When Jonah laid eyes one me, his laid back demeanor changed. He glared as he pushed past me on his way out of the restaurant's double door. "This is the second time you've stood me up today." he hissed venomously. "You'd better have a damned good excuse." he finally warranted himself a glance in my direction.
I stared quietly looking up at him. "I lost track of time at the mall. I'm horribly sorry." I whispered.
He scoffed as he spun around on his heel. "That's real rich coming from you." he spat as he stalked off toward his silver Range Rover.
"Jonah... wait!" I called after him. I couldn't believe that I was actually chasing after him in my mother's vintage Chanel's... but I was.
"What do you want?" he hissed stopping mere inches for the car's driver door.
"I'm sorry. Let's just go inside and talk about it."
He seemed to hesitate for a moment. "I don't know." he muttered more to himself than to me.
"Come on, " I urged. "Let's go somewhere else besides Red Robin."
He looked at me questioningly. "Where?"
"Uhh, how about Panera Bread?" I offered. "They have some really good food there."
He shrugged after several moments of silence, and turned away from me before saying "This is your last chance, if you stand me up again this time..." he trailed off without tacking on the threat.
"I truly am sorry though." I said pushing myself into his chest. I felt him freeze against my body before he wrapped his arms around me. I then felt some of the tension release and him starting to relax.
"You're still a bitch." he murmured pulling away as he climbed into his SUV.
"I'll accept that one, this time. But the next time you say it to me, you better mean it." I replied as I walked back over to my car.
" Do you want something in particular?" I inquired as we made our way up to the counter in Panera Bread.
"No, just get me whatever you get, as long as it's not a salad. You have no idea how much I hate those..." he said shivering in disgust.
"I can assure you Reynolds, you won't see me eating a salad unless it has meat in it." I winked at him before turning around. After I quickly ordered the food and paid for it, we made our way to a table in the back corner of the restaurant. "Drink?" I asked sitting my purse down.
"Coke's fine." he replied sliding into the both and slipping his phone back into his jacket pocket.
I went to collect the drinks before taking my seat.
"Yes, I'm sure. I'd hate to impose ... I know Uncle David, but I'd just feel more comfortable if I stayed at home. ... Yeah, I'm sure. I'm just gonna swing by this party around 10ish, but I promise that I'll text you as soon as I get home... Yes Uncle David, I'm sure. I'll even call my dad to make sure he knows about the change in plans. Of course. I love you tooo. Bye." he hung up the phone and looked at me feigning weariness and exhaling. "Is you father always like that? Damn, i didn't call him to play 21 questions." he said taking the drink I offered him and gulping down as much as he could.
I chuckled to myself. "That's one of the joys of having a lawyer for a father. He can especially spot when you're lying. You know he passed that gift down to me in the immense gene pool that my brother and I shared." I took a small sip of my lemonade before continuing. "So what's the real reason you called me for?" I asked staring him straight in the eye.
"Basically, I just wanted to make sure that you were okay. It's not everyday that some shit like that goes down... That's something that you'd read about in the news - see in movies. Never played out in real life before your eyes." he rambled on not meeting my eyes.
"Are you sure?" I inquired raising an eyebrow at him.
He sat up straighter and leaned forward onto the table, folding his hands before himself. He gave me his signature cocky grin before he spoke again, "You're not the only one without a spine Gordon. Besides, my father - your uncle Tristian - is a lawyer too. I've picked up a few things."
I rolled my eyes and nodded in agreement, and we stared at each other quietly. Oddly, it wasn't one of those awkward silences which I always feared. It was a good, comfortable silence where no one had anything to say, and we didn't make idol conversation (which is the bane of my existence).
"Soooo, do you want to talk about what happened?" Jonah asked softly staring at me with his strangely colored green eyes.
... Maybe I spoke too soon?
I sighed deeply and stared out the window, "It's just that my father knows that I took it the hardest when my mother died..." That sounded wayyy more selfish than I meant. I flinched before I continued. "I mean, I was heartbroken. My mom and I wouldn't get to do any of the girl things together like planning slumber parties, my first kiss... Any of that stuff. I know I have Ashton for that too, but its not the same." I turned back to him. "And then for him to keep the fact that we had an aunt from us, it's like a bitch move.
He nodded solemnly, smiling softly as he replied, "I've never had a mother to know what any of that feels like..." his words hung in the air. "And my father doesn't give a shit what I do." he gave out a small chuckle to a joke I wasn't in on.
"He's just there to throw money at the cause. We barely talk and when we do it's an argument... So no, I don't know what you're describing when you talk about your mom." he smiled briefly before slipping his phone back into his pocket.
My name was called and he stood quickly, "Allow me." he said before strolling over to the counter to get the food.
I stared at the spot he occupied before me in disbelief. Here I was complaining about someone else that had come into my life and this boy had no one at all besides my father. He returned an placed my food down in front of me before returning to his seat.
"Stop doing that..." he muttered before biting into his chicken cuban.
"Doing what?" I asked confused placing a napkin in my lap.
"Pitying me... I hate that. You have no idea how I feel about my situation." Jonah said said.
I opened my mouth to defend myself and closed it. He sounded exactly like my mother did.
"Alivia?" I heard someone call behind me.
I turned around, and wished I hadn't. I sighed heavily, "Fucking son of a - WHAT DO YOU WANT SHANNON?" I asked turning back.
He smiled smugly, "I see you moved on... and fast." he looked over at Jonah. "Hello Jonah." his blazing gray eyes staring over at Jonah.
"Gray." Jonah replied nonchalantly still munching away on his sandwich.
"Shannon what I do no longer concerns you." I replied in a low warning voice. "And no, I don't want to talk to you before you ask."
"In other words, fuck off cause you're ruining my sandwich." Jonah said.
"Excuse me?!" Shannon whispered.
"I said, FUCK OFF." Jonah repeated. "Do you have some type of hearing problem?"
"You are fucking with the wrong one Reynolds, I don't care if you are our star forward. You;ll be out on your ass." Shannon spat.
"Fuck that. I don't give a shit about any of that, besides if you had the power to do that you wouldn't be in whatever position you're in captain? Ha, whatever. No one listens to your dumbass."
Shannon growled and walked away.
Score one Reynolds - Zip Gray.
"Ugh," I said resting my head in my hands " I need a drink."
"Hmmm, I can help you with that." Jonah said continuing to munch down his sandwich.
