So, someone called me a nerd the other day.

It caught me off guard. Over the years I've been called plenty of names, but not nerd since elementary school.

It got me thinking, what exactly is a nerd?

Well, the stereotypical version is a pimply kid with glasses, and pocket protectors that has a lisp and loves math.

Definitely not me.

Webster defines it as an unstylish, unattractive, or socially inept person; one slavishly devoted to intellectual or academic pursuits.

I'll admit, I'm not the most popular or beautiful girls at my school, but I've got a good circle of friends, average looks, and really couldn't care less about my grades as long as I'm not failing too badly.

So, let's look at who I am.

Tall, shoulder length brown hair, likes to wear black, slight acne problem. I'm very free spirited, and spend most my time writing stories or poetry or reading. I love weird foreign or independent movies that most have never heard of. I'm a lesbian, and have the two best dogs on the planet. I always have about twenty or so books I need to read, because I cannot stop buying or borrowing them. I hate fast food and collect movie ticket stubs. I'm very much an activist and campaign against animal abuse and global warming.

So, maybe I'm a nerd and maybe I'm not. If I am, then so be it. I'm proud of myself and won't change for anyone but myself. I'm above labeling people as outcast, jock, prep, or nerd.
