MORGAN POINT OF VIEW
There were voices. I wanted nothing more than to yell, tell all of the voices to stop so I could get some sleep. But a voice spoke, a voice I recognized.
"I didnt know!'
Know? Who was that? I kept my eyes closed, not really sure I wanted to let them know I was awake. How did I know that voice?
"Well, of course you didnt know!" Kate snapped back, making me feel bad for whoever she was talking to. I thought I was the only one she spoke to like that. "Considering you left her!"
Wait, what?
"I just- I didnt-" The deep voice stuttered.
"What? You didnt what? Didnt think? What the hell were you-"
"Maybe you should have this discussion somewhere else." Another voice broke in. It was a high pitched voice, and it took me only a moment to realize it was the same voice that talked of meeting me earlier that night. "She looks exhausted. You dont need to wake her."
There was silence for a moment, then I hears shuffling and my door being shut softly. Then I heard my sisters muffled voice coming through the door. "I know you're awake." The high pitched voice said right by my head.
I squeaked, my eyes flying open. "Shh!" The girl said frantically, looking toward the door. "You dont want them knowing you're awake. Not until you're prepared."
"Prepared?" I asked, making sure to keep my voice low.
The girl nodded, causing her dark red hair to fly in front of her face. She pushed it back impatiently, staring at me through hazel eyes. "We were worried when you didnt show up. So, Kate called your cell phone, we followed the music in here. Anyway, Seth walked in with us, and he just kind of stared at you. Then he just sat down in your chair and started asking these questioned. He looked sick or something-"
I held up my hand, signaling a break in the girls speech. God, she hadn't even taken a breath! "Who's Seth?"
The girl rolled her eyes, clearly telling me to keep up. "He's in our group in psychology. And, apparently, your baby's father."
I froze, my breath leaving me completely. Father? Baby? The mystery guy was in Kate's class? He was here, in my apartment? He knew?
"You look like you're going to throw up." The girl told me frantically, bouncing from on foot to the other as she stared at me. "Or pass out. Should I get Kate?"
"No!" I said, a little more forcefully than I meant.
She froze, then shrugged. "Okay." She held out her hand, a huge smile on her face. "I'm Jessie, by the way."
I gave her a shaky smile, still not sure what to do with the information that my mystery guy was standing in my living room. And the fact that he knew about the baby. Slowly, I grabbed the girls hand. "Morgan."
She giggled. "I know, silly." She dropped my hand, then plopped down on the floor, sitting crossed legged and staring at me expectantly. I slowly sat on my bed, my body facing her. "So, Kate was saying that you guys needed to find a bigger apartment. I actually have a solution about that. I just wanted to meet you first to make sure it would all work out, but after seeing you I just know that we'll be the best of friends."
I felt my eyebrows shoot up. "Oh?" Was this girl nuts?
She nodded frantically. "My parents died two years ago."
I instantly shot her a sympathetic look, knowing how much it hurt to loose your parents, but she waived her hand. "It wasnt like you and Kate. My parents were never home, I lived with a babysitter most of the time. I saw them like once a month. Maybe. Anyway," She said, obviously done with the topic of her parents, "when they died, I got the house. I paid it off with the insurance money. The only thing that needs paid is the utilities, and I think we can cover that."
"We?" I questioned, intrigued.
"My house is big." Jessie said bluntly. "I've been wanting roommates for ages, but I haven't found anyone I like enough. I think you, Kate, and the baby would be great addition. We can just split up the utilities each month. Pay for your own food and such. But thats less than paying rent, right?"
I nodded. Maybe this girl really was crazy, offering to let two people she barely knew move into her house. Especially since one of them was a pregnant teenager.
"So, you'll do it?" Jessie asked eagerly, jumping to her feet.
"Uh, Its really up to Kate-"
"She'll agree." Jessie said, like she already knew it was going to happen. She reached over, hugging me tightly against her. "We'll have so much fun! And we can go shopping for the baby, and we can decorate a nursery, and you and I will be the best of friends-"
"Jessie, what are you doing to my sister?" Kate's startled voice came from the doorway.
Jessie's arms dropped instantly, but only so she could launch herself at my sister. "We're going to be roommates!" She squealed.
Kate glared at me over Jessie's head. "We are?"
"Yep!" Jessie said, nodding like crazy. She suddenly let go of Kate, taking a huge step back. "But you and I can talk about that while Seth and Morgan talk in here!"
"I dont think thats such a good idea-" Kate started.
"I do." I heard mystery guy-Seth- say from behind her. There was silence for a moment, then Kate finally looked at me, asking me what to do. I silently nodded, letting her know I was fine. Kate let out a deep sigh, then let Jessie drag her out of the doorway and down the hall.
And then he was there. The same messy hair, the dark blue eyes. The eyes I had dreamed of for months. The eyes that were currently fixed on me intently.
