Safe With Me
Summary: Amelia West has a secret: she can read minds. It's an ability that brings her into contact with a multi-pierced, tattooed boy named Mitch Cooper.
Have you ever been asked, "If you could have any superpower, what would it be?"?
Of course you have. Everyone's been asked that at least once in their lifetime. Answer me this, though: when asked that question, has your answer ever been, "I'd love to be able to read minds!"?
If so, then you, my friend, are a complete idiot.
Of all the superpowers you could possibly hypothetically have, you want to be able to read minds? Really? Come on! What about Teleportation? Flight? Telekinesis? Invisibility for crying out loud! They are so much better and far more "super" powers to have than being able to read minds.
Believe me, I know - I'm a mind reader.
Yes, an honest-to-God, actual mind reader much like Edward "I'm so shiny" Cullen and Sookie "I love vampires" Stackhouse. Except without all the vampires and werewolves. Aside from the anomaly that is yours truly, my life is very much normal. Bordering on mundane, truth be told. Plus I am a heck of a lot cooler and way less whiny than those two.
Getting back to my point, trust me when I say that being a mind reader isn't all it's cracked up to be. Sure, it sounds good in theory. I mean, you could cheat on all your school tests and get straight As, and teachers and students would be none the wiser. Not that I condone such action, of course. Nor have I ever done that myself. Well, maybe once. Or twice.
Um, what was I saying? Oh, right. In theory, it sounds like it'd be a pretty awesome power to have. You could make a lot of money off of it. You could join the C.I.A. or F.B.I. or something equally as cool and help bag the bad guys (human lie detector, anyone?). Point is, there are a multitude of things and situations in which being able to read minds could be a handy trick to have.
But what the fine print doesn't tell you is that in reality, being a mind reader isn't always fun. For the most part, it's tiring and highly likely to drive you insane. You try thinking something while there are other people's thoughts clogging up your head. Besides, most people have either really boring, disgusting or cringe-worthy thoughts that if you were a mind reader, you'd give an arm and leg not to be one anymore.
Don't believe me? Let's see...
Okay. At this very minute, I can tell you that exactly six guys in my vicinity are thinking about sex. Three of them are thinking about sex with the same girl, one is thinking about the sex they had last night and how atrocious it was (the girl's fault, according to him), and two are wishing they could have sex right this second; they're that horny.
That saying that guys are pigs? I can one-hundred percent attest to that. They really are pigs. If they're not thinking about sex, they're thinking about how long they can go without showering before they start to smell, or how many cheeseburgers they can inhale in two minutes, or how loud a fart they can release.
I know, right? Charming. The lot of them.
There are those rare occasions where I come across a guy who actually has an intelligent thought floating around in his head, but mostly, I'm surrounded by horny Neanderthals who smell. It'd be okay if I didn't know what these horny, smelly Neanderthals were thinking all the time, but alas. I mean, I'd probably still be grossed out by the majority of them, but I wouldn't be as grossed out as I am, you know?
The girls aren't as bad. They mostly think about clothes and shopping and make-up and who's the hottest guy in school and whether or not they're putting on weight. They do a lot of mental bitching about one another, too. Luckily for me, I keep my head down and avoid attention so much that I don't even register on their radar. Believe me, there's nothing worse than hearing someone bitch about you. Especially if, outwardly, they always act nice and friendly to you. It does not make for good self-esteem. Then again, neither does having the ability to hear people's thoughts.
On the other hand, there are instances where I'm grateful for having my special little ability. If I'm in class and am concentrating hard on not listening in on other people's thoughts, I sometimes forget to listen to what my teacher's saying, and that makes for an embarrassing situation when said teacher calls on me for an answer to something. I can't tell you how many times that's happened to me, nor how many times my mind reading as gotten me out of it.
And then there are the times when I really, really, really wish God or whoever the hell it is up there had decided to give my ability to someone else because it really wasn't doing me any favours. Like right now, for example. There I was, minding my own business while I rummaged through my locker getting my books for fourth and fifth period, when out of nowhere, a stray thought entered my mind. It wasn't just anyone's stray thought, either. No, this one belonged to a particularly nasty piece of work named Harmony Jacobs. Harmony Jacobs likes to think she's the shit, but really, she's a big fat moron who desperately needs to lay off the hair-dying. I can't actually remember what her natural hair colour is, come to think of it.
Anyway, so while I was getting my things out of my locker, Harmony must have walked past me, and I must have been concentrating too hard on finding my Math textbook, because the next thing I know, her voice is filling my head.
