She's paper-thin and about to be blown away

All she does these days is breathe.

Her fingers smell like puke and her bones poke at the skin.

He thinks that it's unnatural watching her. He thinks she'll capsize, one day. Bend in on herself in weird angles. She's so sharp, now. (When she touches him, her fingers dig and it feels like blunt knives digging in.)

She throws the ball and it takes the breath out of her. Leaves her dizzy and feeling small and fluttery, like a bird. Her heart beats skittishly and, for a moment, he can see each beat beneath her skin.

And he wants to carry her away, shelter her, promise her the world and make her feel beautiful, special, loved-anything to make her stop.

She'll fade away one day.

And on that day, he won't be surprised if the phone rings and the number isn't any that he's familiar with.

When the voice softly speaks: "I'm sorry, but…"

He knows.

She's sick and on her way down.

And he'll miss her, once she's gone.
