The Woman in the Moon

We were inventing new ways to look at the moon
When he took it down and pinned it
Waterlily white, just above my ear.
"I see!" I said, "You believe you've given it?"
"Not so clever naked, Diana," he replied,
Washing me translucent with his eyes.
The sky blinked blue and shook itself,
Lugubrious with loss, waiting sadly.
All at once I realised the guy had a point -
Two o'clock slummed it, we shifted on the fence -
"My dear, how did I lose my clothes?"
