Chapter One
In the year 2000, a hidden organization called Z.O.I.C (Zodiac Organization for Indigo Children) is run by a group of 12 other organizations. These organizations, each known for their own individual and unique features, take the Indigo children (people with these special abilities) to Z.O.I.C. whether they want to or not. Many people feel that they are a threat, some think that they're just objects that can be used for whatever they please, so this organization became a school to teach these indigo children to control their powers. Or that's what they told people anyway, but I knew the truth for I lived this life almost my entire life, though I'm still young so that entire life-thing has yet to fully begin. I guess you could say it was just a way to keep people like me in check. If we did something wrong in their eyes, we were punished severely. Depending on our power that is, do to the fact that some of us had stronger powers than others, and those people were given harsher punishments since the government officials in charge of this "project" believed we could take it. We are people trapped in invisible cages unable to escape the fate that envelops us in this darkness, but for you to truly understand my story I'll have to take you back to the very beginning, back to when this horrible nightmare came true….
"I wonder who wrote this, it looks like a diary to me. Oh crap, I shouldn't be reading this!" I said immediately after remember what my mother told me, and then scolding myself for not stopping myself sooner.
"Shouldn't be reading what?" a familiar voice said from behind me.
"I just picked it up and started reading it without thinking. I'm really sorry dad." I said giving the aqua colored notebook to him. Still sitting on the floor, hoping for a small punishment instead of a horrible one, I heard a small chuckle from next to me.
"There's nothing to be sorry for sweet-pea. This was your mother's diary from when she was about your age. Actually, this was what I was looking for." He began and his expression became more serious, "Before you're mother passed away, she gave me her will, and in it there was a list of a few things she wanted me to give to you when you turned a certain age, but because of our little dilemma, I thought I should give them to you now." With a sigh, he handed me the notebook and continued. "This was the last thing on the list, the rest of it is already in a bag waiting for you down stairs, now let's get a move on kiddo, your Aunt is waiting for you."
"You're still not coming? I-I don't –"I began.
"I know, and I'll make sure that I find you, but there's just something I have to do first, ok?" He said trying to reassure me, which didn't really work, but I went with it for his sake and nodded.
"Everything that you want is already at her house right?" he asked.
'No, the last and most important thing that's not at her house will be you!' I thought, but just nodded my head again to him.
"It's going to be your birthday soon, so cheer up a little, I won't be gone long, and I definitely won't miss your birthday for the world." He began, and smiled that smile that always cheered me up. "Now how old are you going to be again, 30?"He said with a smirk.
"Dad, you know how old I'm going to be. And…I know you love me and want to protect me, but I'm stronger than what I was before."
"I'm not going to let them take you again!" My dad's usual calm demeanor becoming sad and angry. I still hadn't had the heart to tell him the things that I had remembered from back then and the things that were happening to me right now. "I won't do it Rayna. I already lost your mother and your brother, I can't handle loosing you too." He said more calmly
"Ok." Was all I could muster. I was kind of shocked that he still talked about that. It seemed like ages ago, and I guessed he still felt responsible. He shouldn't have though, it was my fault and no one else's. My dad was right though. I should feel happier since my 17th birthday was coming up. Dad will be there, Aunt Tracy and my cousins Lacy and Lance will be there, and maybe dad will find Blake and Reece before then too, I thought. That day I thought about all the good things that could happen in the next two weeks. Even though my dad was going to be leaving me for a while, I was actually quite giddy.
The next thing I remember was my dad, he said, "Now that's my girl" after glancing at me then back at the road. "I was wondering where that smile was hiding." He said with a chuckle. "I know that things may be hard at first, but you'll get used to it and make new friends. All you have to do is be yourself and show off that beautiful smile of yours that I always love."
"Daaad." I said, my cheeks growing warmer by the second.
"Well it is. You're my little girl and if anyone makes that smile of yours disappear, they'd better run cause I'll be coming after them." Then we both started cracking up. Even though he did embarrass me at times, he could always make me laugh. He always made things better, and I remember hoping that whatever was happening between him Reece and Blake could be made better again too.
"But seriously sweet pea, I hate it when you're sad. And the person that makes you that way will be dead meat."
"Dad, just focus on Blake and Reece. I'll be fine, don't worry, ok?" I said turning to face him, well as much as I could in the passenger seat of his truck. If I'm remembering correctly, dad's truck was one of the older models of the Toyota 3000. Anyway, I'll continue with this short clip of my life.
"Hey can't a dad worry about both of his kids and one of their friends?"He said glancing at me again.
I nodded, "Yeah." Then I faced the front again and turned on the radio. During the rest of the trip to Aunt Tracy's, the only sounds that were heard were songs off of station 107.9 and the low hum of the engine. We passed miles and miles of buildings and vast landscape, some were prettier than others. When Kelly Clarkson's song Since You've Been Gone it felt like there were heavy weights on my eyelids, I couldn't fight it anymore, and I was out like a light. When I woke up I realized it was two in the morning I looked at my dad, and the dark circles that resided under his eyes.
"Hey dad, we should stop for a while. Aren't you tired?" I said yawning. When I looked at him he nodded.
"But I've had five cups of coffee and I have a few more cups left. I just wanna get you to your Aunt's house as quickly and safely as possible. And to do that I'll have to drive straight to her house without many stops along the way. I don't need them finding out where you are, alright?" I mumbled an 'ok' as I drifted back into dreamland.
The next thing I remember, I was in a bedroom somewhere and the sun was shining through the window, hitting my arm with a blanket of warmth.
I'm going to have to speed this up a bit since I promised to help out my Aunt with a few things.
So to sum it up, I was at my Aunt's house, in the guest bedroom, that was now my room. She told me my dad carried me inside the house at 6 am and left me a note instead of waking me up. It was 3 pm when I woke up. Man, I can't believe I slept that long. Anyway, Aunt Tracy said that dad was in a rush and that he was sorry that he couldn't say good bye to me in person, but he was worried about the guys. Then she gave me the letter and said, "Rayna, if you want, I can make your favorite for dinner tonight. The kids won't be back for a few more days, it's April vacation so they get two weeks off from school. So lucky you, you don't have school for ten more days, huh…." She was rambling by this point, I think she was kind of nervous. That day seems like years ago. And I bet I made it seem that way too, but in actuality, it was just yesterday. ^_^
P.S. I've got to go now, but I'll tell you about what the letter said next time!
I closed my diary, and put it in my secret hiding spot. The one I found four years ago during summer break. I had just put my bag down next to my bed when I realized that one of the floor boards was loose. I lifted it up and got an idea, this would become my secret hiding spot.
To be continued…
