She listened to his voice emitting from the speaker on her phone. It was the same voice she heard every day. It was the same voice she fell in love with several months ago.

She held the phone in her left hand as she walked across the street, her right hand stuck in her coat pocket. The sun shone through the tree branches, making the snow and ice glitter on the sidewalk.

"Sweetie, how was your day?"

She smiled, "Same as usual. Nothing terribly exciting."

A chuckle came through the speaker. "Sounds wonderful."

"Oh, yes, absolutely wonderful." She readjusted her crimson hat, covering up her ears. Why didn't she bring the scarf? "How was yours?"

"Eh. Video games and internet. No school or work, so..." She imagined his involuntary shrug, giggling at the thought.

"What?" He asked, sounding jokingly offended.

"Nothing, nothing." She shook her head. It was getting cold, she thought as she zipped up her jacket.

A small silence pervaded as she continued down the sidewalk. She slipped slightly on the ice, catching herself before doing any serious injury.

"So, how was your day?"

"You already asked that," she replied.

"Oh? Did I?" he chuckled.

"Yes, a few minutes ago." A small snowflake fell onto the sidewalk before her. She paused as she looked at it for a few moments.

"Oh. Sorry." She heard some shuffling on the other side as he repositioned himself in front of the computer. "I really do want to come visit you."

"I know. I would really like you to as well."

The conversation continued, short pauses here and there. She laughed and giggled when it was appropriate. She joked with him about what she would do if he made it up here.

She stared up at the sky as the snow started falling faster. Extended a red glove, she caught several large flakes in her palm. She took off her hat, letting the snowflakes fall on her hair. It was so beautiful, the flurries turning the whole sky white.

She listened to him talk about his day. They hadn't missed a day, the phone conversations. They had always found a time to talk, even if they were really busy. Well, when she was really busy.

He was sweet and adorable. They always joked about when he would get up here. Not because it was funny, but because it wasn't going to happen. He didn't know it. But she did. She knew.

"Hello?"

"Huh? Sorry...I almost slipped." She didn't. She hadn't.

"Oh. No worries." She could picture his smile. So predictable...and gullible, the poor fool.

"I'm sorry, darling. I 'm back at my dorm. I really should go do homework. I'll talk to you later." She was nowhere near her dorm.

"Aw...all right. I'll talk to you later."

"Sure." She put a smile on her face, as if he could see it from the other side. "Bye."

"I love you."

She replied absentmindedly, "I love you too."

She shut her phone, letting it close with a resounding snap. The snow drifted around her, landing on her long red coat.

And as the snow accumulated on the ground, she realized that she didn't love him anymore.
