Author note: This is a story that expresses my opinion on the destruction of wolf habitat. The entire thing is from a wolf's POV.
I padded silently through the forest, the scent of rabbit in my nose. There were birds singing somewhere. My ears perked up at the sound of it. I started to pick up speed, running back to my home. Where the pack was. Walking in, I could see my mate and our pups, too big now to be considered really young; the pack leader was sitting on a rock. I walked over and gave her a small rabbit I had caught. She licked my muzzle. I walked over to the small brook where the water ran through. After lapping up some, I went back to my mate. Laying down beside her, and looking in the sky I saw small points of white filling it. Everything was at peace, I loved my home.
The next day I woke up. A pup jumped on my back nipping at my ears. I shook it off, it yelped where it landed, then ran back to me. I shrugged it off, and went to my mate. She was lying with our other pups. I grinned at the sight of it. Our pack leader started to howl, and I looked up at him where he stood standing. It was a sign for us to go hunting. Some of the wolves formed a small pack and we headed out.
After going for a while, we found a moose. I could smell the warmth coming from it. I barked slightly and the wolves around me formed a circle around it. When it was facing a different direction, I jumped in and nipped at the back leg then jumped back to the circle. It turned to face me and I saw it's eyes widen in fear. Another pack member jumped behind it and bit it. It turned, and we continued this until it was down. I went in and started to take a bite out before another wolf shoved me out of the way. I fought back in and took another bite. When everyone was done, we took it back to the pack. I watched as the others ate. After that was over, I watched as the alpha male padded out of the clearing. All the pack started to follow him. We went for a while before we reached a small cave in dense forest. The alpha sat down. We all took that as a sign that this is where we would stay.
The next day, I got up to hear a strange rumbling sound. It was growing closer, and it scared me. My spine stiffened and my fur stood on end. I growled deep in my throat, and saw the alpha pad forward, sniffing the air. He howled, a long and drawn out sound, and the pack gather around him and we left. I stayed behind; I could always find them by scent. I walked to the forest edge and looked through. There was a giant thing tearing up trees. Just the sight scared me. I was scared to go any further, but then I saw some things come out of it. They were walking on two legs, and they carried something. Looking around I saw more of them. I was scared, and turned to run away when I heard a loud banging sound. Something brushed by me, barely missing me. The bit that hit me cut off the tips of my fur. What was that? I didn't stay to find out, I ran as hard as I could to reach my pack. It didn't make any sense, why would they do that? Whatever it was, I feel like I should like I'm happy it missed me, the weird thing was, I hadn't done anything to them.
When I found them, I stopped running, walked panting over to my mate and nuzzled her. Looking around I saw we were in a small cave, much like the first one we had, only this one was a bit bigger. I layed down, and slept. When I woke up, I heard a high, whining sound. I padded out of the cave and saw one of the pups in something on the ground. His paw was caught in it and was bleeding severely. The thing appeared to have teeth, and they were gripping his paw. I whined, and sniffed him. He looked so sad, but there was nothing I could do. I sat down and howled, loud and mournful.
The alpha male came forward and looked at me, and then we started to leave. I joined the rest of the pack, slightly hesistantly, but I still went with them. We left behind the pup, after all, what could we do?
The next day we were completely out of our old forest. I felt like something was pushing us, far from what we had loved and lived in for so long. I glanced at my mate. What would happen to the pack? We left the forest and into an open plain. It was bright, and I was pretty sure anything could see us. We had gone a couple days without food, but I was used to it. Our pack has had to go without food often. It was just part of our nature.
All of a sudden, about halfway through the plain, there was a loud bang. It hurt my sensitive ears, and looking over, I saw one of the pack lying on the ground with a small hole in his side. What had he done to anyone? I looked upward into the sky and saw a thing similar to the ones tearing up trees; only this one was in the air, with something like wings sticking up on either side. Another bang went off, and my mate was hit. She yelped from where she stood next to me. The alpha howled and started to run for the forest. What was left of the pack ran with him, out of the way of danger. I ran too, feeling scared and confused. What had we done?
Reaching the forest, we stopped. I turned around and looked up, the thing was turning around to leave. When it was gone, I wanted desperately to go back in the field, but we would have to wait until we thought the thing was gone. After waiting for a long time, the pack padded back to the field. My mate and the other pack member were dead. The alpha and his mate started to howl mournfully. I joined in as well as the others. We howled until it became dark. After that we left and started to, once again, find a new home.
We walked for a good long time before we found a new home. It was another cave, and it seemed like it would be a good home for us. Looking at the pack, I was struck painfully by the thought of our losses. Why did anyone want to hurt us? What had we done?
The alpha decided it was time to hunt so we left to find food. Luckily, we found a couple rabbits, not much, but it was enough to get by. We carefully pounced on them. The meat tasted good and filling after going without food. When I'd had my fill, we went back with it so others could eat.
The next day, we left again. The alpha led us to a new place. I hoped we would stay here, and live in peace just like we always did. Too bad my wish didn't come true. After couple days of staying here happily, more of the things that tore up trees came. They growled at us, I whined and looked at the alpha for what we should do. He growled, and we ran. I heard more of the bangs just like before, and remember what they had meant then, what they had caused. I was right, looking back; I saw three more pack members lying down. I whined, and ran even harder.
A loud bang echoed through the forest, and I fell down, a sharp pain stabbing my side. One of the things came out and saw me. He pulled at my fur, and I started to find it was getting hard to breath. I struggled and gasped, trying to fill my lungs with air, it was painful, but I had to try, I wasn't ready to die. Another one came and they seemed to be talking. I heard weird sounds coming form them, like 'hunter' and 'fur'. I whined, slow, soft sound and slowly I started to lose my sight. My last thought was why? What did I do? I didn't do anything…
