A/N: This was for a contest on Mibba that I entered. It was a songfic contest and if you guys cant guess from the story the song was Stranger by Secondhand Serenade. Before this contest I have never even heard of the band but decided to give it a try anyways. I wrote this story in only a handful of hours so obviously I was inspired. Yay inspiration.
The coffee was cold again but Nico barely noticed as the bitter drink touched his lips because his eyes were fixed on the woman across the café. She was the only reason he bothered coming into this crappy roadside café that only travelers and people who were absolutely desperate for a caffeine fix came to. The only reason he tolerated the bitter, cold coffee was because this beautiful woman served it to him every morning.
One would think that he knew her, talked to her every day but no, that wasn't the case. Every day that he came in she gave him a false smile and looked at him with eyes that seemed to see right through him, like he was just another face in the crowd. But even if she barely noticed him, Nico noticed her. He had studied her closely the past two months, taking in her never changing appearance. Black hair that was always tied back into a ponytail and blues eyes set into an angelic face that always had a false smile for the customers.
She was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen and he wished he was able to talk to her. Just once be able to form the words "hello" or "how are you today?" Except every time he tried the words caught in his throat and it was like his body was forcing him not to talk to this gorgeous stranger. The only thing he had ever accomplished saying to her was "coffee" when she asked for his order.
Nico felt like an obsessed stalker coming in every morning before work and watching her for an hour a day. He felt like a pervert watching her like he did but he tried not to think like that, he tried to think more along the lines that he was trying to find a way to talk to her, to ask her out on a date, anything but look at her like a love sick puppy.
His eyes quickly went to his coffee when the woman looked in his direction, like she knew someone was staring holes into her back. When he glanced up again she was back to wiping down counters and answering customer's questions on food orders.
Nico wished he knew her name, she word a name tag but the letters were faded. All he knew was her name started with 'An', which could be any number of names. Anna, Andrea, Angela, Angel. He liked to think her name was Angel because that's what he first thought she was. An angel fallen from Heaven, gracing him with her presence and beauty.
Finishing his cup of coffee, he looked at the analog clock that was positioned above the door. It was time for him to go but maybe he would try talking to her again. Maybe, just maybe he could find the courage within himself to ask for her name or at least say hello to her before she called the cops on him for stalking.
He motioned for her to come over she did so with a smile, "What can I do for you?"
Nico opened his mouth but no words came out. Finally he gave up on saying hello and looked down, "Check, please."
The woman just smiled at him and walked away and his sighed angrily at himself, cursing under his breath for being such a coward. When the woman came back with his check, set it down on the table in front of him with a pen before walking away he knew he'd blown his chances of ever having a civilized conversation with the woman of his dreams.
Taking ten dollars out of his wallet he put it on the table before flipping the receipt over and grabbing the pen. He looked at the blank side of the shiny, white paper thoughtfully trying to think what he could possibly write without seeming like a complete weirdo.
Then finally with a deep breath he wrote, "Hey Stranger. I'll see you tomorrow."
