The Call

Irina Samuels

The call is different

For all who hear it

For mothers, the call is the sound of parenthood.

For mothers, it's the sound of a newborn baby crying

And rising, with a groan

To slowly lull the child to sleep again.

It's the sight of their own little girl or boy

Screeching with laughter on the playground.

It's the sound of an adolescent slamming the door.

The shout, "You've ruined my life!" is the minor key in the harmony of the Call.

Then, there are the wedding bells.

The last echo of the Call that a mother will hear.

The call is different

For all who hear it.

For mothers,

The last echo

Is the peal of that last wedding bell.
