Just a little one-shot. I've had this in my head for a long time. I hope you like it, & please review! =)

Lyrics are from the song Eternal Flame by The Bangles; they don't belong to me, and I take no credit for them. Just a fitting love song, I thought.

Eternal Flame

The news. She almost never watched it. But this time, she waited for it to come on, impatience tugging at her nerves. Her heart beat, faster than ever, yearning for news, any news. As a million thoughts wound around and around in her head, she thought back to their last moments, the last time she'd seen him.

Two lone figures danced in the moonlight, their bodies perfectly in sync. Her heart beat fast, and she bit back tears, trying to be brave. His eyes shone in the sparse light, bright as ever, blue as the summer sky. Her eyes brimmed with tears, brown, sad and remorseful. There was no need for words; they both knew what the other was thinking. There was no need for music; their own melody was enough. His lips came down on hers, sweetly, gently, kissing her. His hand cupping her face tenderly, he pulled away, his thumb brushing her quivering bottom lip. She tried to smile, but it was in vain, she chose not to instead. She scanned every part of his face, his tousled blond hair, his perfect blue eyes, his straight nose, his defiant chin, his high cheekbones and his thin lips. Every part of it, she memorised. Just in case. His eyes did the same, memorising her, the smell of her, the way she looked. Just in case. Her eyes closed, briefly, and then the song, their song, softly escaped from her lips.

Close your eyes, give me your hand, darling
Do you feel my heart beating, do you understand?
Do you feel the same, am I only dreaming?
Is this burning an eternal flame?

Sadly, he looked at her, and then began singing his part of the song.

I believe it's meant to be, darling
I watch when you are sleeping, you belong to me
Do you feel the same, am I only dreaming
Or is this burning an eternal flame?

She joined in, their voices melting together, forming one harmony, so full of emotion and terrible sadness it would have struck any stranger walking by.

Say my name, sun shines through the rain
A whole life so lonely, and then you come and ease the pain
I don't want to lose this feeling

Close your eyes and give me your hand
Do you feel my heart beating, do you understand?
Do you feel the same, am I only dreaming
Or is this burning an eternal flame?

Is this burning an eternal flame?
An eternal flame?

Close your eyes and give me your hand
Do you feel my heart beating, do you understand?
Do you feel the same, am I only dreaming
Or is this burning an eternal flame?

All the while her eyes never left his. They stopped, and this time a lone tear fell down her cheek. He wiped it away, as if she was the most fragile thing in the world. But the barrier was broken. The tears tumbled down her cheeks, overflowing, and her vision blurred. He couldn't stand it, and a pained expression came across his face. His arms pulled her closer, into an embrace. Her face buried in his neck, and his arms enveloping her, he comforted her. Their bodies fit together perfectly, and he grimaced at her every heart wrenched sob, as if each one gave him physical pain. She tried to regain her composure, and pulled away from him slightly, to look into his eyes, and started to open her mouth to say sorry, but he quietened her with a glance. She understood. Tonight is not for words, they seemed to agree. He wiped away the last of her tears, as she immersed herself into his eyes. The thoughts that passed between them made up for a lifetime of words, and he patted her stomach, where a bulge was already beginning to show. He smiled, sadly; hoping, dreaming, wondering. Her smile was the same as his; but she felt an ethereal feeling, as if her world was about to end. He understood, and gave her a look that simply said: Don't give up, never give up. She nodded in response, wondering how she would survive. In the distance, their was the sound of cars, and the city, but at that moment, both were oblivious to anything but each other. She kissed him impulsively, conveying all her words, all her feelings, all her hopes and dreams, into that one kiss and he kissed back with the same passion, the same intensity, and they both understood one another. They broke apart reluctantly, and then knowing that it was time, headed back to the car, holding hands, not needing more contact than that to express everything that needed to be said.

She snapped out of the reverie, hastily wiping away the tear that had escaped. She tuned in, listening intently to the woman on the television screen. Death and destruction, death and destruction. Everything said was depressing, no cheerfulness at all. But then she listened properly. Her body went numb. It couldn't be. It wasn't possible. Her numb mind struggled to register what had just happened. There was no news of them- nothing at all. Why? Her anguish seemed to be tearing away at her, insanity creeping in. What was the point of all this? She searched to find something, someone to blame. It was the country's fault, the government, the stupid President. Men and their stupidity, that was what to blame. She cried then. Cried until there were no tears left inside of her. She heard another wailing, and wiped away her own tears to console her small daughter, barely a month old. She fed her, trying not to let the sobs escape. Her surroundings felt alien to her; an ache inside of her body so terrible and desperate she wanted to scream. The doorbell rang then, and she composed herself before putting her infant daughter back in her crib, and walking, to the door. She opened it, and almost could not believe who was standing on the doorstep. A strangled cry escaped from her lips.

"Jen, I'm back," He said, his deep voice still familiar. His face recognisably the face she'd memorised.

"Daniel!" She cried, launching herself into his arms. He smelt the same, and she inhaled deeply, a smile on her lips, the ache within her gone. He was back. He was alive! Because their love was like an eternal flame. It never went out.