...Mitch Cooper is going to pay. That little bastard thinks he can get away with fooling around with me on Saturday night and then fooling around with Melanie on Sunday night? I don't think so. Not only am I going to key that shithead's car, but I'm going to slash the tyres and smash the windows, too...
Like I said, she's a nasty piece of work. I waited until I knew she'd turned the corner and disappeared before I turned around to stare after her.
It was then my conscious decided to rear its sometimes ugly head. I really didn't want to get involved in the situation, but a small part of me knew telling Mitch Cooper what Harmony had planned was the right thing to do. It didn't matter that I couldn't exactly tell him how I knew; he deserved to know. Aside from the partying and tardiness, Mitch Cooper wasn't a bad guy. He'd always been nice to me. The two times he acknowledged my existence, that is.
What can I say? We don't really run in the same circles.
Five minutes pass before I realise that I've been standing by my locker staring off into space and thinking. The bell has already rung - I heard it and subconsciously acknowledged its meaning - and no one else is in the corridor. Not wanting to run into a teacher, I slam my locker door shut and head for the study hall. My fourth and fifth periods are free periods, and I have a lot of Math homework to catch up on - numbers and I have a volatile relationship; at best. However, as I near the study hall, I find that instead of taking me into the hall, my feet take me right by the door, around the next corner, down the corridor, and out the main doors of the building. I know where my feet are taking me, I don't like that my feet are taking me there, but unfortunately for me, my feet and my conscious appear to be against me today.
Damn them.
It is common knowledge that Mitch and his friends like to hang out under an oak tree right by the student parking lot before school, after school, and during their free periods. I can see them clearly as I reluctantly approach the group. Mitch is sitting cross-legged on the ground, a guitar cradled in his lap as he strums a few random notes. When I'm about six feet away from them, I clear my throat nervously and say, "Uh, Mitch, can I talk to you for a second?"
Looking up, Mitch's eyes meet mine. While my eyes are a particularly nice shade of blue (if I do say so myself), Mitch's are a stormy grey, and never fail to intimidate me. His eyebrows are drawn together as he looks me over slowly.
"Uh, you kinda are already," he replies. I resist the urge to roll my eyes.
"Privately, is what I meant."
"What are you going to do, ask him out?" Adam Miller, Mitch's best friend, asks me, a smile touching his lips. "'Cos I can already tell you his answer's going to be no."
I glare at Adam. I never have liked him much. "I'm not going to ask him out," I all but snap. Not only are the guys in this school pigs, but they're also incredibly annoying. And arrogant, apparently. Turning my attention back to Mitch, I raise my eyebrows to tell him that I'm waiting.
Mitch leans back to look me over again. Then, laying his guitar down on the ground beside him, he stands up slowly. As he walks over to me, I turn and lead us away from his friends. Don't want them eavesdropping on us, after all.
"Um, I just wanted to tell you that I... overheard-" it's not a complete lie "-Harmony Jacobs saying that she's going to key your car this afternoon."
The look on his face is priceless. His mouth fell open slightly, and his frown deepened. "What?"
"She's also going to slash your car's tyres and smash its windows."
"WHAT?"
"Yeah," I nod, looking at anything but him. "So, just thought you should know." And with that, I turn on my heel and walk away, not bothering to look back.
Now, being the kind of girl that I am - the sometimes naive girl who believes that once you've accomplished something you've set out to do, that's the end of it - I honestly thought that that was going to be the end of it. I did my good deed for the month, and when I walked away from Mitch, I mentally washed my hands clean of any and all involvement with Mitch, Harmony, and Mitch's stupid car.
Oh, how wrong I was.
The next day, after being forced to embarrass myself in front of my Math class by way of completing sums on the board - sums I had no hope of ever knowing how to complete properly and correctly - I stop by my locker to check that I don't have any homework due for my next class. I can be a little absentminded sometimes; one of the downfalls of being able to read minds. When I have finished checking my Biology book to make sure I hadn't scribbled down a note about homework, I shut my locker door and turn around, eliciting a rather loud and girlish shriek as I do so.
"Jesus, Mary, and Joseph!" I breathe, placing a hand over my racing heart. "Way to give me a heart attack."
Have you guessed who's standing in front of me? That's right, none other than Mitch Cooper. Ordinarily, this would be cause for blushing and "OH MY GOD, OH MY GOD"ding - Mitch Cooper doesn't talk to just anybody - but I am not ordinary and this was not an ordinary situation.