"Hi." I managed to whisper, looking away from him and fixing my eyes on the floor in front of me, a hot blush on my cheeks.
"Hi." He said back, his voice just as low as mine. I heard him walk forward, then the squeak from my desk chair as he sat. There was silence for a moment, then he let out a sigh. "This is awkward."
"Just a little." I muttered back.
Seth let out a soft laugh, then sighed once again as he sat further back in the chair. "I tried to find you." He told me bluntly, like he couldn't get the words out fast enough. "I asked my brother, and his friends. None of them had a clue who you were."
"Your brother?" I questioned, confused.
His dark eyes twinkled as he looked at me. There was a small smirk on his face. "Jake? Jake Elliot? The guy whos party you went to that night?"
I blushed brightly. "I didnt actually know him. I just went with my boy- ex-boyfriend."
Seth's eyes flashed at the mention of Nate, but he just chuckled. "I figured that much out when I asked him. He had no clue who you were. It probably didnt help that I didnt have a name." He said, shooting me a pointed look.
"I didnt have your either." I retorted, crossing my arms over my chest. "And if you wanted to see me again, why did you leave in the first place?"
He winced. "Actually, I was only home that night to pick up some boxes I had left there. I didnt expect to find my little brother throwing a party. I just drank a few beers, and things went from there. I was supposed to meet my landlord at eight. I woke up at eight-thirty. I didnt even have the time to leave a note. I asked Jake to tell you that. I found out later that he was so hung over he didnt even remember."
"Oh." I said, completely confused. It certainly had sounded like he had tried to find me. And I had tried to find him. But, why? I mean, was it because he liked me? Or because I had been willing to have sex with him? And what about now? I mean, I'm pregnant with his baby! That has to change something.
"What did Jessie mean when she said you were going to be roommates?" Seth asked bluntly. I was starting to realize he didnt have a mental filter. Now that I thought back, he hadn't had one that night either- but I had just thought it was because of the alcohol. Apparently not.
I quickly summarized what Jessie had told me. Seth looked like he was contemplating something for a moment, then just gave me a nod. "You know I want to be there, right?" He asked me, sitting forward suddenly.
"You do?" I asked him, my heart jumping around like crazy.
He nodded, his eyes locked on mine. "For everything. Doctor's appointments, the birth, first words. All of it."
I swallowed hard. What did that mean? "Well, I guess we'll be seeing a lot of each other than, wont we?" I asked, my voice soft.
He nodded slowly, a small smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. "If you'll let me."
I nodded, not even thinking about it.
"Good." He said, his voice barely a whisper. He cleared his throat, shooting me a crooked grin. "Well then, I guess we should learn some things about each other if we're going to spend all this time together, shouldnt we?"
I blushed brightly, thinking that he already knew a part of me no one else did. I heard him chuckle. "Ah, do I want to know what youre thinking?" He teased, making me blush even more.
"What's your favorite color?" I asked, trying to get the subject off of me.
The look he shot me let me know he knew exactly what I was trying to do. "Blue. Yours?"
"Green." I replied. "Food?"
He shrugged. "I dont know. I hate carrots. And onions. But everything else is fine. Favorite animal?"
"Cat. Favorite book?"
"The Two Towers. What's yours?"
"The Other Boleyn Girl." I replied, blushing slightly as I thought of the contents inside the book. Seth grinned. "Movie?"
He shook his head. "To many to choose from. Yours?"
"Cruel Intentions." I said, biting my lip as I blushed yet again. Seth laughed out loud this time.
"You really enjoy reading and watching about sex, huh?"
"I'm not answering that." I muttered. "What about your family?"
"My brother is a senior." He replied, shooting me yet another amused look. "Mom is an interior designer. Dad's an architect. Are you planning on going to college?"
I nodded. "I have a full scholarship here."
He smiled at me. "Thats great." He must have seen my worried look, or maybe he saw the way my hand shot to rest on my stomach. Either way, his smile faded, replaced by a serious look. "Dont worry about that. We can work our schedules out so one of us is with him at all times."
Now it was my turn to send him an amused look. "Him?'
He shrugged, smiling at me yet again. "Just a guess. What do you want to study?"
"English." I replied instantly. "What are you studying?"
"I want to be an architect." He said, rolling his eyes when I laughed. "I know, like father like son." He said, once again looking at my stomach. There was silence for a moment, then he laughed lowly. "You know, my dad and mom met at a party when they were twenty. They ended upwell, I was born nine months later."
I stared at him, wide eyed. "So- you"
"My mom didnt even tell my dad. He found out two years later when they ran into each other at a mutual friends." He laughed. "You know, the ended up having Jake before they were married? But everything worked out for them."
His eyes moved from my stomach, instead coming to rest on mine. I swallowed hard at the odd feeling in the pit of my stomach. "Maybe it will for us too." He whispered.
