Author's Note: To my readers, I'm going to have to cut this story short because I'm running out of ideas and I have a million other ideas for stories. Thank you for reading! : D
"Hey Matt!" Leandra called, hailing the boy from down the hallway. "Have you talked to William lately? He's been avoiding me and it's really beginning to tick me off."
"What? Oh, he's probably just nervous about tonight. Don't worry, I'll go have a talk with him and see what's going on. By the way, where did you see him last?" Matt replied after having turned back around to face Leandra.
She thought for a moment. "I think he was down in the Art Wing working on a project or something. Maybe he was just sitting, I'm not really sure but…oh okay, walk away then."
Matt raced down the hallway to the Art Wing. William never goes to the Art Wing unless he has some major thinking to do. This is not cool, he thought to himself. On his way down the hallway, he ran into the principal and muttered an apology before rushing off again to get a punishment for running in the halls. "William, what the hell are you doing here? What's wrong now?" he said to him.
William was sitting with his back against the wall, and his patchy haired head was bent down examining his shoelaces. He looked up and smiled weakly at Matt. "There's just a lot on my mind right now. Leave me alone," he said and looked back at his shoes.
"Wait just a second here bub," Matt said really peeved. "I'm your friend, and friends talk. So what's going on? Are you nervous about the date? I know you said you're not looking to date anyone but I thought maybe this would be good for you."
"Are you homophobic?"
"What? What does that have to…"
"I asked if you were homophobic. Matt, be honest. Are you scared of gay people?" William asked. His voice was serious and it sounded hurt, and Matt couldn't see his friend like that.
"No, I'm not homophobic. Why? Are you…are you gay?" Matt asked. This realization hadn't dawned on him before and he wondered why he'd never seen it. Maybe he's not gay. Maybe he thinks Leandra is a lesbian…
"Yes," William said simply and looked back at his shoes.
Matt stared at him in silence, his mouth slightly open. "For how long?" he asked at length.
William sighed. "Maybe about two years or so. The only reason I'm even in the Art Wing is because I don't want to go on a date with Leandra because it'll feel like I'm betraying my sexuality…and my boyfriend."
"You have a boyfriend? How long has this been going on? Why didn't you say anything before? If I had known you were dating someone and for that matter gay, I wouldn't have set you up on a date with anyone, let alone a girl."
"Well, you don't have to worry about it. I'm sorry you found out but I couldn't help it any longer. Wesley and I have been going out now for a couple weeks or months. I don't really know right now…"
"Well say now more because you're best-friend Matthew is here to save the day!" Matt said and laughed at his own stupidity. "Well you don't have to worry about it. I'm going to cancel the date and I'm going to let it off smoothly. I'll just tell her your gay and that we're dating then she'll leave you alone." A smirk grew on his lips as he saw his words finally sink into his friends' head.
"What? No! You can't do that! I'm not into you, that's just…weird! And I'd feel bad…"
"Dude, shut up. Just let me handle it okay? We have one more class until the end of school and then you can go to your precious boyfriend. Okay? Don't worry, it's under control."
But it wasn't alright. Leandra didn't believe Matt, and went up to William in front of everyone in the hallways and kissed him on the lips. When William didn't return the kiss, she turned around and fled, in a burst of tears. By the end of the day, everyone had guessed or figured out that William was "into guys". The bell rang, and William left the school as quickly as possibly, and drove home where his mother, Wesley and Matt, met him.
"Honey. Is there something you want to tell me?" Melodie (his mother) asked. "It's alright. I just want to know if it's true. I'll still love you no matter what anyone else thinks."
"Mom…I'm gay. I'm in love with Wesley," he said and blushed when he saw Wesley smile widely. "And I have no interest in girls what-so-ever."
"I know dear. Welcome home," she said and embraced her tall and only son. "I love you."
"I love you too mom."
