Kirsti and Landon
Kirsti pushed her way through the crowd of twelve and thirteen year olds. She finally got to her locker, but she had to bend down to open it. She absolutely loathed having a bottom locker. First of all, she was way too tall, and second of all, the occupant of the locker above her had dropped books on her numerous times. It was while she was having these dismal thoughts that she noticed that there was a boy at the locker beside hers. She had never seen him before.
He had to be the new student that everyone was talking about today during her first period class. "Hey," she said, and then waited for a bit when he didn't answer immediately. After a moment, he turned towards her and gave an almost imperceptible nod of his head. She tried again. "What do you have for your next class?" she asked. He mumbled something almost inaudible and walked away. She pursed her lips as she stared after him.
Throughout the day, she noticed that Landon, the new boy's name as one of her friends had told her, barely associated with anybody. In the only class they had together, which was science, he didn't say a word. Kirsti thought that he might just be nervous about his first day at school. When lunch came though, Landon sat by himself. Kirsti decided to go sit by him.
He had chosen the table in the very corner of the cafeteria, she noted as she placed her tray on the table and sat down. Landon looked up but then quickly looked away. The silence was awkward, so Kirsti took a bite of her pizza for something to do. "I'm Kirsti," she said suddenly, realizing she hadn't introduced herself. He mumbled his name, but she already knew it. For the rest of lunch, she babbled on and on to fill up the silence. She wasn't bothered too much by his lack of response.
The next day was much of the same. He barely socialized with anyone and never raised his hand in class. Kirsti sat with him again at lunch. As before, she talked a lot, but this time Landon contributed to the conversation a little bit more. As the week went on, Kirsti sat by him at lunch everyday.
Days turned into weeks, and weeks into months. By the end of the school year, Landon and Kirsti were best friends. They were inseparable, and they did everything together. He always went over to her house, but she never went to his. In early May, she found out why.
"I live in a foster home. . . I didn't want to tell you because, for once, I just wanted to feel normal around somebody. I'm really sorry I kept it a secret from you, Kirsti." She was at a loss for words. She had no clue what to say. She finally told him that she didn't think of him any differently. Too bad that wasn't the end of all the shocking news.
"At the end of the school year, I have to move again." He looked so sad as he said it. Kirsti tried her best not to cry. She couldn't believe it. Her best friend in the whole world was moving away.
In Kirsti's opinion, Nicholas Sparks put it best. "Time is relative," he once stated in a book. Kirsti thought that time was a very fickle thing. When she wanted to stop and enjoy the moment, time seemed to speed up. When she was bored or anticipating something, it was like everything was in slow motion. Well, that might be a slight exaggeration.
In that last month, days had seemed to pass more like seconds. On that last day, the day Kirsti had to say goodbye to Landon, it was hot and sunny. It was Kirsti's favorite type of day. It was ironic because she hated this particular day, and she had been dreading it for a while. Kirsti tried really hard not to cry, but as they promised to call each other, a few tears fell onto her cheeks. "Bye," Landon whispered before he turned and got into the car.
Kirsti didn't watch him drive away. She pivoted on her heel and walked away before the car even pulled out of the driveway. She had loved having Landon around. He always made her laugh, and on those days when she just couldn't seem to force a smile on her face, he had been there to listen to all the things that were bothering her. She would really miss Landon. She hoped he would find a new friend wherever he was going.
This was just a really short story I had to write for my English class. I know it's nothing special, but I just felt like posting it. Reviews would still be appreciated though. =)
