Friends, No Matter What!

Chapter 1

It was Friday of the third last week before the Christmas holidays, and it was free dress. Kath, Leesh, Lana and Morgan always dress in their most expensive clothes for free dress day.

Kath was wearing a low cut pale yellow top that had three quarters sleeves with Black skinny jeans and Black pumps. Lea was wearing a White three quarter sleeve dress to the knee with dark blue slip on's and a matching purse. Lana, loving the colour Red, was wearing a Red cuffed sleeved V neck top with a Black mini skirt with Red stiletto's. Morgan was wearing a White button down shirt with a Black pencil skirt with Black stiletto ankle high boots.

They walked into the school grounds and up to their lockers; they put their school bags in and got their books ready for first period. Kath and Lana got their Maths books, while Lea and Monz got their English books out. The bell rang and they walked down the stairs to their classes, agreeing to meet at the fountain after class.

After class they met up at the fountain, and walked to Art together.

When Art finished they walked up to their lockers and put their books away, when they reached the stairs Kathryn remembered to get her sunglasses. She got them and turned to catch up with her friends, when she heard a door opening. She quickly placed her sunglasses on top of her head and turned around to see who it was; it was Miss Redbird, her Science teacher. She was wearing a purple shirt - the same style as Kath's but with a black pattern down the side with deep Blue jeans. She was carrying a pile of folders and a stack of paper on top. It looked like she was having trouble balancing everything, so Kath decided to help her. She turned back to her friends and waved, meaning 'I catch up later' they nodded and walked off, Lea looked over her shoulder before she was out of sight. Kath gave her a smile and mouthed 'I'll be fine.' Lea nodded and walked on, without looking back. When Lea was out of sight, Kath turned and saw that Miss Redbird was about to start walking down the stairs.

"Miss, would you like some help?' she asked as she started walking towards her.

Tina looked around the pile of folders and papers, and smiled. "That would be lovely Kathryn, thank you."

Kath stopped beside her and let her give her the pile of folders. As they started walking down the stairs Kathryn spoke up.

"Why do you always call me Kathryn?"

Tina laughed softly. "Well, it is your name, is it not?"
"Well yer, it is. But all my friends call me Kath, or something short for Kathryn."

"Well, I'll call you by your name until you tell me otherwise, unless you want me to call you Miss Stevens, hmm?"

"Yer thanks but no thanks. Just something shorter, something informal."

"Ok, but give me a while on that, I've been calling you the same thing for two years now, and while we're talking about names why don't you call me Tina while we're not in class?"
Kathryn stopped mid-step, and looked towards her teacher. Luckily she was in front, so she didn't notice.

"Sure, but you have to give me a while on that, nine years in school and it's drummed into you that you should show respect to your teachers by calling them, sir, ma'am, Miss, Mrs. or Mr. it will take me a while, to get used to."
She answered as she started walking down the last few steps and joined her teacher.

"So where are we taking these," She tilted her head to the right a bit "Year eleven assignments to?"

Tina looked at Kathryn and tilted her head to side. "To my car, I have to mark them over the week end, and how can you read upside down?"
"It's something I taught myself."
"Why, pray tell, would you need to teach yourself to read upside down?"
"Well, in Maths I share a text book with Lana, and in Science, I share a text book with Lea and since neither of them like sharing a book, I give it to them and sit on the other side of the table or bench and read what I have to upside down. How could you not notice that I'm pretty much always never facing the board in class?"
"I'm normally always facing the board, because I'm the person to write all the stuff on it, and every time I turn around, your writing, so I trust you." She answered as they turned the corner behind the office.

"And what happens if you have homework? I know I've assigned you homework where you use the textbook, on more then one occasion."

"It depends, if it's Lea we go to my house, if it's Lana we go to the park near her place, and we work through it together. I tutor Lana in Maths, and Lea helps me with most of my assignments." She said as they turned the corner leading to the staff car park.

"So, which car is yours?" She said, eyeing all the cars in the lot.

Tina laughed. "Getting sick of talking with you teacher already? Anyway, it's the black one." She said nodding towards the black car only ten or so meters away.

"Nah, I like talking to teachers, especially you. You always talk to me as an equal. And I don't mind that I prove most of them wrong. It's funny watching their faces when they've realized that they were wrong and that it was pointed out by me." She said laughing. "Plus, I just wanted to know when I could put these folders down. I can't believe you have to do all this work in one week end. I'm flat out doing my assignments and I'm given weeks to do them."
Tina laughed as she placed the stack of papers on the boot of her car and unlocked it. "It takes a lot of getting used to, and you really need to organize your time better, your last assignment was good, but not your best. I'm guessing Lea didn't help you with it?" She said as put everything on the back seat of her car.

"No, I got caught up with my English work and helping Lana with her Maths, while doing my Maths work, I forgot about it, so I ended up rushing it."
Kath sighed and stretched her arms across her chest. Tina stood up after she closed and locked the door, and placed her hands on her back and stretched.

"Oh god, I have got to stop falling asleep at my table when I'm marking." She muttered.

"I know what you mean, I fell asleep at the computer desk in English after pulling an all nighter for that assignment, and I woke with the biggest back pain."

Tina looked at Kath; who was now flicking her left wrist.

