"Have you ever had a secret you knew you could never share…to protect the people you loved. Even though it kills you daily. I live with that everyday"

Chapter 1

I'm just a typical teen-age boy living in a small town in big old Nevada. Well that's a lie. That's not even close to the truth. My name's Jesse Hamilton and…I'm genetically engineered. That's right, I was cooked up in a tube. Didn't expect that one, did you? I was made in this place called Cyon. I was young, maybe eight or nine, when I escaped so my momory is a little sketchy on the matter. Only thing I remember is that I was created to kill, trained to get in and out undetected. Kind of like Ninjas I guess.

What I do know is that the military wanted these…super soldiers, I don't know what for, and I'm glad. What they had us do, what they were training us to do. It's to horrible for words. All I know is that it was bad. Really bad. I mean end-the-world bad.

We had been assigned to specific groups of people to train with. They were my friends, my family. I would have done anything for them. And we needed to get out of that place. So me and my squad came up with a plan to escape. Exactly what we were trained to do, right? We were going to wait until nightfall. When it was time to bunk down, we struck.

I attacked the guard watching me at my damp wet cell, and took the M-16 he held. I shoved him into the empty cell and locked it. We all met at the end of the long dark hall. The hall had light, from the moon, shaped like windows on the golden wood floor.

"Are we all here." Michael, the oldest, whispered.

Michael had short blond spiked hair. Blue eyes, surrounded by a freckled face.

"Yes" Emily whispered, looking at Andrew.

Emily is a brunette, with green innocent eyes. Her hair was short like boys hair, and her face was pale with a pinkish tint to it. Andrew has a shaved head, but you could tell his hair was a brown color.

"All right, let's move out." Michael commanded, gesturing toward the doorway.

We headed toward the door like he order, but when we made it we were ambushed. We fought hard, but…I was the only survivor. I ran out, and jumped the fence like it wasn't even there. I was finally free. But where would I go?

I was wondering in the deserts of Nevada for days. Then Rachel found me. I guess I would consider her my mother. But she found me walking down the road, in blood covered military clothes.

"Jesse!" Rachel yelled up to me, snapping me out of my memories. "Lindsey called!"

"Thanks mom…do you know what she wanted?" I yelled back down to her.

"No, sorry Hun." She apologized.

"Alright, I'll give her a call." I assured her.

I got up off my bed and walked through my small room, ruffling my hair. I went to the kitchen, and straight to the phone, dialing the number I knew so well. It rang about 3 times, before a cheerful voice answered.

"Hello!" Lindsey chirped.

Lindsey and I have been friends for as long as I remember. She doesn't know my little secret though. It gets harder and harder everyday.

Lindsey has short blond hair that's usually flipped up just above her ears. Her eyes are a lovely shade of golden brown. Sometimes she gives me this look when she wants something, and I can't help but give it to her.

"Hey, you called?" I assumed.

"Yeah, I was just wondering if you wanted to hang this weekend?" She cheerfully asked.

"Sure…why not. What do you have in mind?" I answered, raising an eyebrow.

"Well….there is that new movie coming out…if you want to go that is." She hesitated, hope lingering in her usual cheerful voice.

"Oh right. I forgot about that. What's it called again….Zombie Nation?" I asked her.

"Yeah!" Lindsey giggled out, her normal self returning.

"Is Matthew going?" I huffed dryly.

"Yeah….why is that problem?" Lindsey asked unsure. She always got defensive when people talked about her beloved Matthew.

"What…no, no prob." I assured her, rolling my eyes slightly.

Matthew was Lindsey's new boyfriend. I don't really like him that much. There's just something about him, but if Lins likes him, that'll have to be enough. He's got light reddish-brown hair. Pale skin, and dark almost black eyes.

"Cool…hey do you want to do lunch Jess." Lindsey asked quickly, dropping the subject.

"Sure. I'll swing by and pick you up. We can decided what we want later." I smiled into the phone, even though she couldn't see me.

"Okay…that sounds good. I'll see you soon Jess."

"I guess I'll see you when I see you Lins." I said goodbye and hung up the phone.

I walked into the living room and saw Rachel reading a book. Walking over tothe sofa, I survaid the room. It was a very homey house, with warm colors splashed threw out the entire house. The sofa where arranged neatly around the television, which sat in the center of the room. I stood over Rachel, reading over her shoulder, then kissed her on the top of the head.

"OH!" She shrieked. "You scared me, Jesse!"

I smiled "Sorry mom. What are you reading?"

"Uh, 'Kissed by an Angel' by: Elizabeth Chandler. I bought it today.'' She shrugged, slightly turning back to her book. "Kathy said it was good."

Kathy worked at the bookstore. Her and Rachel have know each other for a while, but they're not what you would call close friends.

"Oh." I said without much enthusiasm. "Hey mom, Lindsey just invited me to the movies…if it's alright with you, I'd like to go."

"That's fine." She glanced up at him and shrugged, then started reading again. "What are you going to see?" She asked not looking up from her book.

"Zombie Nation." I told her, my gaze falling onto the cover of the book. It was black, with a rose stretched across the front. It wasn't a normal rose. The flower's color were inverted, making it look neon.

"Oh, that sounds…interesting."

Rachel isn't really into that kind of stuff. The scary, horror stuff I mean. she's more into the romantic comedies, like Fifty First Dates, with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore.

"Before I forget. I'm suppose to have lunch with Lindsey." I told her "so, I'll be back later. Okay mom?"

"Sure that's fine" She flickered her eyes up from the page. "Have fun, but not too much fun and be back before ten please. Tell Lindsey I said hi."

"I will. Love you." I kissed her on the head again, grabbed my keys, and shut the door behind me.
