Madison Wayne was a normal girl. Well, as normal as a 17-year-old who was turning 18 could be. Her parents, were of the upper class, and did not care for her as much as she would like them to, but still (thank god) paid attention to her.
Her mother was a Fashion Designer and had her own clothing line 'Vanessa' while her father was the CEO of some company in New York. She lived in Upper East Side Manhattan, and went to this fancy private school called Spencer Prep.
She was an senior this year, (her parents had held her back because she was born in September which was the cutoff date) Her birthday was tonight the 1st of September, at 12:00AM, and she was celebrating it with her parents traditionally every year.
Of course of all days, it was pouring out and humid. Kind of like that humid where you're sweaty and sticky and makes you get this massive headache from all the moisture in the air. Yes, that is how it felt when Madison stepped out onto her balcony that morning.
She had an off feeling of the day, but sighed and walked back into her new bedroom. She had moved here a month earlier from London, which made her say her goodbyes to her friends there and promise to write them as soon as she could.
She wasn't required to finish junior year 'since she had finished it in London, but was attending Senior year in 20 days. (yes, she was counting) She shook her head as she closed the balcony doors, turned and walked silently out of her room.
Hours passed until finally it was 11:45.
'Where are my parents?'Madison thought as she went to her Sub-Zero refrigerator in the kitchen to take her little cake out. The words said 'Happy 18th Birthday Madison!' on it in Pink writing. Minutes passed until she sat in the wooden chair on her island and it was only a few minutes until her birthday was to come. Madison took the candle from the baking cabinet and lit it up, as it was now 11:58.
The worst part was, she was getting this massive migraine..and it wouldn't go away. The grandfather clock in the room was almost to the twelve, and she could hear in her head the chimes it would make as it always had on her birthday. The chimes went off loudly through the house, and like a quick flash of light, Madison felt a wind go by, and the candle flew out.
She was now in the dark, as the power went out nearly a second ago. She picked up the matches, and lit the candle and took it out of the cake, while she reached for the cellphone to call her parents.
'Hi, this is Vanessa Wayne, if you are trying to reach me, please leave your name and number and I will get back to you as soon as I can. Ciao!'
"Damnit," she cursed out loud, and she didn't realize it earlier but her headache was gone. The small birthday candle she was holding dropped onto the stone floor (thank god not anything else) and as she went to pick it up, she moved her hand and flames came rushing towards her. She screamed and ran out of the candle's way (which was still sitting on the kitchen floor).
She stared for a long time at that candle. And wondered what the hell just happened?
'How could a candle-'
A door opened, interrupting her thoughts, and caused her to jump again, and suddenly a "Madison, Darling we're home!" her as mother called out to her, and her father was standing right behind her. They were dressed in elegant clothing, her mother in a Versace evening dress and her father in a Gucci Suit, in which they probably went to some fundraiser hosted by one of their annoying rich friends.
Her mother looked at Madison, her dark brown hair and blue eyes matching her own.
"Well darling, your father and I are heading to our bedroom now, get some sleep!" she said, her high voice echoing through the corridor as they disappeared.
Madison walked back into the kitchen and stared at the candle once more. She bent to her knees (careful of not moving her hands) and blew out the candle. She cautiously picked it up, threw it out, put the cake in the fridge and headed off to bed.
