weeks of careful tutoring from Sisreera and still had trouble understanding the language. She was used to being able to speak her ideas clearly. Stumbling around learning the intricacies of a new culture-several new cultures-and a new language at the same time was HARD. But she'd been too engrossed in the new sights and sounds of this city. Just think about it: an entirely different world! She was far too excited to let little things worry her.
"There's no place for me here," Kornora told Darria fiercely, who was merely glad she was ranting in English. Kornora had a better grasp of what the people said than her friend, for she had spoken it herself to Koshness. "Oh, there might have been once but they've long since rebuilt their lives without me! I actually can sympathize all those girls in those fairy tales. It can't have been easy for Sleeping Beauty to just come waltzing back to the castle. You can't just suddenly accept people as parents that you've just met! Darria, I need time to adjust to this place. They're trying to give me room, but it just doesn't work like that. I'm just not going to be able to be these people's ruler one day-no matter what they think! I've heard the rumors so I'm going to stop them. I'm leaving now before it gets any worse. If you want to come that'd be great, but if you don't fine."
Kornora swung a small bag on her shoulder and slammed the door behind herself.
"You could have just asked nicely," Darria sighed to the empty room. But she couldn't help but smile as she bent to find something to carry what little money and necessary supplies she'd gathered since her arrival. Yeah Kornora sucked at interacting with people but she did care a lot about them. She could only be leaving to relieve poor Sonora's fears of being completely usurped.
With a light step Darria left her room and ran after Kornora.
Behind her a single paper fluttered, a quickly scrawled message briefly revealed before it hit the floor.
