Crash and Burnt
Chapter 4
The final bell rang and all I could think about was the torture that was about to ensue. Not only because I was going to be riding in a small confined space with Chase, but also for the fact that hiding my nervousness about being in the car was going to be nearly impossible. He was curious about me, and when he saw how uncomfortable I was in vehicles there would be ruthless questions thrown my way.
I made my way through the crowded hallway to my puke colored locker. When I finally pushed passed several people I pulled out my combination that I had earlier written on a piece of scrap paper, and started turning the dial. I sighed in relief when it swung open with ease on the second try. Reaching up I put away my text books from the afternoon classes.
"So how was the afternoon?" I turned shocked that he had bothered to come find me.
"How did you know were my locker was?" Zander laughed and leaned against the locker that was next to mine. He was holding his headphones in his left and along with and Ipod.
"I may or may not have looked at your personal info that was attached to your schedule."
"That's a bit Stalkerish isn't it?" I couldn't help but let another small smile spread across my face.
"It may be considered stalking to some people, but I would like to call it accidental snooping." He sounded completely innocent.
"Right." I nodded pretending that what he was saying was true. "What type of music do you listen to?" his eyes followed my direction to the heap of electronics in his hand.
"The usual, some country and Jazz…but when I'm feeling really inspired I crank up some Tchaikovsky." Zander said it with such conviction that I might have believed him if it weren't for the fact that he dressed like he was into heavy metal, not classical.
I was going to question it when I felt someone gently laid a hand on my shoulder. I couldn't help but cringe slightly away from the touch, it wasn't from the pain, it was from the discomfort of someone being that close.
"You ready? You'll be late if we don't get going, parking is always a pain in the ass." I didn't bother to turn and greet him but gave a slight nod.
Confusion was evident on Zanders face but I couldn't tell him why I was going with Chase. There was no way that I would be able to handle telling him that I visited a shrink three times a week. I gave him the best smile I could muster up
"I'll see you tomorrow." I said. Zander didn't bother to reply he just turned and walked off.
"Come on." I shrugged off his hand and turned to face him.
"Don't touch me." Chase didn't object jus waited for me to start moving.
I glared once more at him the started walking towards the front doors. The moment I took a step a spasm of pain raced from my hip and I couldn't contain the small gasp of pain. It felt as if someone had jabbed a long knife into me and was laughing at my discomfort.
"Emily are you ok?" I didn't bother to reply. I needed to suck it up and get over it; thinking about the pain was only going to make it worse.
I braced myself as I took another step and this time squeezed my lips shut as another sharp jab hit. I had gotten half way down the hall before my hip spasmed and I couldn't keep myself upright. I tried to grab hold of the wall but my cast made it impossible. I felt Chases arms wrap around my waist, making me stable. It would be useless to attempt to get him to release me; I would just end up falling. This was beyond embarrassing; my first day and it already looked like I was trying to pull a move on a guy. We walked like that to his car until I pushed him off weakly and slid inside the BMW.
"We should probably get you to the doctors, I can phone my dad and tell him." I shook my head in protest
"There is no point to that Chase, I just need to sit for awhile. It will pass in a few minutes like always."
"If this happens a lot then why don't you have anything for it? It didn't seem like you have problems walking its just the pain in your hip. My moms a doctor I'm sure she could find some pills that would help." I reached into the first pocket of my purse and pulled out a small blue bottle.
"Like I said there's no point I already have prescribed drugs." He took the bottle and read the labeled taped on instructions.
"They haven't even been opened yet."
"Good observation tips." He frowned at me then back down at the bottle in his hands.
"If you have them for a purpose why aren't you taking them?" I grabbed the pills back and shoved them in the bag
"I'm sorry but last time I checked I only had one Mr. Murray as a shrink not two."
"Are you thinking that you deserve to be in this pain because of the crash?"
"You don't know what you're talking about." My voice was hard. He shook his head and shoved his key in the ignition.
"I know more than you think I do Emily. I know that you were driving when four people got killed in a collision and I know that you spent almost three months in the hospital because of your injuries." He looked up and me and pointed to my arm but his eyes were focused on my hip. "Your arm is the only injury that will ever heal properly."
"You got all that from your daddy's files did you? Maybe you should try your luck at spying; no doubt someone would want a kid who's as talented as you. Then again on second thought you seem to be excelling in your current occupation."
"I'm not employed…" My glare didn't waver from his perfectly chiseled face.
"Are you sure? Because being a jackass seems to be a fulltime job for you." Chase's laugh was bitter.
"As much as it may kill your know it all streak, I would just like to point out that I didn't get the information from my dad." No words came out of my mouth "The hospital has newspapers from lots of different states including Washington. I can't say that I would have recognized you as the winning cheer captain from nationals last year. I guess it's that smile you're missing."
He had read the article that had been posted on so many of the bulletin boards and filled the newspaper stands all around the city. The heading was still engraved in my head and I was positive I could recite the whole two page article off by heart. The writer of the piece told my whole life story in it, the school I went to and the fact I had been head cheerleader for years brining the squad to victory, and even all my relationship with all the members in the car. They had broadcasted all of this for everyone to read about.
"Why can't you just leave my business alone? I never wanted to be noticed here, I just want to be left alone." My voice was almost a whisper and I wasn't sure he had actually heard me.
"Do you really want the only person who knows what you're going through to leave you alone?" His tone was soft and convincing.
"Chase you don't have a clue what I'm going through." He could never.
"I know enough. For instance I know that right now you are freaking out about being in the car." I hadn't even realized that I was clenching the seat with my hands so tightly that my knuckles were turning white.
"You are a horrible driver." He laughed and took old of my left hand, trying to pry it off the seat. I relented and allowed him to place it on my lap.
"Chill alright? Look up." I didn't move my gaze from the floor mat. Was he trying to make me have a break down? "Look up Emily."
I moved my eyes to glare at him. Chase glanced at me and took is hand to turn my chin to face front, but before my eyes could focus on anything outside I squeezed them shut.
"If you don't open your eyes I'm going to kiss you, and you won't be able to stop me because you aren't looking." He sounded completely serious.
"You're a jerk!" as I opened my eyes I saw the buildings were I had my appointment only a few seconds away. He pulled into the lot and turned off the car.
"Hey, I got you here safe didn't I? We should probably get you up there; my dad hates it when his clients are late." I didn't bother to say anything to this, I had to pick my arguments when with him.
I got out of the car as if it were on fire and walked as fast as I could with my hip. I heard him chuckle and catch up to me in no time.
"Will you need a ride home?" I scoffed at him.
"No I'm going to need the time alone."
"But what about your hip?" He sounded genuinely worried, but I didn't want nor need his concern.
"I have been walking all around this stupid city for days now, I'm capable of getting to my aunts house." He nodded and waved me threw the doors without another word. I was thankful that he wasn't going to push it.
As we stepped in the elevator I felt the sudden urge to run away. I didn't want to have another session with Doctor Murray, there was no point to it. He knew all there was to know, so me telling him what was already obvious was a waste of both of our time.
"Must be awkward talking to a random person you don't know about your problems."
The door to the elevator door opened and I stepped out. Turning around I gave Chase a smile.
"I won't be talking to him about my problems." And before he said anything else the doors closed and the elevator went back down taking Chase with it.