"Uh, hi Mitch. Did you want something?" I ask nervously. Of course he wants something. He wouldn't just come up and talk to me for the hell of it.
"How did you know Harmony was going to key my car yesterday?"
No time for chit-chat, I see.
"I told you - I overheard her talking about it."
Mitch smiles in a way that I don't like. "Only, she didn't. She was actually pretty surprised to see me standing by my car waiting for her."
I swallow a little nervously. "Oh, really?"
He gives me that same I-know-something-you-don't-know smile. "Wanna know why?" he asks.
Not really, no. "Uh, okay."
"See, Harmony knew I had detention after school yesterday - a paintball prank went awry last week" he says with a grin "so I have detention for two weeks - which is why she purposely didn't tell anyone that she was planning to key my car. She knew that if she told anyone, word would have eventually gotten back to me, and I would have skipped my detention to prevent her from keying my car."
Huh. Who knew Harmony Jacobs had the capacity to be clever? I sure didn't.
"So," Mitch was saying, "what I'm wondering is, if she didn't tell anyone, then how did you know what she was going to do well ahead of when she was going to do it?"
"Did it ever occur to you that she could be lying?"
Mitch shakes his head confidently. "No, she wasn't lying."
"Well... how can you be so sure?"
"Harmony takes pleasure in telling the truth one-hundred percent of the time. Besides, I've known Harmony her whole life; I know when she's lying."
Okay then.
"I don't know you, though," Mitch says slowly. "I mean, I know you're Amelia West and that you sit in front of me in English, but beyond that, I don't know anything about you."
Mitch Cooper knows who I am? Mitch Cooper knows who I am? Did I just get transported to a parallel universe without my knowledge?
"So I asked around about you-"
Uh oh.
"-and turns out, not many people know much about you, but they seem to think there's something a little off about you."
"...I'm not really sure how I'm supposed to take that," I tell him honestly.
"There have been rumours, in the past, about you."
Wonderful. The Rumours. Never thought I'd have to deal with them ever again. They were your run of the mill rumours – spent time in a juvenile detention centre, murdered my parents, and so on and so forth.
I roll my eyes and look away from Mitch. "Gee, tell me something I don't know. I know all about them, Mitch, and they're all crap."
"Even the one about you being a witch?"
Honestly. I shake my head and roll my eyes. "Yes, even the one about me being a witch."
"Okay, then how did you know Harmony was going to key my car? What, did you read her mind or something?" he asks, laughing.
"WHAT? No! Of course I didn't read her mind! Are you insane?"
WHAT are you doing, Amelia? Stop giving yourself away!
"Reading minds? Pft. As if such a thing even exists!"
Oh my God, why don't you just stick a flashing neon sign to your forehead that says, "I'm a mind reader"?
I'm laughing hysterically now, and Mitch is looking at me like I've grown another head. "Nice one, Mitch. I'm going to have to tell that one to the next person I run into!"
It's then I notice that Mitch is frowning and his eyes have gotten wider. Ah crap! Before he can say anything, I backpedal away from him, calling out, "Okay, got to get class. Nice talking to you. See ya!"
I sprint to my next class, turning up to the Biology Lab. huffing and puffing. I get weird looks from the teacher and students alike, and when I sit down at my allocated bench, my lab. partner actually moves a few inches away from me. Nice. I spend the next hour tuning out my monotonous teacher and instead spend it thinking about what a complete and utter idiot I am to have practically given away my big secret.
While I mentally berated myself for my idiocy, I briefly hoped that Mitch would just think I was a big weirdo and leave it at that. After all, I did end up laughing hysterically at him - who wouldn't think I was a complete weirdo? However, a small part of me had an inkling that my involvement with Mitch, Harmony, and Mitch's stupid car wasn't quite over yet.
Oh, how right I was.
I managed to avoid running into Mitch over the next two days - skilfully avoid, I might add - but on the third day, I wasn't so lucky. He caught up with me in the library. Of all places.
The librarian at my school is a stickler for the No Talking policy. He will send a death glare (or five) your way if you even breathe loudly. So, for my free second period, I figured the safest place I could hide out in was the library. Even if Mitch managed to catch up with me in there, there was no way that Mr. Paulson would allow him to stay if he broke the No Talking policy.
Mitch popped up while I was in the middle of reading a passage about ancient Chinese torture techniques. What can I say? I was bored, and had no real reason to be in the library. Other than hiding from Mitch, that is.
"Chinese torture techniques, huh?" he whispers over my shoulder.
