Okay you guys, this is the longest chapter that i have ever written in my whole entire life. i'm still surprised that i wrote this much. I think that this story is gonna be awesome and i hope you will too!
Chapter 1
"You will never be normal Violet. You are the ninth," were his exact words, Reese's I mean, he's my mentor or teacher or whatever. Of course at the time I thought he was completely crazy, a nut, coo coo for Cocoa Puffs, but I soon found that he was right. My life would never be normal, at least not like it was.
I sat in detention tapping my pencil against the side of my desk and looking out the window. It was a nice sunny day in Springville; the perfect day for a few laps around the track. I smiled.
"Miss Monroe!" Mr. Manny said angrily. "What have I told you about talking?"
I snapped out of my daze immediately. "What are you talking about? I didn't say anything," I said…oh you have got to be kidding me.
Mr. Manny smiled in mischief. "That's ten more minutes every body." Everyone groaned in reply. "I know, I know, you can all blame Miss Monroe."
I furrowed my eyebrows in disbelief. "That's not fair you tricked me." I fought back. He has just officially sunken to a new type of pathetic.
"Twenty," Mr. Manny said simply.
Mr. Manny has been out to get me ever since last year when I accidently got my hot glue gun stuck in his hair. Now he walks around with some kind of pathetic comb over and takes all his anger out on me. Everybody thought over the summer that he would be able to move on, but of course that was a dumb ass assumption.
Now to top it all off I'm in his class where he can torment me five days a week from 9:45 to 11:15.
(Thanks a lot Violet now I'm gonna be late for my clarinet recital!)
I rolled my eyes. If Ted was that mad then he should come and say it to my face rather then keeping it all to himself. On the other hand he's too much a wimp to confront me.
(I wonder what shade of lipstick I should wear on my date tonight: ruby red or crimson red)
Yes, Rebecca, you have quite the dilemma.
(Oh, Rebecca is so hot! If only…)
Way to go Beck! Looks like your pale skin colored lips works just fine for some people! Congratulations you're a real geek magnet. Your parents must be so proud.
(I wonder if mother will make the smiley faced macaroni tonight) Mr. Manny thought.
What the hell? I couldn't help but to laugh aloud.
"Miss Monroe, how many times do I have to tell you-,"
"Um, excuse me, but Principal Reese needs to see Violet right away," Temper said saving my butt once again.
I jumped up. "Well, looks like I'm free. See you tomorrow Mr. Meaney-Manny," I quickly corrected before I closed the door behind me.
I playfully wiped the back of my hand on my forehead. "Thanks." I said.
"No problem," Temper said indifferently.
Temper and I have been best friends since my old ones dumped me. Well, technically I dumped them. You see, when the whole destiny thing hand cuffed me to its side I had to quit the track team. Of course that wasn't the actual problem, when I barely had any time for them we just stopped hanging out.
At that point my only friend was a closet full of weapons. It was everything from bows and arrows to pretty steel knives. Until one day when some unidentified fugly attacked Temper on her way home and I saved her life. Instead of running away and screaming while she went I believe her exact word was "cool…"
We couldn't exactly expect her to just forget and she swore that she wouldn't tell anybody so we said that she could help. Temper's not much of a fighter so she sticks with Reese and the research stuff.
"So what do you want to do?" I asked as we walk through the empty halls of Springville high. "I was thinking of running a few laps around the track."
"What are you talking about?" she said confusedly. "Reese really needs you."
"So it wasn't just an excuse then?" I asked.
(No) she thought sarcastically.
Reese sat in his chair typing away on his computer like always. When we walked in his head snapped up. "What took you so long?"
"Sorry," Temper went. "But Violet forgot the Password again."
"Hey," I said defensively. "Maybe if Eric would stop changing it so often I wouldn't have to forget."
"I have to change it," Eric said walking into the room. "You can never be too safe."
