Love in Death
- by Calliope -
She had a typical schedule. Some nights she'd jog for about three hours and others, she'd lay by the water fountain on the south end of the park near her place, just watching the stars between the trees. This was one of those star-gazing nights. But this night held more than the others and she was about to get caught up in something she never expected.
Being a Vampire gives you several abilities. Most depending on whose blood was transferred to you upon your Turning. It could be old blood, or new blood. Meaning an Old World Vampire could change you or a Modern Day Vampire could change you. You got their blood, not their Masters. Calliope was one of those lucky ones that had a Master change her which accelerated the time that she would have gained these abilities because his blood already held them. No matter whose blood you have though, these few are laced in with the Turning. Vampire's can sense others through certain ways. A Vampire sensing another Vampire, they feel recognition in their very being; like a calling to them of an age-old bond. When sensing a Werewolf, it's more of catching a scent of wet dog rather than a feeling. Now when it's a Human, the throat dries which makes it hard to swallow. These three things happened to Calliope in the same instant.
Rolling her head to the side, green eyes searched the dark paths in sight. Something was coming, she could hear, feel, smell and taste it. Several figures came into view; now she could see it. 'What is a Werewolf and a Vampire doing hunting a Human?' She thought curiously, completely confused. It wasn't natural. Certainly Vampires' and Werewolves hanging together wasn't either but they still did that. Well, at least a few of them did, her being one of them. But it wasn't in their blood to Hunt together. Werewolves hunted in packs of two or three and Vampires went in either pairs or alone. That's just how it was; it had nothing to do with 'rules' of not gallivanting with the Dogs but it was instinct. Understanding this, then you would be just as confused as she was when she scrunched her face up and rolled her body onto her side.
It was the sudden appearance of another Werewolf from absolutely nowhere that extracted a yelp and caused her to reverse to her other side and then into the water. She was so caught up in trying to figure this puzzle out that a second beast which leapt from the shadows of a tree in means to cut off their prey had completely caught her unawares. Thrashing soundlessly in the fountain water that was deeper than just a glance would tell, she finally emerged and gave an angry gasp for air. 'You naughty, naughty, naughty doggy.' Was her next thought, eyes narrowed into slits when they found and followed the large white wolf of a man. Huffily she rose out of the water and started after them at break neck speed for a Human, but a jog for a Vampire.
When she approached them at last, the Human which was a young man, was backed up against a large oak by deuce Weres' and the Vampire was crouched on the branch of a tree nearby, watching. She debated for two seconds only how she would approach. Should she announce her presence or just take them out without a word? Going with the former, she skipped into a run and slammed her body into the side of one of the big bulky beasts just as it was bearing down on the young man. They flew several feet away into the ground and in the collision she snatched the knife from her pocket and slide it along the curve of the Werewolf's' throat. Already ready for the next one, Calliope pivoted on the toe of her sneaker and ducked the oncoming fist/paw of the other one and caught the second set of furred knuckles with her free hand. In the same motion the young Vampiress tucked her blade into it's soft underbelly, pulling up and out at the throat. She emptied all of it's innards out onto the grassy greens of the Earth. Letting this one fall, she stepped over it and met the dark eyes of the Vampire holding the Human hostage. A low chuckle fluttered from her parted lips. "You really think that's going to keep you safe?" she asked sardonically, shifting to stand with a hand on one hip, said hip jutted out. This caused the Vampire to have a moment of confusion a.k.a. a moment of weakness. It took that one second for Calliope to close the distance and wrench the man from her kind so that she could properly tear down into the others' throat. Directly below his chin and above the space between the collar bone. She growled and ripped away with the middle of his throat locked in her jaw, wet brown blood squirting after her retreat. He didn't even have the chance to gurgle, it happened so fast. Spitting it out she watched with blue consuming green eyes the body convulse and decay. "He must not have been that old," she guessed aloud.
With the back of her hand, she wiped her mouth and put the knife away with the other, turning to face the Human. She had only caught little glimpses of him but now she could really take in his appearance. This she did gladly. Dressed in faded washed out jeans, pumas and a white button down shirt, not tucked in with the cuffs unbuttoned and the sleeves rolled up half-way, blue and yellow sweater vest over top, he looked very cute and clean cut. His hair was short, black and curly; it reminded her of one of the boys in the band on the Disney Channel. She couldn't remember the name of the band for the life of her, but in her opinion despite how young he was, he was the cutest of the three. The guys eyes were clear and bright like a cloudless spring sky around noon or a little after. They almost looked like he had contacts on like the ones that Robert Downey Jr. and Nicole Kidman wore in those movies. Amazing and completely drawing, or so it seemed to her. She took a step towards him and smiled. That there, my friends, is what set off a very unexpected reaction from him. Here are a few scenario's that she finds would have been expected:
Scenario One
She took a step towards him and smiled. Before she could open her mouth to speak he took off like a madman, screaming at the top of his lungs about Cannibals and Werewolves, nonsense as far as anyone else was concerned. Leaving her with clean up duty. Oh joy.
Scenario Two
She took a step towards him and smiled. In the next second his beautiful eyes were rolling back behind his head and he collapsed to the Earth. Leaving her with clean up duty and an unconscious body. Even better.