I jump about a foot in the air. "Sweet Jesus, don't you ever not sneak up on people?"
"I've come to like sneaking up on you." He smiles at me and for the first time, I notice he has dimples. "You've been avoiding me," he adds, moving to stand beside me. He places his elbow on one of the shelves of the bookcase I'm standing beside, and then leans his body against it.
"Don't flatter yourself," I mutter, slamming the book shut and putting it back on the shelf.
"It's true. You have been avoiding me."
I ignore him as I scan the titles of the other books in the same bookshelf.
"I wonder why, though," Mitch ponders out loud. "Possibly because you don't want me to know that you actually can read minds?"
I was expecting that so when he says it out loud, I don't react.
All the while, however, my heart is racing. Mitch Cooper cannot know my secret. He's likely to tell everyone he knows, and he knows pretty much everyone in the school.
"You can, can't you?" he asks, leaning over to peer into my eyes.
"I can what?"
"Read minds."
"Like I told you the other day, Mitch, there is no such thing as being able to read minds. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have..."
Before I can finish my sentence, however, Mitch's thoughts explode into my head.
Amelia West has a fiiiiiine body. I wouldn't mind seeing what she has hidden underneath all those clothes. I bet she's real good in the sack, too. It's always the quiet, weird ones that are the best in bed. All that pent up energy they have. She could probably go for a couple of hours without getting tired. And those legs would probably wind around me like a...
I couldn't take it anymore. Slapping my hands over my ears - like that would actually prevent me hearing his thoughts - I squeezed my eyes shut and shook my head. "Stop it!" I hiss, opening my eyes and glaring at him. "Just stop it! Fine, okay, yes I can read minds. Are you happy now?"
Turning my back on him, I close my eyes again, calm my breathing, and shut my mind down. When his thoughts are no longer floating around inside my head, I turn around.
"Feel better?" I ask rudely.
"I knew it!" he says excitedly. "When you started acting all weird after I jokingly asked if you'd read Harmony's mind, I knew it was true."
"Well good for you," I snap. "Will you leave me alone now?"
"Hell no! Do you know how awesome it is to be able to read minds?"
I stare at him in disbelief. "Awesome? Are you kidding me?"
He frowns. "No, of course not. Being able to hear what people are thinking? You'd know everyone's deepest and darkest secrets! That's pretty cool."
"Yeah, only the majority of people don't walk around thinking about their deepest, darkest secrets."
"Oh. What do they think about then?"
"The people at school? Really boring stuff."
"Like?"
I scrunch up my nose while I think. "'Oh, Eli Carter is so hot!'" I say, imitating Harmony Jacobs' voice - she'd been the one thinking it when I heard it. "Or 'I wish Mitch Cooper would ask me out!'"
Mitch jumps on that. "Who wishes I'd ask them out?"
I roll my eyes. "I don't know. It's not like the thoughts come with a name tag, you know. Unless I'm alone with someone, I have no idea which thoughts belong to whom."
Mitch is nodding his head, so I continue. "And that's just the girls. The guys in this school are pigs. All they think about is sex and food."
"I bet it was Renee Smith."
"What?"
"The one who wants me to ask them out."
"Right, whatever."
Mitch smiles slowly. "Yeah, she's been giving me the eye all week."
Whatever that means. "Look, Mitch, you can't tell anyone about this, okay?"
"I don't really like Renee all that much. She's cute, but she's boring."
"Mitch, listen to me!" I hiss, snapping my fingers in front of his face. "You cannot tell anyone about this, okay?"
Before he can answer me, Mr. Paulson pops up behind me and says, rather lividly, "There is absolutely NO talking while in the library! Mr. Cooper, you are supposed to be in History right now. Miss West, either work in here quietly or go to Study Hall." When neither of us move, Mr. Paulson glares and says, "NOW!"
I hightail it back to the desk I left my books on while Mitch casually ambles out of the library, winking at me as he does so.
Great. Mitch Cooper is walking around with the biggest secret anyone has ever had to keep. On the one hand, I'm annoyed that Mitch was able to trick me into giving my secret up so easily. On the other hand, I'm relieved that someone else knows my secret. Back to the first hand, though, I'm nervous knowing that it's Mitch who knows. There's no telling what he'll do with what he knows. He could hand out flyers about it. He could call the police and turn me in, making me their human lie detector. Unlike me, Mitch isn't at all predictable. I'm just going to have to wait and see what he does.
Turns out, I didn't have to wait long.