"Why are you flicking your wrist and did you get in trouble for falling asleep during class?"
"No, the teacher understood, after Tess explained. As for the wrist, I broke it when I was in year seven, and I can't carry heaving things in it for long before it starts to hurt. Although I can beat most people in arm wrestling with it." she said, laughing softly at the memory of beating all the boys in her class.

"Tess? Who's that?"
"Tess; you know her as Celeste. Lana and I call her that because that's how she introduced herself when I met her. Lana started calling her that when she got mad at using her full name"

"Celeste Saunders?" Kath nodded "Smart girl, one of the top three in the whole grade, well in my class. Not sure about the other teachers."

They turned another corner and walked straight towards the stairs to Tina's office and Kath's locker. When they reached the top of the stairs, Kathryn put her hand on Tinas arm. Tina looked down and smiled faintly, but when she looked up at Kath, her expression was unreadable.

"Wait here for a sec." Kath said and walked over to her locker; she opened it and pulled out a package, wrapped in black paper and tide with green ribbon. She walked back to Tina.

"This is just something I made for you. It's my way of saying thank you for everything." She said, while looking down to hide the faint blush that was creeping its way up into her cheeks. She held the parcel out to Tina.

Tina took it. "Thank you, Kathy." She looked up "You should probably get going, your friends are probably worrying about you."
Kath nodded, noticing that Tina had called her Kathy, not Kath. Everyone called her Kath.
"Yeah, I should. Bye, Tina." She turned on her heel and walked down the stairs, feeling that Tina was watching her.

When she stepped off of the last step, she reached up and put her sunglasses on. She turned and walked in front of the stairs, she looked up at the veranda – without moving her head – to see her teacher quickly look away. She decided not to think about the way Tina had been looking at her.

After walking towards the table she and her friends sit at, she couldn't help but start thinking, what if Lea was right. She pushed away the thought when she saw that Lea was looking around.

She sighed 'she worries too much' she thought. She walked up t the group and sat down next to Leesh. She pushed her glasses on top of her head and narrowed her eyes, but gave her a sweet smile. Leesh knew that she won't tell her what happened when they were gone, but she still worried, everyone knows that Miss Redbird is gay, and her spending extra time with Kath was worrying even more. She sighed and went back to listening to Monz talk about a cute guy.

After lunch they walked up to their lockers and got their books. Lea grabbed her Maths gear and left saying she'd meet them at the table, Morgan and Lana got their Science stuff and walked down to the end of the veranda to wait for Miss Redbird. Kath got out her English book and pencil case. She turned to walk down the stairs in front of the staffroom, but decided to say bye to Monz and Lana. She walked up to them and waved, but before she could say bye, she heard the door to the staffroom open and close. She threw a look of sorrow to her friends and hurried down the stairs. She rushed to English; she didn't want to end up with detention for being late. She made it to class just as Mr. George came out of his office.

"Class, today we're going to be writing a short story, two pages long…" he droned on and on and on. Kath wasn't worried though, she loved writing stories. Once she sat down and started writing, every thing became a blur.

When the bell rang, she re-read the last paragraph of her story.

It was a sad day for Serena.

She had just come from the hospital.

She had to say goodbye to her mother.

But she knew, no matter what,

She would see her again.

And with that thought, a small smile bloomed.

Happy with the way she had written it, she wrote her name on it and handed it to the teacher and walked out of the class room.
She waked up to her locker and put her book and pencil case away. She pulled her sunglasses off of the top of her head and put them on. Leaning against the railing, she waited for Lana and Monz to come out of Science.

She didn't have to wait long, the class filed out of the room, Lana came out looking upset.

"Lana, what's the matter? Where's Monz?"
Lana shook her head and pointed back towards the classroom, and left.

Kath took a step forward; she could make out the shape of Monz's back, but couldn't see anything else.

All of a sudden Monz turned and walked out of the room. Her eyes were red from crying, she was still crying. Kath walked up to Monz.

"Monz, what happened?" She asked quietly, pushing her glasses on top of her head.

Monz collapsed into Kathryn's arms and cried.

"Shh…it'll be alright. Monz, it'll be fine."

Morgan cried a bit harder and took gulps of air.

"Monz, what happened?" She repeated her earlier question.

"I failed Kath, I failed my Science assignment." She answered and cried even harder. She was now taking great gulps of air.

"Monz you're going to have to calm down. You're going to hyperventilate."

Morgan wasn't listening, she just cried even harder then before. Kath pulled back and placed her hands on Morgan's shoulder.

"Morgan Ellawease Vandenberg! You will listen to me, calm down."
Monz looked at Kath and nodded.

Kath wrapped her arms around her again and whispered in her ear.

"Don't worry about it; it's not the end of the world. I'm sure Lea can help you, if she can't, I will."
"Thank Kath." Monz whispered back.

"That' ok. Come on, Lana left before you came out, and Lea's probably waiting with her."

Monz nodded, she walked up to her locker, put her books away and walked back to Kath. They waked over to the stairs and started walking down. Kath looked up and saw Tina walking out of the class room; she looked at Kath and smiled. Kath tried to smile back but shook her head and continued walking down the stairs; leaving a confused teacher watching after her.
