October 17, 2003
Cameron was sitting in the living room of his house reading one of the books he'd gotten for his ninth birthday yesterday, when he heard a crash coming from his older sister's room. He closed his book and walked over to her room. When he got there he saw that her door was open, so he peeked in. He was slightly confused when he first looked in, because it looked like his sister had thrown her phone against the wall, causing the pictures hanging there to fall too.
"What do you want Cameron?" Mackenzie said, having noticed her little brother at the door.
"I heard the crash," Cameron explained, stepping into her room and looking over at the glass all over the floor.
"Oh," Mackenzie muttered, also looking over at the broken frames.
"Are you okay Kenzie?" Cameron asked. Mackenzie was normally pretty calm, and the fact that she had thrown her phone against the wall worried him.
"I'm fine," Mackenzie muttered, "Just go back in the living room and read your book."
"Okay," Cameron said. He turned to walk back to the living room but stopped and walked back to her room saying, "Does this have to do with church?"
"What do you mean?" Mackenzie asked, already picking up the bigger pieces of glass.
"Last night you were talking on the phone and you said something about God's Chosen People or something, and you sounded angry," Cameron said, thinking back to last night when he'd gone to get a glass of water and heard his sister talking.
Mackenzie stopped picking up the glass and walked over to Cameron, kneeling in front of him, fear in her eyes. "I want you to forget you ever heard me say anything about God's Chosen People. Do you understand? I want you to act like they don't exist. Don't mention them to anyone. Ever. Okay?"
Cameron nodded, looking at his sister in confusion. He had never seen her react this way to anything before and it scared him. "I promise I'll never mention it again."
"Good," Mackenzie said, standing back up. "Could you go get a vacuum for me please? I need to get rid of this mess before mom sees it."
Cameron nodded and went to get the vacuum, still trying to understand what had his sister so upset.