Okay, remember when I said that Temper never told anybody? Well, she didn't, but she wasn't exactly good at keeping it from her twin brother because he found out. And just like his sister he wasn't freaked but an eager beaver to put his life in constant danger for the greater good.
Also like his sister he has honey blonde hair and blue green eyes. Even though he's part of the stereotypical social circle and she's a total loner, they basically like the same stuff.
"Anyways, Reese what's up?"
"I need you to go on patrol tonight. There was a werewolf spotted roaming around town. Luckily nobody got hurt."
"Well, it's a full moon tonight so I'm thinking we're not gonna be so lucky again," Eric said.
"Okay, let me just stop by my house and change into something more bad ass." I said.
"Remember that you can't kill it," Reese informed me. "It's still human."
I furrowed my eyebrows. "Then what am I supposed to do; kick it unconscious?"
"Funny," Reese smiled standing up and walking into the weapon closet. A second later he came out with a tranquilizer gun.
"Wow," I went taking the gun. "Pretty, but how to I get it back here? I can't just leave it in the street and I would look really weird walking around with a gigantic man wolf on my shoulders."
"You'll just page us and we'll come with the van," Temper said.
"And what if he shows up?" Eric asked.
I blinked suddenly serious. "Then I'll take care of him."
"Take this," Eric said handing me a sword.
"And what am I gonna do with this; challenge him to a sword fight?"
(Just incase) they all thought in unison.
When I got home I quickly dashed for the stairs, but I should have known that I couldn't get passed mom.
"Violet I heard about what happened at school today," she said in a parental tone. "You got put in detention again?" She crossed her arms.
There was no use trying to lie about it. "Yes, but it wasn't my fault."
Mom gawked at me in disbelief. "You hit another student."
"Yeah, but only in defense."
"They said that you started the fight."
I rolled my eyes. "No, not in my defense, the nerd boy's. They were totally planning to make a toilet brush out of his head. I'm sure defending someone's face can be justified."
"Did you tell the teacher that?"
"Who? Mr. Manny? Oh please, like he would ever believe me."
My mom sighed and uncrossed her arms. (I guess helping a classmate can be understood) "Alright, you're not grounded, but honey next time pick your battles carefully." I nodded and she went back into the kitchen.
My room is on the second floor at the end of the hall. I hate my room. I know that sounds really strange, but it's the truth. It's not like I woke up and decided I hated it or anything, it's just that everything's…purple.
It's kind of ironic I guess; my name being Violet and all, but I'm more of a green girl myself. I have just enough posters to cover the walls up, but I can't anything about the other stuff. I mean, I tried spray painting it once, but my mom grounded me for a week. Talking about how I have no appreciation for the stuff she bought. Well, I would have a lot more appreciation if it wasn't purple!
I threw my bag down on my bed and went to my closet; one of the only things I actually don't hate about my room. It's a walk-in, meaning lots and lots of room. I mainly use it to hide my "other" clothes. You know, the stuff that my mom would never dare let me wear in or outside of the house. Well, it's not like I dress the way I do because I want to be some kind of delinquent or something. I do it so that the fuglys (demons) will take me seriously. I mean, who's going to be afraid of someone in pig tails and a skirt? Really.
I picked out some random stuff; it was black and had some leather so I really didn't care.
Just then my little sister Raynebow walked in dragging her teddy bear on the carpet, which, by the way in my room, is purple. "Where you going?" she asked adorably.
Rayne is six years old and has golden brown hair like I had before I dyed it black. She has pretty brown eyes and cute little dimples to match.
Okay I know what you are thinking. What kind of parent names their child Rainbow? Well, I'll tell you…my mom.
Let's just get one thing straight: she's not some hippie like everybody thinks. She's just, well, a rainbow freak. Think about it, where do think she got my name from? And it's not just us, we have a dog named Indigo, my mom's name is Magenta (Maggie for short) and my dad's name was Roy (as in red, yellow, and orange), but that was a coincidence.
