A/N: Hey there. Got this idea while watching the music video for "If I were a boy" by Beyonce. Enjoy.
The loud, high pitched screeching of my alarm clock jolted me awake. I groaned and rubbed my dry eyes, wishing that this day could already be over with. Today was the day. I would tell her today. As I dragged myself to the shower, I could hear the noises of her making breakfast downstairs. As I got ready, I tried to keep my mind blank, keep myself from jumping to conclusions. As I trudged down the stairs, she called out to me, "I'm leaving, babe!" And before I could stop her, the door was slamming shut and she was gone.
I sighed, not wanting to wait any longer but I didn't have a choice. I'd tell her at the party tonight. Sitting on the dining room table was a plate of pancakes and bacon and a cup of coffee made just the way I liked it. I couldn't help but smile, she knew me well, but there was one thing she didn't know. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't eat the breakfast Cassie, my girlfriend, had made me. Just one bite and it felt like a giant rock in my stomach.
I dumped the rest of it in the trashcan before I grabbed my keys and my wallet and headed out the door. As I sat in the early morning rush hour traffic, I thought of way to tell her, but everything sounded wrong. Too insensitive or too callous. And that's how my entire day went, me debating on how to tell her, when to tell her.
When I got home that night, the sun just barley setting, I still wasn't ready. Maybe, just maybe, some impromptu, yet heartfelt way to say it would pop into my head when it was time. But she wasn't there. A note, silver ink written on her pink stationary paper, was taped to the fridge.
Ricky,
Got home early, Janet called and asked me to come help set up.
See you there, hun.
Love,
Cassie. xoxo
I groaned and headed up the stairs to change into jeans and a black and blue striped button up. On the car ride to Janet's, Cassie's best friend since high school, I worried. Not only would Cassie be there, but Veronica would be too.
I sighed, pleasure still rippling through my body as I lay in bed, next to the love of my life. I heard her digging in her purse then light up a cigarette. I smiled and relaxed back, taking a drag when she offered the cigarette to me.
"You know what," She asked me as I blew the smoke out in rings.
"Hmm?" My eyes were closed.
"I love you."
"I love you too, Veronica."
I was standing in Janet's backyard now, a dance floor had been set up and a DJ was working the music and lights were flashing around the entire backyard. A table with food set on it was near the gate. I picked at the food, hungry from not eating all day.
"Ricky!" I heard a too familiar voice call out.
"Hey baby," I murmured.
Cassie wrapped her arms around me a pressed her lips to mine. I sighed into the kiss. She thought I was happy; I just wanted to get her off me. She pressed closer before finally letting me go, a grin on her face. She smelled like Vanilla. I had once loved that smell. Especially when I rolled over onto her pillow during the nights and I could smell it on her pillow, or in the mornings when the scent was still lingering in the bathroom. Now it just disgusted me. There was a new perfume I loved to smell.
"Enjoying the party?" I asked, keeping my voice calm and polite.
"Oh yeah, I was just about to go dance. Join me?"
I nodded and followed her out to the dance floor. A slow song was just ending, the music speeding up and blurring into a fast paced song. Cassie pressed her back to me and moved against me and I tried to dance back, tried to seem interested. This didn't excite me anymore. This wasn't as fun as it used to be. We danced for a few songs before she got tired and decided to go inside and help Janet get the dinner ready. I stood off to the side of the dance floor, watching the crowd of bodies move together to the beat of the song.
"Wanna dance?" A smooth, enticing voice asked from behind me. I turned to Veronica, and inhaled sharply. She was wearing a red dress that stopped a few inches above her knees. The material slid over her curves and made me want more. I looked her up and down and smiled.
"You're looking pretty amazing tonight," I said, holding my hand out to her. She accepted it and led me to the dance floor. She didn't press up against me like Cassie did. She kept her distance and swayed her body to the music, her hands above her head. She knew how to dance to the music and look sensual and not look like a whore. I could smell her, the soft hint of her designer perfume. The smell I loved.
I tried to dance along but couldn't help and stop every few moments just to watch her. It seemed like a lot of people did that. Stopping what they were doing to look at her. She had the aura about her that made you just want to stare at her. She knew she was good looking and she flaunted it. She stared at me with those dark brown eyes of hers and smiled.
"I'm going to tell her tonight," I murmured.
Veronica's smile faded, "Why?"
"Because she needs to know."
"Fine," She muttered, not looking at me anymore. "I'm gonna go dance with someone else."
It was just then that Cassie bounded over, a grin on her face. "Hey honey!"
"Can we talk?"
"Sure," She chirped. Always so happy.
I led her over the patio, which was deserted. "Cassie, I need to tell you something that I should've told you a long time ago. I'm just gonna come right out and say it." I watched her face as I said this, the grin was still on her face, and her eyes alight with happiness.
"I'm cheating on you."
And just like that, all the happiness had faded from her eyes and that smile was gone from her face. Her eyes were red and tears were rolling down her already blotchy cheeks. Some sadistic little thing inside of me got pleasure from crushing her heart like this.
"W-what?"
"I'm cheating on you."
I watched her as she jumped up from the chair she had been sitting in and run out of the backyard. The screeching tires of her two year old silver Camry could be heard and then the roar of her engine as she burned off down the road.
Later that night, around two-ish, I came home. Gladly, her car wasn't in the driveway. As I plopped down in the living room on the leather couch she had bought us when she moved in, I turned the TV onto the news. The news reporter was talking about a crash that had happened on I-5.
Earlier this evening, here on Interstate 5, a young woman who is believed to be either drunk or a careless driver swerved across 3 lanes and smashed into a truck and rolled over 3 times and smashed into the road guard. Officials are assuming she was not wearing her seat belt, for she was thrown from the silver 2006 Camry. Unfortunately, the woman was pronounced dead when the EMTs arrived. Officials have stated that the young woman's name was Cassandra Evenfall.
