Chapter Two: Secrets in Gym Class & Baking Brownies

Monica quickly walked into the girls' change room, hoping she would not be late. Once inside, she spotted Mimi putting up her bag. Mimi turned around and made eye contact with Monica. At once, Mimi's eyes lit up and her mouth pulled up into a smile.

"Monica!" Mimi exclaimed.

"Hey," Monica returned the greeting, "Joe was looking for you…"

"So?" Mimi tensed up a bit, "um…excuse me for a sec."

Mimi dashed into the far corner of the room and pulled out a picture of Joe she had taken secretly from her pocket.

"My love…" she said dreamily, "I shall admire you from a distance for now. But someday…we shall be together."

"What are you doing?" Monica asked questioningly.

Mimi blanched. She had not heard Monica come up from behind her.

"Uhh…" Mimi struggled to find an excuse.

Monica grabbed Joe's picture from Mimi's hands. Mimi shrieked.

"Oh, it's Joe," Monica commented, "I guess I should get rid of this for you since you hate him so much!"

"Wait!"

Unfortunately for Mimi, Monica tore the picture in half right in front of Mimi's desperate eyes.

"Waaa! My love!" Mimi cried.

"What? What are you doing?"

"Uhh…I was practicing my lines for…a play!"

"Oh! Which play?"

"Uhh, my love!"

"Really? That's great! When is it?"

"Next month!"

"Wow. I'll go see it and cheer you on!"

"No! You can't!"

"And why not?"

Mimi's mind raced for excuses. She knew that she couldn't let Monica find out that she still liked Joe after what she had said in second grade.

"You can't see it…because…it's for band members only."

"Awesome! I just happen to take band!"

"No! I mean…family studies students only."

"Hmm...that's odd. But no worries! May has family studies. She can get me tickets."

"No! You can't bring guests!"

"Oh…well that's too bad."

Mimi let out a sigh of relief. It was a shame for Mimi that Monica had another idea.

"Hey! I'll tell May to record it for me!"

"She can't!"

"Why not?"

"May takes the bus!"

"What does that have to do with it? And no, she doesn't. She walks home with me."

"Well, she has volunteering the day of the play!"

"Really? Where does she volunteer?"

"Um, I don't know."

"Then how do you-"

"Because I'm psychic!" Mimi blurted out.

Monica furrowed her eyebrow but decided to give the poor girl a chance to escape.

"Oh. Okay."

Monica walked away from her friend, a smirk on her face.

"Phew! That was close…" Mimi mumbled to herself.

"She so still likes him," Monica murmured to herself as she went to hang up her bag.

"Somebody help me!" May pleaded.

"I like dead things," An said expressionlessly. It was too bad for May that her and An had gotten lost on their way to class. Therefore, they were forced to sit beside each other.

"Okay, I get it!" May screamed, annoyed.

"I like-"

"I get it!"

There were a few seconds of silence, until An decided to speak again.

"…Can I have a cookie?"

"No."

"Can I have two cookies?"

"No!"

"Alright. I've got a great deal! You can give me three cookies. It's a bargain!"

"What's in it for me?" May asked, considering An's offer.

"You get to spend money on me!" An grinned happily.

"That doesn't sound very fair."

"Oh, but it is! You're spending your money for a good cause. My hunger!"

"How is this a bargain…I don't get it."

"I don't get it either…my brain hurts."

"Alright everyone!" the teacher stood up in front of the class.

"My name is Ms. Khalighi and I'll be your family studies teacher!"

There were low murmurs among the class.

"Anyways," Ms. Khalighi looked around with a bright smile on her face, "let's start off with picking your food lab partners when we start cooking!"

Chairs screeched while students all around the classroom went to go partner up with random people. The yammering did not stop and it was giving May and An a headache.

About ten minutes later, the entire class had picked partners, except for May and An.

"I see May and Annie don't have a partners. I guess you two will have to pair up!"

"What?!" May blurted out, desperate to find another option.

"Alright class, get to your kitchens," the teacher had completely ignored May's comment.

May grudgingly walked over to the kitchen were An was standing. She heard a drawer open beside her and quickly turned around to see An holding a butcher knife up.

"Cool!" she said in wonder, "I wonder what this does…"

"No!" May gasped, "Put that down! Someone will get hurt!"

"Oh, cool! Can I kill you?"

"No!"

"Aw, come on! It won't hurt, I swear."

The teacher decided to interrupt the girls' argument.

"Ok," she announced, "you will have a diagnostic right now to see how much you know about cooking. All the tools you need are in the drawers, refrigerators, and cupboards and you'll find the brownie recipe on your tables. Get baking!"

"Yay! Brownies!" May exclaimed happily, forgetting who her partner was.

A few minutes later, the class was bustling with noise of clattering spoons and bowls. Everyone was baking.

May was taking out the flour from one of the cupboards.

"Can we make them red?" An asked.

"Why…" May was afraid to ask.

"Because it reminds me of blood."

"No! We aren't doing that!"

"Fine…" An said as she propped herself up to sit on top of the stove.

"Watch it!" May called, causing An to jump off the stove.

"You could've burned yourself if it was turned on!"

"Would I be dead?"

"Yes!"

"Cool!"

May put her hand to her forehead. She was already getting stressed out.

A few more minutes went by and May somehow distracted An with trying to bend a spoon with her "mind."

"I can't do it!" An complained, "can I kill it?"

"Don't worry, keep trying."

"I better get a cookie out of this or someone's dying."

May shuddered at the thought. She continued stirring the batter with an electric mixer. She decided the batter would need more milk and walked away to the refrigerator, leaving the bowl unattended. Big mistake.

"Hmm…" An walked over to the bowl and peered in curiously.

An turned on the electric mixer and started mixing in the batter.

"Ha ha! I'm killing it," She exclaimed happily.

"An!" May yelled.

An immediately turned around, with the electric mixer still running. Brownie batter splattered all over May.

"Ah!" May gasped, "Look what you did!"

An decided to turn off the mixer.

"You look yummy. Can I eat you?"

May sighed and grabbed a towel. She wiped her face and returned to An.

"We need to bake it now," May said, "let's pour it into the pan."

Minutes later, the brownies came steaming from the oven. May had placed it on the counter and admired her work.

An opened a drawer and pulled out the same butcher knife she had taken out before.

"Can I cut them?"

"I don't think so."

An took a menacing step forwards.

"Why not…" she said in a low voice, her eyes turning dark.

"Uh…teacher!" May cried.

Ms. Khalighi walked over to the girls.

"Why of course you can cut them!" The teacher answered An's question happily. She sauntered off the help another pair of students.

May fearfully held the pan in front of her and was shaking. An brought the knife forward.

"Wait!" May exclaimed and pulled back.

"What?"

"Um…nothing."

"Okay then."

An brought forth the knife once again.

"Gah!"

"What the hell."

"Sorry."

This time, An didn't hesitate with coming out with the knife slowly. She swiveled it around in the air and every time, May managed to move out of the way, still shaking in fear, screaming every time.

"Quit moving!" An growled, "I almost cut a brownie!"

"What the…"

"I want to see how well this knife can cut your arm."

"What?!"

"Hmm…I wonder how this tastes…"

An dropped the knife to the floor. She immediately grabbed May's arm and bit into it. May yelped in pain.

"AHHH! Monica!"

"Wha?" Monica turned around to the faint sound of her name being called.

"What's wrong Monica?" Mimi gave her friend a questioning look.

"Hmm…I thought I heard someone call my name…oh well."

The girls continued walking back into the change room.
