Chapter 1: Stephanie's POV
What happened to our family? Well I guess I already know the answer to that. Dad died and mom couldn't take it anymore. I guess I'm alone. I've always been alone, so it doesn't really matter. Mom and dad were always busy and often left me alone.
But why does mom care so much about me now? Why is she even bothering to make sure that I'll be ok? There is no way I'll be happy at boarding school. It's a school no one has ever heard of. I didn't want to go there. But when did I ever have a choice?
The school was fairly old. The building was anyway. It reminded me of those old buildings they show in movies. The term had just started so I wouldn't have missed too much.
I found the head's office easily. She was a kind woman with long blonde hair and clear blue eyes. I expected the head to be around fifty or something but she was in her early thirties
"Stephanie Langdon I presume? Welcome to Monte Sirene boarding school. It's a pleasure to have you here. Now before we start I have to tell you your house, form teacher and house head. You will be in the west tower. I think that you are in form seven with Miss Evans. And Professor Bliton is your house head. Now do you have any question?"
It all happened so quickly. I didn't know what to say. It was like my voice was gone.
"Well, if that's all I have someone show you your room." She smiled at me.
A few minutes later a girl with curly brown hair and brown eyes and rosy cheeks came in. she smiled at me sweetly.
"Hi you must be Stephanie. I'm Jean. I'm supposed to be your guide." She took hold of my hand and pulled me out of the office.
We walked in silence to our dormitory…at least I thought we slept in dormitories. Apparently we didn't. Each student had to share a room with another person. The girls had their own studies and the boy's rooms and studies were two floors up. The floor above the girl's rooms was the common room and the teacher's room. We also ate breakfast and lunch there. Dinner was eaten with the rest if the school. It was all too much to take.
"I guess Miss Evans is in the art room than." Jean sighed. "Great have to all the way to the art room now. Well you might as well unpack and we'll go down when lessons begin. Miss Evans Is the art, drama and music teacher. She's probably the nicest teachers in the school." Jean said to me as I unpacked.
We were sharing a room. The room had two beds, two wardrobes, two bookshelves, two dressers and two side tables. A lot of twos!
At two o'clock Emma and I went down to the art room. It was large room filled with art supplies such as easels, paint, and clay, even marble! There were also desks in the room. On the teachers desk sat a woman with golden hair and the greenest eyes I have ever since which were outlined with kohl. I had to admit she was beautiful. She wore a green dress with a blue belt. The sleeves were long and gauzy flowing over her arms and opening at her elbow and flowing towards the floor.
"Alright settle down everyone." She said quietly.
Everyone sat down. Emma pulled me into the seat next her.
"That's Miss Evans, our form teacher." Jean whispered to me. Mss Evans noticed.
"Jean, I know it's the first day back but please don't talk." She smiled at us. "You must be Stephanie. It's nice to meet you Stephanie." She smiled at me. I felt a strange sensation wash over me. Suddenly I wanted to just…I felt as thought I had no control over my actions. When she left the sensation was gone.
"Ok, now today -" She began to say but was interrupted by a knock on the door. She gestured for a girl near the door to open. Inside a man with bright green eyes and brown hair come in. He looked very annoyed and bored.
Miss Evans glanced at him and said "Oh, it's just you. What do you want?"
"Geez Nat, no need to be mean. I just came to give you the timetables." He smiled at her playfully as though planning to do something.
"Well…goodbye then." He sighed and left the room mouthing to the class that he'll see us later.
Later on Jean told me that that man was Professor Bliton. She also told me that he and Miss Evans were married despite their names being different
"When she started she told us that Evans was her maiden name because she hates being called Mrs."
Later that night, we had a lot of fun choosing dinner. Since it was the first day the forms were allowed to go out to dinner. Everyone had different choices.
"What do you want?" Professor Bliton asked us.
"I want smoked Salmon at Chez Robert."
"I want to have pizza!"
"Steaks, that's what we should have"
People called out their orders. Professor Bliton was hitting his clipboard on his head. Miss Evans smiled sweetly at him and whispered something in his ears.
"Ok, everyone I want you all to write down what you want on a paper and the choice with the most votes wins." She grabbed a pad of paper and handed each one of us a page.
In the end we had the most delicious steaks I had ever had. That night I don't know what happened. I found myself knocking on Miss Evans door.
"Come in" I heard a voice call.
I walked inside. Miss Evans was sitting at her table surrounded with paper.
"Miss Evans -" Tears were pouring down my face. "I'm sorry…"
She got up from her table and hugged me. "The first day is always hard. I heard about your family and I just want to say that you have to be strong."
We spent most the night talking. I felt myself feeling better when I left. Before I left she told me that her door was always open, day or night. She said that she didn't mind at all.
Little did I know than that my life would change the minute I left her room. If I had known I would have prepared myself for what was coming. Maybe than I would have been able to became stronger and figure it all out before it was too late…But I didn't.