Um, just so you know, my dad died a couple of years ago. He wasn't sick or anything just unlucky. He was basically in the wrong place at the wrong time. Mom, Rayne, and I don't really like to talk about it.
"I'm just gonna step out for a little while okay. Don't tell mommy." I told her.
She jumped up onto my bed and I went to close the door behind her. I took my clothes and started to change in the closet.
"When will you be back?"
"Soon," I said tugging my shirt in place. "Just in time to tell you good night." When I finished I closed my closet door and went to fix my hair; wouldn't want it to get hacked off or something.
"Remember dinner's at seven," she said wagging her little finger.
I opened my window. "I'll be back. If mom asks I'm studying and can't be disturbed." I threw my bag out first and then started to climb down.
"Remember shh," I whispered putting my index finger up to my lips.
Rayne mimicked me and I smiled and jumped down.
This is ridiculous, I thought, it's only freakin 6 o'clock. What kind of demon comes out this early? Well, I guess with werewolves it doesn't matter. As soon as the sun goes down they have no control. Ugh, don't you just love daylight savings?
"Here wolfie," I cooed hoping it would respond so I wouldn't look that much of an idiot talking to myself.
With my sword loopy holder thing slung over my shoulder and with my pretty beddy bye gun in my hand I walked into the forest. I sighed, you think with this many stars out it wouldn't be so damn dark. It's not like I have night vision or something. All I have is this stupid telepathy power, which, is totally useless since it only works on humans.
I whispered a chuckle. I remember how I thought I was going crazy when I started answering everybody's questions aloud when they didn't ask me anything in the first place. Luckily Reese found me before I could go suicidal crazy and the doctors took me away to the nut ward in a straight jacket. When he explained everything I gave up on my being crazy and actually thought that he was. Good times.
Of course he didn't tell me before I…
Suddenly I heard a noise coming from, um, my right and I excitedly followed it, dropping my bag of toys so that they wouldn't slow me down. I found it alright, mauling a poor squirrel. I wonder if these things remember everything they did when they change back to people, you know, back into rational thinking and all that. I would think that they would be repulsed or barf or something. I mean, it's just plain sick.
Anyways, I tried to get it with a sneak attack, but that plan crumpled when I accidently stepped on a twig or something and it made that cracking sound. Then it was like attack mode on the animal channel and it's hard to shoot something when it won't stay still!
Then the next thing I know it's on top of me and my gun is nowhere to be found. I had enough strength to restrain it from getting at my face like it was trying to do. It growled at me, probably thinking it would scare me. Well, the only thing I was concerned about was its breath.
I thought that I could try and kick it off, but I couldn't because it weighed a ton. I mean, I know we're strong and all, but we huntresses or whatever we are, are only as strong as regular demons are. For example, if wolfie and I are equally matched and it's got me pinned to the ground, who's got to greater advantage?
Now, like icing on the bittersweet cake, my arms were starting to get all tired, but the good thing was that it was too. Still, it was getting closer and closer and I couldn't do anything about it. And then it was gone.
It felt like this giant mass crushing me just dissipated and I could breathe again. I sighed in relief and then grimaced when I realized that I could be dead. Hmm, I didn't feel dead, then again how would I know what death felt like?
I sat up and tried to wipe the slobber off my jacket. Even though there was no use trying to save it considering Mr. Claws for Brains ripped it to shreds. When he's human again he better believe I'm gonna bill him.
"Hey killer," Liam asked suddenly. "How you been?"
I rolled my eyes. "Now I know I'm not in heaven." I quickly stood up and found him standing there, leaning against a tree.
Okay, Liam is sort of a long story.
He's a demon. I don't know what kind, but really it doesn't matter because I have to kill him. It's my job, but the complicated part was before it was my job. When everything made a lot more sense then it did now.
I first met him one night at a party. It was some girl's named Carrie Miller. When Priscilla was still my friend, she dragged me there. It was loads of fun, the music, the dancing, and the beer!
