Note: The summary is a bit...eh. I'm not good at summaries, sorry about that. This is my first story, so I do hope you enjoy. As I said in the summary, it's a collab/roleplay with a friend. My parts of the story are basically Nicolette's parts. Luke's parts are my collaborator's. We're still in the middle of the roleplay, but I do have plenty to add. Thanks. :
Luke Clarke was waiting
He was sitting on his couch, at home, and waiting. Not particularly patiently, to be honest. Though not impatiently, either, as part of him wanted her to never come, so he would never have to deal with it. But he'd already promised himself that this was going to do it today.
It was a Friday afternoon, after school, and he'd invited his friend over for a movie. They'd been friends for...forever. Longer than they could remember, certainly. Their parents had gotten together even before they could interact, just putting the kids in their carriers and setting them on the floor next to each other.
They were even in each other's first steps home videos, having both done it at the same time. And then run into each other, knocking them both down onto their behinds, much to the amusement of their parents.
But the real point was, Luke was a boy, and she was a girl. Which was all perfectly fine, until...Well, until Luke realized that maybe he didn't just like her as the girl that knocked him down a moment after his first steps, but as a girl that was a girl.
At first he didn't really believe it. Then he figured that it would eventually go away. Then he reasoned that it would be better if he didn't say anything at all, because then they would still be friends. Sometimes boyfriend and girlfriend broke up and were never the same. When you were friends as long as they were, it would take a lot for them to not be friends anymore. Emotions like this would just make it more difficult.
Now, however, he was sick of it. He felt like one of those characters on practically any kid's television show that had a female lead. The best friend, the one that the audience knows has the hots for the leading role, but she sure doesn't. And of course that character was practically always getting into trouble. The stupid, funny one that the audience laughed at while he was stuck pining after an oblivious super heroine.
That wasn't the kind of guy that Luke considered himself to be, or wanted to be.
Basically: it sucked. And he was done with it. So he finally decided that he was going to tell her. This afternoon, right now, no more making excuses or holding back. After all, they were friends first. They would make it through it, was sure, no matter what happened. He hoped.
Luke sat down again, pushing the piece of his dark brown hair that often flopped over his eyes back, his pale blue eyes shifting towards the clock. He sighed. When was she going to get here?
Nicolette was standing on Luke's front porch, wondering if she should go in or not. Of course, he didn't realize she was standing there; why would he? She hadn't rung the bell or knocked. Not that it mattered. She could have just walked in if she wanted to. But of course, she didn't.
She pulled at her long, curly brown hair that often got her compliments, and stared at the door with worried brown eyes. Nicolette wasn't the kind of girl that got pushed around. She also wasn't the kind of girl who got nervous while getting ready to walk into her best friend's house. She was known at school for her kind ways, and her tough attitude. But at that moment, she allowed herself to accept the fact that she was upset.
She closed her eyes and thought of what she would have to say to Luke, in about five minutes. She didn't want to tell him she had to move away. She didn't want to tell him that her dad had gotten transferred. She didn't know how he would take it. She only knew how she had taken it. And she had to admit, she hadn't taken it well.
She didn't want to have to think of what it would be like, to go to a school without Luke and her other friends. Her mind stayed on Luke, though. She had told her few other friends that she was moving, but she had yet to tell Lukeāand she was moving the next day.
This is your last chance, she thought to herself. Do it now before you chicken out. With Luke's usual smiling face in mind, she knocked on the door and walked in.
At the knock on the door, Luke immediately stood up, not looking at her for a moment. Because during that moment he was plastering his usual grin on his face and getting rid of the startled and nervous look. Then he did look over, still grinning. "Hey! About time you got here, I was thinking you might not show," he said, then nodded towards the movies on the table. "I got a few, figured that we could choose which one we wanted to watch here." Also on the table was a bowl of popcorn, which he grabbed, if only to give him something to occupy himself with, as he sat down on the couch.
Nicolette gave a small smile and sat down next to Luke. Tell him! She commanded herself. "Sorry I'm so late. This one looks good," she said, holding up a movie. That doesn't sound like you telling him you're moving, she thought. "Actually, Luke... We really should talk about something. I kind of have to tell you something," she sighed.
She placed the movie next to the others and turned to face her friend. She closed her eyes and thought of how she would tell him exactly. "Luke, you're my best friend. I don't know what I would do without you as my friend," she stalled for time. "My dad got a promotion, and he's going to Indiana." She sighed and looked down at her hands that were in her lap.
Luke nodded when she grabbed the movie, about to stand up and put it in. After the movie, he reasoned. He would tell her after the movie. After all, he didn't want to ruin the afternoon for them, of the off chance that, well...he did end up ruining the afternoon by telling her how he felt. But then she said that she had to tell him something.
For a moment a frenzied thought came to him. She liked him, too. That was what she was going to tell him. It wasn't a problem at all. They both liked each other. And then, when she spoke, he was so preoccupied with the idea, that the half though that that was what she said. Relief washed over him. She liked him. He liked her. There wasn't a problem. He'd been acting like a complete idiot for the past few months for nothing.
So he leaned forward and pressed his lips against hers, not really knowing what he was doing, still giddy with the revelation that it wasn't a problem. And then what she said computed and he jerked backwards. In a moment he would feel like a huge idiot, but for now he was just shocked. "Moving?!"
Emily's Hideout; This is quite short, and I'm sorry for that. I was going to add more to it, but I decided not to. I'll add the next chapter within the day or so, perhaps. It'd be great if you could review, seeing as this is my first story to enter here. I thank you all in advance for reading. Also, the next chapter will most likely be short-even shorter than this one. Very sorry, it's just how it worked out. I may change my mind about that, though..