That night, as I'm sitting at my desk cursing the invention and existence of Mathematics, I hear a quiet tap on my window. Thinking the wind is just blowing the tree against the glass, I ignore it. Five seconds later, however, I hear my name being called quietly. Tensing, my mind immediately jumps to the idea that there's a ghost in my bedroom.
Don't look at me like that. I can read minds! Therefore, anything is possible.
When I hear my name again, followed by another soft tap, I turn my head and stare out my window. You don't need to guess who's standing there smiling back at me.
Rushing over to the window, I pull it open. "Are you insane?"
"Probably," he says, as he hoists himself into my room. "Lucky for me, the balcony extends past your window, huh?"
"I think you mean, lucky for you my father didn't come out there with a shotgun."
Mitch's left eyebrow perks up. "Your father has a shotgun?"
I ignore him and take a breath. "What are you doing here, Mitch? How did you even know where I lived? Do you know what time it is?"
"One question at a time, babe," he says, walking over and sitting down on the end of my bed. After looking around my room, his eyes finally focus on me. "It's currently ten past eleven at night. I found out your address from Renee Smith who helps out in the main office after school sometimes. And I'm here because we didn't get to finish our discussion today."
"So did you ask her out?"
Please say no.
Wait, what?
"Who? Renee?"
"Yeah. I saw you talking to her after school. I figured you were taking action after what I told you."
"No, I didn't ask her out."
Yes!
Again, WHAT? Why do I care?
"She asked me out."
"...Oh. So I suppose you said yes."
The corner of Mitch's mouth twitches slightly.
"No, actually, I said no."
YES!
Oh my God, please don't tell me that I actually like this guy?
"And how did Renee take that?"
"She was fine about it."
I snort and shake my head. "Believe me, she's not fine about it. She's probably at home crying her eyes out and scratching out your photo in last year's yearbook."
Mitch shrugs and picks up my favourite childhood teddy bear, Scruffy. Yes, I'm seventeen-years-old and still like to cuddle Scruffy when I go to sleep at night. Big deal.
"I don't really care. I already told you that I found Renee boring. It's not my problem if she can't handle rejection well."
"So I'm assuming your rejection took place after she told you where I lived?"
"You assume right."
I sigh and sit down on my bed next to him. "I suppose it doesn't bother you that you've invaded my privacy, huh?"
He grins at me. "Nope, not really. Besides, I figure that compared to being able to read minds, it's not such a huge invasion of privacy."
"About that, you haven't told anyone have you?"
"No."
I sigh in relief. "Good. You can't tell anyone okay?"
"Do your parents know?"
"Of course they know. It's not every day a person's kid can answer their question when they haven't actually voiced it yet, you know."
Mitch laughs softly. "True."
We sit in comfortable silence for a little while. I take the opportunity to think about the fact that I've come to like Mitch quite a lot, and that I've come to like him without even realising it. I can definitely understand why Renee wanted to go out with him. Mitch Cooper is one good looking guy. If you ignore the piercings in his ear and eyebrow, and the tattoo on the back of his neck, of course. Not that those things bothered me too much. Plus he was charming, and who doesn't like a charmer?
Clearing my throat, I break the silence. "So, I guess that ends our discussion then."
Mitch turns to look at me. I'm purposely not listening into his thoughts because I'm afraid of what I might hear. Plus it's just rude.
"You're thinking something," I say. "I can see that you're thinking something."
"But you're not listening in?"
"No. That's rude."
"Yet you listen in sometimes," he points out.
"Those sometimes are only when I'm tired or distracted or just not concentrating hard enough. I don't mean to, and when a thought enters my head without my realising it, I immediately shut it out."
He nods his head slowly.
"Your nodding doesn't tell me what it is you're thinking."
"I didn't mean those things I thought about you today."
It takes me a minute to figure out what he's talking about, but when I do, I wave it off. "It's fine."
"Well, I didn't mean all of them," he adds with a grin.
"Yeah, okay, Mitch." Did I mention guys can be pigs?
"So, tomorrow night... we should go to the movies."
Talk about a sudden and random subject change!
"Are you asking me out?"
"Yeah," Mitch grins. "What, you never been asked out before?"
No, I haven't, but I don't tell him that.
"I just wasn't expecting you, of all people, to ask me, of all people, out."
"Why?"
"Uh, because up until a couple of days ago, you only knew my name and the fact that I sit in front of you in English."
"A lot can happen in a few days," he replies, shrugging.
You got that right.