Hey, don't get your circuits all tangled; I wasn't like some alcoholic or something. I just had a few drinks…and so did Priscilla. Sometime during all that confusion she left. And since she was my ride, I was basically screwed.
Then out of the blue, this insanely fine guy with dark messy hair and neon lime green eyes that basically glowed in the dark came up and offered to drive me home.
"Are you on drugs?" I asked referring to his gorgeous but scary eyes.
He chuckled. "No, but you look like you are," he said holding on to my arms when I nearly fell over.
I sloppily slapped his arm. "Silly, I don't do drugs! But my doggie Indigo does, hmm, maybe I should report him…" and then I collapsed again.
He woke me up in his car when he asked me were I lived. At first I wouldn't tell him, scared that he was some kind of a serial killer or something. "Who are you anyways?" I murmured, the stupidity fading into a headache.
"My name is Liam."
"Hey, Liam I'm, um, I forgot," I whispered and then I yawned.
"You see," he said reaching over to buckle my seat belt. "You're tired, so tell me where you live and I'll drive you home."
I hesitated.
Liam half smiled. "You can trust me, I promise."
Then I told him, somehow knowing that he was telling the truth; I could trust him. I woke up the next morning in my bed, my head totally pounding. I was totally freaked though, worried that he had told my mother. I hurried down the stairs.
"Um, morning mom," I said.
"Morning honey," she responded with a smile. "How was the party? You came in pretty late so I'm guessing that you had fun."
"Yeah, it was fun I guess," I told her struggling to remember most of it. My memory was all blurry like a television without cable.
"Well, that's nice," she went. "You hungry? I could fix you those chocolate chip pancakes to love so much."
I really did love those pancakes, but the thought of eating anything made me sick. "No thank you, I'm just gonna hop in the shower." I said noticing that I was wearing the same clothes as the night before.
I went back to my room wondering how in the world he got me in the house without anyone noticing and so very thankful that he did.
It's too bad I'll never see him again, I thought disappointedly. Then I walked in to find a beautiful red rose on my night stand and a note next to it. It was a phone number and below it read:
Call me, Liam.
You better believe I called him.
Next thing I know we're a couple. Not the corny hand holding type, but we just loved hanging out with each other. It was kind of strange that I could only see him at night, but that's part of the reason I liked him so much; the mystery. Plus, what kind of girl can resist the bad boy type?
The other cool thing was that we basically liked the same stuff. We both loved licorice and silent movies and partying obviously. Except we both did our best to stay sober.
Then came the day that 1800- destiny rang on the telephone. It changed a lot of stuff; my school life, my friends, my home life, but not Liam and I. The only thing that really changed between us was that I could read his mind. Well, I was supposed to be able t read his mind, but all I got was silence from him. Another reason that made me like him more; he didn't give me a headache.
I was about ten minutes from being completely in love with him. Until one night we were walking home from the movies. "That movie was so awesome," I said taking another bite of licorice.
"It was alright," he shrugged stealing my stick of heaven from out of my hand.
I furrowed my eyebrows. "You didn't like it?"
"Nah, the whole chainsaw thing; I've seen scarier."
I rolled my eyes. This was another interest of ours; scary movies. I could never find a movie scary enough to actually scare him.
Then something changed in him. He stopped. "Liam?" I asked wondering why he stood there.
He ignored me, his eyes totally scanning the town. "I'll be right back," he said right before he ran around the corner.
"Liam," I said confusedly. "Wait a minute, what's going on?" I called after him.
"Just hold on," he called back.
At first I did as he said, I waited patiently for him to come back and explain. But my anxiousness got the best of me and I followed him around the corner even though he told me not to.
When I got there he was in the middle of a fight with a huge unidentified fugly. It was big and brown and looked like it was half fish or something.
