13Chapter 2
"Wow, the jet is even bigger than I remember it to be," Ryan said to her mother.
"Just wait until you see the inside, hun," Craig said to her. "It looks even bigger."
"That's cool," Ryan said as she rolled her eyes, she was just trying to make conversation; the car ride there was so quiet she couldn't take it any longer. "How long of a flight is it to the Hamptons?"
"I would have to say that it is about an hour or so," Craig said. As he lifted their suitcases out of the trunk of the car. "Ryan, sweetie, how many bags did you pack? You know we are only going to be there for a month right?"
"What! No one said that we were going to be there that long; I didn't pack enough for a month. And what am I going to do for whole month?" Ryan yelled to her mother, as she walked up the steps to board the jet. "This summer is going to be a total snore-fest."
"Don't worry, the Carlson's are going to be there," Valerie said, while following her daughter up the stairs. "I am pretty sure that they have a son and a daughter, one of them is around your age."
"Yeah Hun, you used to love playing in the sand with that boy, what's his name, hmm, don't worry it will come to me," Craig said, while sitting down.
"Craig, I do believe that his name is, Blain," Valerie said.
"No mom, his name is Blake," Ryan clarified, as she rolled her eyes. "I remember him now, he was like way into Stars Wars, or some lame show like that."
"That's it, Ryan you are a smart one," Craig said with a grin on his face.
"Yeah dad, it's really hard to remember some guy's name," again as Ryan said this she rolled her eyes. "Well I am going to read some magazines and listen to my iPod; I will be sitting at the back."
"Okay, the jet will be taking off soon so you better get seated." Valerie said as she sat down in her seat by the window. "I always loved flying, from up high everything looks so nice, it's amazing how small things look from in the sky."
"Yeah, mom really amazing," Ryan said as she got out her magazine and her iPod. "Would one of you tell me when I can use my cell? I want to ask Janessa how the barbeque is going."
"Sure thing, but it won't be for a little while, after we are in the air at the desired altitude it should be okay, but we will have to wait for the pilot to say so," her dad said. Sometimes he could get all technical, all she had been looking for was a yes, but no, she had to get a whole big speech on flying.
After 35 minutes of listening to her iPod and flipping through her magazine Ryan was bored. When she was younger the pilot would always come over and ask her if she wanted to help him fly, but not this time. Ryan had to sit in her seat at the back of the jet wondering if her friends were having a good time without her. Sneakily she slipped her cell phone out of her purse and flipped it open and dialed Niki's number. Niki answered and right when she heard Ryan's voice she set up her four-way calling so that all four girls could talk to each other. Ryan's parents hadn't even told her if it was okay to use her phone yet, but she didn't care she was bored, and she wanted to talk to her friends.
"Hey guys," Ryan whispered as she ducked her head down so she was hidden behind the seat in front of her. "How's the Barbeque so far?"
Ava answered quickly in a bored tone, hoping to sound as though she was having no fun, she didn't want Ryan to feel upset. "It's not the same without you here Ry."
Ryan smiled at that, happy that her friends missed her already.
"We totally miss you Ryan," Niki said "Have you landed yet?"
"No, we're still on the plane, I'm not really supposed to be talking to you guys right now" Ryan replied rolling her eyes as she flipped a page in the magazine she was reading.
"Ugh, I hate that about flying, I'm always on my phone, I don't think I could go that long with out it," Vanessa said as she grabbed a hot dog off the table.
"I know what you mean Nes, and I absolutely hate it when my ears pop, that bugs me so much!" Ava said. "I always go through so much gum," Ryan pulled a piece of gum out of her purse and popped it in her mouth, realizing at that moment how to get rid of the popped feeling in her ears. She had been trying to remember what she was supposed to do to get her ears back to normal since the plane took off.
"Man, flying without you guys is so boring" Ryan complained as she chomped away at the minty piece of gum.
"Don't worry Ryan, you'll be home with us before you know it," Vanessa assured her.
"She's right Ryan, my winter vacation flew by, and I didn't have you guys with me," Niki said recalling her family trip over the christmas break.
"Nik, you were gone for four days!" Ava said as she tried to stifle her giggles.
"Well, I think we have to go now Ryan, but call us when you get the chance!" Niki said, her voice slightly bitter from Ava's last comment.
"Alright, I'll talk to you guys soon!" Ryan said as she flipped her phone shut with a snap.
As Ryan closeput away her cell she thought about how her life could change from this one month away from her friends. They could find new friends, they could all get boyfriends, and she even thought about how they could replace her. She could just see it this girl would be tall blond and always have the best gossip. Ryan would be out like last seasons Silver Jeans. She could not let that happen it would be like her worst nightmare, even worse then having to spend a whole month in the Hamptons with her parents, when she could be out sun tanning with her BFFs.
"Ryan, did you hear that?" Ryan's mother called to her from her seat at the front. "The jet will be landing in 10 minutes, you have to put your seat belt back on, and get your stuff ready."
"Okay mom I will, thanks for telling me." Ryan said, while in her head she was saying "Finally, this has been the longest most boring flight in the history of flying."
