Summary: Ericka Barr has always been different. No friends, and shy, she either blended into the background, or was singled out as a freak. But what happens when a new girl at school decides to be her friend?

This is my first story, so please don't be too hard on me!

I don't remember much about being born. But I do remember the colors. They were everywhere - blues and greens and reds and everything in between. They were coming from the other babies in the nursery. They were swirling around their bodies, different shades of all the colors of the rainbow.

I haven't told many people that. When I was little, I mentioned it to my mom and she told me that I have a great imagination.

I don't know why I can see the colors that surround a person, his or her aura, but I do know this, it's made my life totally crazy. For the longest time, I viewed my ability as a curse, but all that changed when Alex showed up.

It was the first day of junior high and I was looking at the auras of the people around me. I first noticed her because of her aura. It wasn't the normal light purples and pinks of most girls my age. No, it was turquoise, bright red and dark purple. Over the years, I had learned what certain colors meant about a person's personality. I immediately knew from the turquoise that she was nice. The bright red meant that she was a leader, and the dark purple meant that she cared about how people viewed her, but not in a self-conscious "is my hair frizzy" way.

Another reason was because she was heading towards me. That was strange because most people avoided me. The reason for that is up until about fourth grade, I mentioned my ability to people. Like when I was in kindergarten, I looked at the teacher and said, "That's interesting."

"What?" my teacher asked.

"You're blue and green," I replied. That immediately got me classified as "weird". The thing was, I kept doing it. I was constantly mentioning people's auras and making sure that I would have absolutely no friends when I got older. So, I was extremely surprised when this girl walked up to me and sat down next to me. "Hi," she said. "I'm Alex Rankins."

"I'm Ericka Barr," I said.

"Why are you sitting all by yourself?" she asked. Now that question caught me off guard. I knew that I should probably lie to her, but I also knew that eventually she would find out about my alleged power from the brats from my old school. They had pretty much turned me into an alien who was there to destroy the human race.

"Well," I said, "it's because the kids from my old school either think that I'm an alien or a compulsive liar."

"Why do they think that?" Alex asked. Again, I was stumped.

"Ummmm," I said.

"Are you a compulsive liar?" Alex asked, clearly reconsidering her decision to sit next to me.

"No," I said quickly. "I just… it's… complicated. I don't think I should tell you. Not yet anyways."

"So you're going to tell me eventually?" she asked, surprised by my answer.

"Maybe," I said.

"Oh," she said, looking slightly disappointed.

"Why'd you sit down next to me?" I asked, genuinely curious.

"I don't know," she said. "I just felt like I should."

"That's an interesting answer," I said. I was probably looking at her like she was crazy.

"I'm not always that weird," she said smiling.

I smiled back. "I'm used to weird."

That's when they started attempting to get us to quiet down so the assembly could start. It took a while.

First the Assistant Principal talked to us. Then the principal said some stuff. I'm not exactly sure what either of them said. I wasn't really paying attention. I was focusing on the fact that I might have a new friend. I was actually pretty excited.

It took me awhile to come back to Earth and realize that groups of people were getting up and following different teachers out of the gym. "What's going on?" I asked Alex.

"What do you have first period?" she asked.

I looked down at my schedule, "History with Mrs. Kraus."

"Cool," said Alex. "We have first period together."

"That doesn't really answer my question."

She smiled, "We leave with our first period teacher and follow them to the classroom."

"I knew that," I said

"Sure you did," said Alex, rolling her eyes.

It was only a couple of seconds before they called for Mrs. Kraus' class. Alex and I got up with a couple of other students and walked over to the short brown haired lady who the vice principal had indicated was Mrs. Kraus. Once everyone was there, she told us to follow her. She led us up the stairs and to room 212. Once we had all sat down, she started talking about how she ran her classroom. I think she was just trying to scare us. It was working on some kids too. It wasn't working on me and Alex though. I could tell it wasn't working on Alex because she gave me a look from where she was sitting next to me that clearly said she couldn't believe that some kids were freaking out over what she was saying. I mean, did those kids seriously think that what Mrs. Kraus was saying about the eighth and ninth graders running us over was true?

I was glad when the bell rang. I couldn't wait to get out of that classroom. Alex caught up with me once we got out on the hallway.

"Can I see your schedule?" she asked.

"Sure," I said, handing it to her.

"We have the first four periods and eighth period together."

"Great," I said. "What do we have next?"

"P. E.," answered Alex.

"Let's get going then," I said happily. The rest of the day went on in pretty much the same way. We went to our first four periods, thoroughly enjoying ourselves. Our fifth, sixth, and seventh period classes where right next to each other. Once we got our locker assignments, we found out that they were right next to each other. It was a really great day. By the end of the day, I was actually starting to think that I might enjoy junior high after all. I was even thinking about telling Alex why I was so good at knowing what a person's personality was like.

So...What'd you think?
