I ripped off the packing tape to the last box of clothes and began hanging them up in my brand new walk-in closet, just like I'd done with all the others. I walked back out into my room and really looked around for the first time. It was a simple room. It had beige walls and a lovely pine wood floor, but I'd spiced it up with bold splashes of reds and browns. The bed comforter was a deep burgundy and all the furniture had a deep brown lacquer to it. It would suit me well, I thought.
My two best friends, Betsy and Savannah, walked through the door a second later. They smiled as I continued to just stare at my room. I couldn't believe it; I was finally on my own! I was all alone too, well except for the roommate that I was going to have to find. That was low priority at the moment though; I wanted the place to be just mine for a little while.
I guess I should introduce myself, huh? My name is Fiona Garrison and I'm finally out of college. Don't get me wrong, it was the time of my life, but I'm just glad to be done with school; especially since I had had to take 2 years after the basic 4, for law school. I just passed the bar exam though, and I'm one of the youngest ever so I guess it all paid off. You see I'm only 20. I had skipped a few grades in school and gone the whole AP route to try and cut down on future costs that I was sure were going to kill me later. It worked. I now work at Buckley & Sons as a junior partner. I start on Monday and I just know it's going to be amazing. And the pay is great too!
Savannah brought me out of my contemplating with a pat on the back.
"Can you believe it?" she asked quietly. "You're the first of us to actually have your own place. You're so lucky!"
I smiled to myself and then nodded. It was amazing, especially since I'm normally the last one to do anything when it comes to the three of us. I was the last to drive, the last to get a boyfriend; God I still hadn't even lost my virginity yet. This was a major step up for me and I couldn't wait for tonight!
"So…" Betsy said. "You want us to go pick up the food for tonight?"
If you're wondering, since tonight is my first actually night in my new home, I'm throwing a party, like any sane person would.
"Nah," I told them. "You guys go home and make yourself look pretty for tonight. I'll do the rest of the stuff. It's no big deal."
They nodded and walked out the door waving and blowing air-kisses in my direction. I did the same until the door shut firmly behind them. After that I walked over to my stereo and plugged my iPod in. I turned it to my everyday listening playlist and cranked it up when All That Remains came on. I slowly danced to the music that always seemed to soothe me, even though it scared all my friends, and then started to get ready to head out and get the stuff for the party.
My first stop was the grocery store down the road. I grabbed some chips and cokes and cookies and all the other food groups that a group of college kids would eat. I couldn't do much else besides that, plus the booze was being brought by my other friend Brett. He was the only one of us that was 21, so we had to rely on him.
After the grocery store I went to the dry cleaners and picked up my dress. It was beautiful; off the shoulders with a deep V showcasing my neck, a gorgeous aquamarine color with a black lace cover over it. It was the perfect dress for me and Betsy and Savannah said it definitely highlighted my coloring, with my shoulder length black hair, my grey/blue eyes and my porcelain skin tone.
Once that was done I went back to my NEW *YEA* home and started to get ready for the party. I took a quick shower and then blow dried my hair. After that I styled it into loose curls and then put on some make up. Nothing much, I never really thought it looked right on my. Ten minutes later the first guest started arriving and I became the good little hostess that I am.
The party wasn't anything special; your basic drinking games, lots of dirty dancing and a few people passing out. Good thing I had the best friends ever, right? The kind that was willing to cart those losers out of my house and chaperon them home, and all with minimal complaining too. Cha right, they were cursing me to every corner of hell when I asked them to do it, but they grudgingly agreed.
When everyone was finally gone I quickly changed into my favorite pair of pajamas; a cream colored tank top and a pair of cream, green, and black stripped shorts, and proceed in getting ready for bed.
I love to get all comfy and curl up in bed with my iPod and a great book, especially right before I go to sleep. But before I could do that I had to make sure that my new place was locked up nice and tight for the night, or else I'd never be able to relax. I walked from window to window checking on the locks and then to the front door once more for the night. Everything was in check and I started to walk back to my bed. As I did I heard a strange noise coming from the closet. Thinking it was some jerk that thought he could crash here for the night I pulled open the door ready to yell his ears off his head. As the door swung open I froze. My closet was gone and in its place was a swirling blue vortex… and I was getting pulled into it.