Scenario Three
She took a step forward and smiled. Before she could open her mouth to speak he shook himself out of what ever he was in, literally, then moved forward. Beautiful Eyes took her hands in his, despite the blood caking them, and kissed the backs of them. "Thank you so much for coming to my rescue! Please, let me pay you back. Do you need help cleaning up this mess? I'll help. Are you free tomorrow evening? I'll take you out. If you-" she pulled a hand back and shushed him with a finger just over his lips. "I'd love some help and I'm free any night you want me to be," she told him, falling into those eyes of his. He smiled and bent his head to kiss her in the middle of two blood soaked Werewolves and a decayed, throat-less Vampire.
Ah, but alas, none of those happened. Nope, she wasn't lucky to even get the third one. How very sad. Instead she got this.
"How can you smile about this!?" he shouted at her, incredulous. Disbelieving, shocked, and frightened. But more so incredulous. Taken aback, she gaped at him. At a loss for words really. "uh-er-unh... what?" she got out. He seemed to growl at her which was unnecessary in her opinion and turned his eyes onto the bodies. Which had her thinking 'nooo! Come back to me eyes! Look at meee! Shine your beautiful blueness on me, eyes!' She was such a hopeless romantic. "After all of this, you can smile! Why is that?" he shouted again, bringing his eyes back to rest on her. She smiled again. Two reasons why. One, it was funny and two, it was his eyes! And the cute way that one curl that she knew had to be the rogue fell into his eyes. "I don't know why I'm smiling!" Calliope offered, holding her hands up when he looked like he was going to go off again. "It's just what I do." The Human with Beautiful Eyes seemed to be contemplating this, which lasted nearly ten minutes. She moved slightly, bringing a wrist up so that she could see her watch; it read a quarter pass 2 in the morning. "Whoa! Look," she turned her odd eyes up to look at him to find him still staring at her, "it's late, early, depends on how you look at it but either way it's not safe, for either of us, to be out any longer. Whoever they were, they were after you for something and will probably be noticed if they're missing for too long. Do you have a place to stay?" she asked. He was silent a bit longer. Right when she was going to ask again, he answered no. It surprised her. He was dressed to nicely and yet had no where to go. "Okay. Would you like to stay with me? I can't promise a lot of food but I can promise protection. You might need it," she moved her arm around, referring to the 'mess' as she liked to call it. She suppressed a giggle, feeling like the Wheel of Fortune girl, showing off a prize or two. 'What was her name again?' she wondered.
His eyes followed her arm and then trailed back up to hers. A slight nod from him and she smiled again. The dark haired girl swiveled her head to glance at the three bodies. The two Weres had gradually shifted back to Human form and the Vampire looked stiff and sunken in. Her nose wrinkled in distaste, but she bent down and searched the Vampire since he was the only clothed one. All she found was a cell phone and nothing else. With a harrumph at the sorry find, she used it to call her Sire and tell him to send someone to clean up after her. She always was a lazy bum. Which is what her Sire reminded her over the phone, bringing a giggle from within her. After hanging up, she crushed the phone in her palm and dropped the broken pieces to the grass then stepped over the once a Vampire body towards him. "Alright, let's head out. Someone else will take care of this. So do you know why they were chasing you?" she talked and they moved away from the scene. He simply shook his head and let her continue to make a one-sided conversation in a direction that he presumed was where her home resided.
Two pairs of feet, one quiet and the other completely silent, traveled upwards in a decent townhouse that held three apartments. "I should warn you, I have a roommate that can be a bit bitchy almost all the time. She likes everything to be her way and isn't the best person to be on the bad side of." Calliope rushed to tell him, a smile ever present on her rose colored lips. In the light of the stairway he finally got a good look at his savior. She was more than half a foot shorter than him with a casual clad figure that seemed to be in perfect shape to him. Her hair was the epitome of pitch black and hung around her oval face in what he called Bohemian waves, down to her mid-back. Her eyes were probably her best feature; almond shaped and heavily outlined with thick and long eyelashes that curled up as if she had on near invisible mascara, they were a deep jade green color that had a constant edging of dusky blue that sometimes conquered the green before slipping back to the edges again. He nodded and followed a step behind when at last they made it to the third floor landing where a red door rested, undisturbed.
Stepping up to it she turned her head a bit to look up at him with those eyes of hers and a tiny smile playing at the corners of her frowning mouth. "Prepare yourself for the meeting of a lifetime." Inserting the key into the lock and twisting it, Calliope swung the door open and stepped in, "I'm home!" she announced. A mad dash from one of the rooms revealed a smaller more petite girl who couldn't have been older than perhaps 15. Shoulder length spiral curls of yellow gold and brown and hazel eyes that appeared more gold and sage than any of the other colors made her nearly the exact opposite of the young woman standing in front of him. "Callie, where have you been? And who is this? I heard you on the stairs by the way!" the girl exclaimed, two fists placed on her hips. Her eyes narrowed at her roommate and then at their guest. "Did you? Well then that's even more reason for you to be nice to our new house guest, isn't it?" the dark haired girl grinned. Before her friend could respond she reached forward and hugged her. The smaller girl returned it without hesitation and stepped closer after they pulled away from each other. Linking hands loosely, Calliope smiled up at the man and introduced her roommate. "This is Mia, my roommate. Oh, and I'm Calliope by the way. Sorry I forgot to mention that. But then again you didn't exactly relinquish your name either." He looked between the two of them, at their linked hands, lowered his eyes to the floor and had a feeling his cheeks were probably tinged with pink. Clearing his throat he answered, "Cameron."

I have a prologue for this story but I haven't gotten it done yet so it will be up soon. I hope you like the first chapter. It's kind of rushed. Please let me know of any errors and whether you like it or not. Thanks!
