Endless Rain

By Destiny's Call

Cursing under his breath, he stood there in front of his apartment looking and feeling like a drowned rat. Pushing back the dark strands of hair that clung to his forehead and hung over his eyes, he furiously searched for his keys. Shivering, he put the key into the keyhole and entered his empty apartment. Green eyes glaring at the wall in front, he slammed the door shut and locked it without so much as a look back.

"Fucking rain! Never trusting the weather channel again!" he muttered. Rain always made his mood foul and he couldn't help but take on a cynical attitude.

Taking off his shoes, the phone started to ring. "Ugh." He walked quickly through the front hall and into the living room, leaving a trail of puddles on the glossy hardwood floor. Picking up the phone, he had to hold the cordless away from his ear in fear of permanent ear damage.

"Addy! He proposed! I told you he would! I knew he wouldn't last too long," Elizabeth, his twin sister, everything but bellowed from the other end, laughing joyously. Although he was happy for his sister, he couldn't help but feel his gut twist.

"That's amazing Beth…but how many times do I have to tell you not to call me by that name?" He used to call me that.

The other end suddenly became silent. "…sorry Adam, I wasn't thinking. I got so caught up in the moment and…yeah…sorry." The excited voice instantly became morose. He could almost see the deflating face of his soft hearted sister.

Adam Winters was now feeling like a real horse's behind. It's the fuckin' rain, he thought. "Hey Eli? Lil' sis? Don't worry about it, it's just the rain making me go haywire," he said softening his voice, then thinking it better to change the subject, he smirked "sooo, how exactly did you force him to say it?"

The other side went silent yet again and then he could almost see Beth's eyes go round as if processing what he just said since she promptly hollered "WHAT'S THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN!" Adam threw back his head and laughed.

The rain hadn't let up the entire day. It would slow down to a drizzle and then start pouring again, which didn't help Adam's mood one bit.

After taking a hot shower to get rid of the chills in his bones, Adam had dozed off on the sofa. This he now regretted. Getting up he stretched feeling his bone creaking, a result from lying in an uncomfortable position. Sluggishly, he made his way to the kitchen to make a hot cup of coffee. As he was making the coffee, he felt a small furry body rubbing itself against his legs. Looking down, he met with amber eyes staring back at him curiously. Chuckling, Adam picked up the white cat and held her against his chest as he finished making the coffee.

Going back to the living room, he made a beeline for the windowsill, where he sat down, putting the cat on his lap, sipping the newly made coffee. He lived on the twentieth floor in a high-rise apartment, so the view he got from the window was spectacular at night. This is probably the only reason Adam decided to rent this place.

Looking down, he stroked the cat fondly. A year ago, Adam had found her as a kitten abandoned in the park and felt an affinity towards her. Taking her back home, he and nursed her back to health and named her Milk because of the pure white coat the cat sported. For the past year, Milk had helped drive away some of Adam's loneliness, but still getting up everyday has become a daunting task for him.

Adam was gay. He had known this since middle school when he started to find a fellow male classmate attractive. His family however had never spurned him for his sexuality. Adam was always grateful to his family for their support when he was struggling to find his way.

Looking out the window, the city lights seemed to lose some of its brightness when being looked through a curtain of water. Feeling the familiar nostalgia come up, Adam tried to look away but found his eyes glued to the outside world. Staring fixedly at the downpour, he couldn't help but remember…

Groaning, Adam ran across the park towards the water fountains which had an overhang. Not having an umbrella, he didn't want his new art supplies to get wet. Now that he was standing under the overhang, a figure caught his eye.

The person had his back turned towards Adam. The stranger was standing outside the overhang a few feet away towards his right. He was tall, and his clothes were now sticking to his slender form, his hands in his jeans pockets and head thrown slightly back. It was obvious; the stranger was savoring the rain. For reasons unknown to Adam, he couldn't help but stare. The stranger, as if sensing his stare, turned towards him. Adam suddenly felt deprived of oxygen.

The tall defined frame before him was breathtaking. Suddenly, Adam's senses became painfully sharp. He could see the rain droplets collect on the stranger's long dark lashes as those deep blue eyes stared inquisitively back at him. Long golden fingers brushed back the black hair and those red moist lips parted as if to say something.

Adam felt his body tighten and felt hot and cold at the same time. It was hard to breath and hard to talk. He felt so full and yet very starved. Heat crept up Adam's neck and his lips parted in a silent gasp. Then he saw the corners of those red lips turn upwards and felt his heart clench as he heard the most beautiful voice.

"Hey"

Blinking, Adam saw the city again. He was in the present again. Shaking his head, he felt his throat dry. Tears were now streaming down his cheeks that he heatedly wiped away, leaving his cheeks red and raw. Mentally, Adam cursed the day he met him.

Looking down, he saw Milk was no longer there. Sighing he looked out the window again and at the infernal downpour. The rain was endless.