I can tell that he senses my hesitation. "Come on," he bumps my shoulder with his. "It'll be fun. You can tell me what everyone in the theatre is thinking about the movie."
I frown slightly. "So you only want to hang out with me because I can read minds?"
"I knew you'd think that."
"Well what else am I supposed to think when you make a comment like that?"
"I want to hang out with you because I think you're interesting."
"You only think I'm interesting because you know that I can read minds."
"How do you know that? Are you reading my mind right now?" He knows I'm not reading his mind right now, and I tell him as much. "Okay yes, I think it's interesting that you can read minds. But that's not why I want to hang out with you."
"Okay then, why do you want to hang out with me then?"
He groans in frustration. "Because I find you interesting."
"...I'm confused."
"Oh my God, it's not rocket science!" he laughs in frustration.
"Well clearly it is because I don't get it."
That makes him laugh even more. "That comment right there is why I want to hang out with you. You say some of the most random things ever. And you make me laugh, and not a lot of girls can do that."
"Gee, I feel so special now."
"And you're sarcastic."
"Thank you, Captain Obvious."
"And despite the fact that you can read minds, you're a helluva lot more normal than most girls at school."
I smile at that. "You think I'm normal?"
He raises an eyebrow at me. "You don't think you're normal?"
"Hello, I can read minds. Of course I'm not normal."
"Nah, reading minds just makes you special. Not a freak."
Mitch Cooper thinks I'm special? Shucks.
"Um, anyway," he says suddenly, as if realising that everything he's just said to me in the last five minutes was incredibly cheesy; which it kinda was. A nice cheesy, though. "Movies tomorrow night?"
I nod. "Sure. Sounds like fun."
"Good. I'll pick you up about seven?"
"Yep, that's fine."
"Cool. You can tell me all about how you became a mind reader on the drive over."
"I can already tell you it's going to be a boring story since I don't even know myself."
He smiles and stands to leave. I follow suit. When he reaches my window, he turns back and hands me Scruffy. I take the aged bear, hugging him to my chest. I watch Mitch climb out my window and throw a leg over the balcony ledge. Suddenly, he pulls his leg back and walks back over to me.
"I forgot," he says, leaning towards me, "to thank you for warning me about Harmony keying my car."
I shrug. "I would have felt guilty for the rest of my life if I hadn't told you. It was nothing."
"No, it was something," he whispers before he kisses me. It wasn't my first kiss - yes, the mind reader has been kissed before, believe it or not - but it was by far the best kiss I've ever had. Pulling away, he smiles down at me. "Thanks."
"You're welcome."
"Do me a favour?"
"Okay."
"When we're together, concentrate extra hard on not listening into my thoughts."
"Why?"
He rubs the back of his neck and grins at me sheepishly. "Well, you know what you were saying before about how the guys in school are pigs..."
"Because all they think about is sex and food?"
"Yeah."
"Yeah?" I ask, still not knowing where he was going with this.
"Yeah," he repeats looking at me pointedly.
"Oh, OH!" Duh, Amelia. "Right. Got it."
"And just so you know, it's more sex than food, and over the past couple of days, it's been focused on one girl in particular."
I know I'm blushing even before I feel my face become hot. "Okay, Mitch, I got it."
"Unless, you know, you want to listen in on those thoughts. If so, just tell me and I'll..."
"No, thank you, Mitch. I'm fine not listening in."
Mitch laughs and shakes his head. "You are too easy."
"Shut up."
"I'll see you tomorrow," he says before kissing me briefly one last time. A girl could get used to that.
I watch Mitch walk back to the balcony ledge and throw a leg over it. As he sits on the ledge, he turns back to look at me. "Listen in to my thoughts now," he says.
Frowning, I let my mind go and reach out to his.
Your secret is safe with me.
"Thank you."
With a wink, Mitch throws the other leg over the ledge and climbs down. I hear him land on the grass of my front lawn with a soft, "Oof", and then watch him jog over to his car, which he's parked further up the street. With a wave, he slides into his car and starts the engine. Shutting my window, I turn my desk light off before falling into bed. Turning on my side, I hug Scruffy to my chest, and with a smile on my face, I close my eyes.
Maybe being a mind reader isn't so bad after all.
Author's note: WOW. This is such a random piece of fiction, I don't even know what to say. Lol. It just popped into my head and refused to go away until I got it typed up. It's not to be taken seriously, and I feel like I could have tidied it up a bit better, but it'd be great to get some feedback on it anyway. Thanks! :D
