The Last Protector

By: order out of chaos

I was expecting my first year of college to be fun and exciting. I was looking forward to meeting new people, trying new things, and seeing new places. I wanted to study abroad for awhile in Europe and finally put my four years of high school French classes to good use. I wanted to work on my art and maybe, hopefully, find a really great writer that I could work with to create a manga-style comic book. (That's been my dream since I first became an anime and manga fanatic at the tender young age of fourteen.) Hell, I was even looking forward to living in a tiny, cramped dorm room! I mean, for the first time in my life, I'd be away from my parents. I could practically taste the freedom I'd soon be experiencing. (It tasted like cotton candy.)

You know what I wasn't expecting? To be hanging upside down by my ankles from the ceiling of a dank, smelly little cave in a tiny pocket dimension of space and time separate from my own.

Yeah, if anyone had told me that was gonna happen I would've laughed until my sides split and then asked them what the hell they were snorting.

But that's where I was. Dangling from the ceiling of a cave covered with archaic red symbols whose meaning I couldn't even comprehend, but which looked incredibly scary and practically radiated off evil. There was also wet shiny stuff dripping down the walls. My surroundings were too dark to see it clearly, but I had a nagging feeling that it was blood.

And of course there was the succubus sitting not two feet away, staring unblinkingly at me with burning, molten white eyes. If I were in a movie or an anime cartoon, this would be the part where I'd yell "You'll never win!" in a brave and heroic manner. Then I'd cut myself free and fight my way out in a cool, slow-mo action scene.

But this was real life, and I'm just an ordinary girl, so all I could do was hang there, the blood rushing to my head and the succubus' ample chest sticking right into my face. I was swaying back and forth slightly like a human pendulum, and my T-shirt was riding up and getting really itchy. Needless to say, I was not a happy camper. But I was bound to the ceiling with chains that were reinforced with glowing black demonic energy. Unless I suddenly and miraculously gained magical abilities of my own, I had no way of freeing myself.

"She's not coming for you, you know," the succubus said, baring her pointed black teeth in an evil smirk.

I knew, all right. The knowledge that I was going to die here was the source of the current horrible sinking feeling in my gut. Alex couldn't risk coming to this place and trying to free me. There was too great a chance that the demonic hordes could attack and kill her here, then use her blood to rip open a portal to Earth.

Not even my darkest imaginings had me meeting a horrible and bloody end at the hands of a vengeful demoness. But if my sacrifice earned Alex and Cerali even a precious few extra minutes, then I knew it would not have been in vain.

"I've waited long enough," the succubus sighed in annoyance. "Let's see if humans bleed the same as Protectors do."

She swung her sharp black claws at my chest, preparing to rip through the soft flesh there, and I closed my eyes and braced myself for the end.

Author's Note: This is my first story here on FictionPress, and my first attempt at original fiction in several years. Please don't be too harsh if you should decide to review (something I would very much appreciate.)

Much thanks to my friend Sara for allowing me to use her nickname and personality as a base for the original character Cerali.
