A/N: So, this isn't exactly my best, nor my favorite, but it was in my head and was inspired by a story I was reading and I wanted to get it down before I forgot. Enjoy! Comments/critiques welcomed.

She giggles at the obvious flirting, the silly jokes, the special attention. Yet, she brushes off his serious advances. She can't believe that he likes her, so she ignores it, saying it will pass; he's just messing with her. She likes to pretend she's not effected, that she isn't phased.

She's sitting in class and a note lands secretly on her desk and she knows only he passes her the ridiculous notes decorated in cartoon hearts, smiley faces, and rainbows. Even then, she still ignores it and brushes off his advances.

Soon, it becomes routine; he advances, she retreats, neither admitting what they are really feeling. Soon, everyone else thinks they are in fact going out, but this freaks her out and she runs from him each time she sees him in the halls. She can't understand how they might possibly work and in return, he can't understand how they can't.

Soon, it's the end of the year, and she throws herself into her studies, using the end of the year testing as an excuse to not see him. She holes herself up in the library, feeling she will be safe. He seeks her out, now desperate to show her that he loves her, that they can work.

It's useless though, and he can't make her understand. He too, studies; immersing himself in school so as to forget her.

They both finish school and head their separate ways over the summer. After a long talk with her most trusted confidant, she comes to realize the opportunity she's missed and tries to call him. He doesn't answer. She hopes and prays that she isn't too late, that he'll still take her.

The summer flies by and soon they are in the new year of school. She sees all the smiling faces, the excited yelling across the halls. She sees him, arm around a girl, laughing at a joke she's just told. Something inside her breaks and she sees him as he sees she is watching. She sees the sad little smile he sends her way and she can't help but start crying.
