Kenny and Jess recently started to spend their school lunch breaks next to Lake Alvetta. Lake Alvetta was dark at first sight and had a slimy floor to it. Some days, the water color would change from green to brown, but at least they never found any broken glass, dirty rags, or useless auto parts in that spot.
It proved that not many people, if any, went there. Kenny and Jess would usually be surrounded by water, trees, and uncut green grass. It was quiet and peaceful, almost magical. They both dreamed of having their first time there, in the back of Kenny's pick-up truck.
"Kenny, have you thought about what you want to do after high school?" Jess asked in her southern accent.
"I don't know, I was just going to pick up where my dad left off, ya know, fixing automobiles and stuff," Kenny replied.
He had a weird way of peeling the skin off an orange; he used a spoon.
When Kenny's mama made him a lunch, she always made sure to pack an orange, whether it be with a hoagie, pasta salad, or cold pepperoni pizza. She never forgot to, just like the people of Florida never forgot that their state was known for its oranges and sunshine.
Once Kenny was finished peeling the fruit, he gave half of it to Jess, who sucked the juice out using her teeth.
"So your not leaving," she inquired, hoping that was the case, and that they could still remain in each other's lives?
Still, Jess knew that possibility didn't have much of a chance.
"Nope," Kenny agreed.
"Me neither," said Jess. She accidentally swallowed a seed.
"I couldn't help but notice you swallowed my seed," Kenny joked.
Jess punched him playfully in the arm.
"Shut up Kenny," she laughed.
"So what are you going to do?"
Jess played with her skirt. "Mamma's been nagging me about that a lot lately, trying to get me to work at some stupid ice cream shop; so I tell her what I really wanna do is be a Penthouse model."
"And she didn't like that?" he guessed.
"She said it's all a scam," Jess responded.
"I think you could. I mean, your just as pretty, if not more," Kenny commented.
"Thanks Ken." Jess hid the excitement in her voice.
When they finished eating, Kenny took a cigarette out of his jeans pocket as Jess lit it for him. The bud of the cigarette turned a hot orange as Kenny inhaled.
"Do you smoke?"
"Yea," she said.
"Here, it's my last one."
Jess held the joint in between her two fingers and sucked in a mouthful of smoke.
Kenny lied down on the quilt which was spread out in the back of his truck.
"You don't wanna go back to school, do you?" he queried.
Jess repositioned herself so that her legs were outside of Kenny's.
"I like it here," her eyes glanced down, "and I see you like it too."
They both felt themselves flush. Jess also felt the wind blow her loose ponytail and bangs around.
"You like me, don't you?" she spoke.
"Of course I do," he responded and leaned forward for there faces were just inches apart.
During their kiss, Jess took Kenny's hands and put them on her thighs. His hands went up her skirt even more as Jess slipped her tongue through his lips.
She looked at the sky as the clouds huddled together; she had a clear view of the lake. The start of a storm caused the water to ripple. She pressed her body closer to Kenny's as the day started to grow cold. Jess blinked, and when she opened her eyes she saw a person watching them.
"Hey, didn't they find you?" she called out.