I panicked totally prepared to go and help him, but something in the back of my head told me not to. What are you, crazy Violet? Go and help him! I thought, but the more I watched him, the more I realized that he didn't need my help. He killed it all by himself; ran a piece of scrap wood through it and it burst into flames before it disappeared. The only thing left was a glowing glass ball in its place.
What really freaked me out was when Liam picked it up like he actually wanted it. "My god," I whispered.
His head snapped up. "Violet," he tried hiding the energy ball. "What are you- I told you to stay-."
I shook my head in denial. "Why do you want that? Only they want those," I felt like I had been punched in the gut. "You're one of them aren't you?" It all made sense; the issue with sunlight, the lack of thoughts.
"Violet…how do you know about-behind you!" He yelled. Apparently these things liked to travel in pairs.
I swung its fist at me and I ducked and tripped it forward. It got up and it came at me again, this time shooting it's frog like tongue at me. I dodged it again and ended up rolling along the ground and into a pile of wooden crates.
Liam took it from behind and threw it against a wall. I quickly pulled my handy dandy dagger from out of my boot. Then stood up, ready to stab the heck out of that thing, and went towards it.
"Violet, get out of the way," Liam yelled.
"What?"
"Just move!"
I did what he said and backed away and then gasped at a sight I never thought that I would ever see.
A ball of flame shot out from Liam's hand and killed it. And just like every other demon it left a ball of pure demonic energy in its place.
I gulped. "So it's true then." It wasn't a question.
He took a step toward me, his hand out. "Violet, I-."
I stepped back from his advance. "I can't believe this," I whispered looking down. "I'm so stupid!"
"Vi, calm down and let me explain," he said anxiously.
I shook my head, tear welling up in my eyes. "I should have known. All the signs were right there! Your eyes, how you never came out in daylight, I couldn't read your mind…"
I looked up and saw the confusion on Liam's face. "Violet, what are you talking about? You're not making any sense."
I ignored him. "Was this your plan all along?" I asked my voice breaking. "To get me to like you so that you could turn on me?"
"Violet, I swear that I have no idea what you're talking about," he said.
I chuckled bitterly. "Don't you dare stand there and act like you don't already know." I muttered.
At first he was just dumbfounded, but I could see as the realization came to his face. I could also see a tiny spark of pain in his eyes, but I didn't believe it. Everything about him was a lie.
"You're her," Liam said simply. "You're the Ninth."
Traitorous tears welled over. "I can't believe I fell for this," I whispered to myself as I walked over to the corner that the demon burned in.
"You have to believe me," he begged. "Violet, I didn't know. Violet?"
I picked up the energy orb and looked at my reflection. Then I turned to him. "You want this?"
He took another step toward me suddenly serious. "Violet, what are you doing?"
"I. Asked. You. A. Question," I said slowly.
Liam looked away from my gaze and nodded.
I pursed my lips and then threw the damn thing as hard as I could against the wall. Liam flinched at the sound. "Too bad."
Liam snarled and I gasped at the sound.
"That's right," I said through my teeth. "Just like the monster you are."
"This isn't over," he warned before he vanished.
"You bet your evil ass it isn't," I said.
And that's how everything went to hell. When I told Reese he told me that I had to kill him. I was all on board too, but the problem was that there was no known vanquish in our reference books. Like Liam was that good at covering up his tracks.
It didn't matter if I couldn't kill him because I never wanted to see his lying ass ever again. That was kind of hard, though, considering the fact that he started showing up every time there was a demon in town. He didn't care who killed it or if it killed me; all he wanted was his stupid demon ball.
So I did my very best to make sure that he couldn't get it. I don't know why he wanted with those things, but I knew it couldn't be something good. Some nights he'd get lucky and snatch one before I had the chance to crush it, but I make sure that it isn't very often. I believe he's gotten thirteen so far, out of twenty five, but I have no idea how many he's gotten his hands on before.
This time is different though, somewhere behind all that…hair, this werewolf is still human. Liam plans to kill it, but I won't let him.
Okay you guys tell me what you think! Please review!
