The Only Exception

Chapter One

Jealous Friends and Invisible Skateboards

"No true love there can be without its dread penalty-jealousy"

"Riles I don't think I will ever understand why you put on so much damn eyeliner. I mean you look hot all natural." I said standing in the mirror next to my older sister Riley who was running an eyeliner brush over her upper lid.

"I know." She said dipping the brush in the gel eyeliner bottle. "But I love the abundance of eyeliner. It makes my eyes pop out." She said widening her eyes as she said pop.

"Yeah of course it does." I looked away sarcasm laced in my voice.

"You know it does."

"I know." I said taking the brush from her "But since I don't do all the extra shit you do let me just see this."

"That was rude of you Dylan."

"Riley I'm going to give it right back." I said running it over my lower lid then the other "See, here, that didn't even take but two seconds."

"Get out and wait downstairs. Austin is coming to pick us up."

"Ugh, why? We should all just walk and not pollute the air. It'll help the earth and we can exercise."

"Totally, then we could slash everyone's tires at school so they'll have to walk too and we won't pollute the air so much."

"Ha ha Riley. I was kind of serious you know?" I said leaning against the door frame.

"I'm not going to walk twenty blocks just because you don't want to ride in the car with my best friend. It's only for about seven minutes."

"Oh yeah the seven best minutes of my life. I just love being in the presence of Austin. He's just so dreamy."

"Oh really?" A voice behind me startled me a bit.

Riley laughed and I turned around to find Austin flashing me a smirk then looking at Riley "You better be ready in five minutes."

"Don't flatter yourself Austin. I'm pretty sure you're not dumb enough to not have picked up on the sarcasm in that last statement I made."

"I won't." He said then turned around walking back down the stairs.

"He's so…"

"Cool?" Riley suggested turning towards me, her make-up complete.

"The coolest." I gave a tight smile before going to my room to grab my book bag and phone.

I had a text from Cortez that read 'c u at school babe'. I rolled my eyes with a small smile as I stuffed my phone in my pocket.

I went downstairs and Riley was hitting Austin in his arm.

"No violence Riley. But I'll make an exception for Austin." I smiled cheekily before walking out the door to Austin's beautiful black brand new Mercedes Benz which was named Vicki. Well that's how he said it when I asked what kind of car he had.

"Happy Monday Dylan." Riley said as she walked out the house towards me "Be happy."

"Mondays? Oh yeah my favorites. I love having to wake up early after not having to for two days."

"Don't be such a negative Nancy. At least you get to see Cortez."

"I guess." I shrugged as Austin unlocked his doors.

I climbed in the backseat and closed the door waiting for Austin who was taking his sweet time to get in. I looked over and noticed his skate board. I've never seen him actually skate before.

Alejandro Cortez is my best friend that I have known since we were three years old. I call him Cortez or Alex but I think Cortez fits him better. He's my everything and I love him to death. I would go crazy without that crazy ass Mexicano. We were pretty much each others first at everything. We lost it to each other last year and he was my first kiss. We tried going out but that didn't work at all.

"Dylan, you going to that party on Friday?"

"Nope, I'm going to stay home and milk the secret cows we have in the basement bathroom for grandma."

"I swear you can be more sarcastic than me sometimes." She said and I could practically hear her rolling her eyes.

"So you're going with me?" Riley asked looking at Austin.

"Yeah sure. If you want me to."

"When do I not want you to come with me? It's no fun without you there with me."

"Of course it isn't Riles."

I rolled my eyes sighing tired of Austin already. He doesn't even have to talk to me and I'll get irritated by him, that's how much I hate the guy. You don't hate him that much. Yes, I do. Yeah, but how about that one time you gave him a piece of your chocolate bar? That was years ago when I was young and stupid. You're still young and stupid. Oh yeah and my conscience is just the smartest sweetest little thing in the world. I know.

I tuned Austin and Riley's talking out by humming along to the music that flowed from the speakers. We arrived at school six minutes later and I got out the car while Austin was still parking. I knew it pissed him off when I did that. He always thought I was going to hit the door on the car next to us but of course I'm not that much of a bitch because I wouldn't want him to do it to my car. But I have considered it some days.

I heard Austin mutter a 'bitch' as I closed the door and walked towards the school. I searched among the crowd for a familiar face and when I didn't see him I pulled out my phone and dialed his number.

"Hola sexy."

"Where are you Cortez?"

"I'm in the quad with Dawn."

"I'm on my way." I said disconnecting the call and walking towards the quad.

I looked over to where we usually sit until classes began and spotted them sitting at the table talking. I walked towards him and was stopped by my friend, Katie.

"Hey Dylan." She smiled falling into step with me giving me a side hug.

"What's up?" I smiled back not really returning the hug.

"Nothing, how are you?"

"I'm okay, just trying to find Alex." I said trying to drop a hint but I don't think she was getting it.

"Oh, well you should totally come and sit with us."

"I would love to but there he goes right there." I said pointing to the table a few steps away from me.

"Okay, maybe at lunch."

"Sure."

I got to the table and sat next to Cortez giving him a big hug and a peck on the lips. I felt him try to deepen the kiss but I pulled back with smirk.

"Every chance I get." He smirked back.

"Hey Dawn, what's up?" I smiled at her and smiled back cheerily.

"Nothing, I was just telling Alex here about my weekend with Conner."

"Oh, well please continue."

"Okay well after he took me out for dinner he took me home and he walked me to the door of course."

"Did you bang him?" Cortez asked spinning his phone around on the table looking at her with a smirk.

"What? No way." She seemed taken aback but she should be used to Cortez's sexual comments and questions.

"So what happened that you didn't want to go back out with him?" Cortez asked "You seemed pretty hyped that he asked you out."

"I was but then we he kissed me it was horrible. I never knew that a guys mouth could taste so… so—"

"Vilely?" I asked looking up from my phone.

"Yes!" She exclaimed slamming her hands on the table making Cortez and I jump a bit.

"You're a crazy bitch but you're sweet… sometimes." I said sitting my phone down.

"Thanks." She flashed me a smile.

"So he had really bad breath?" Cortez asked smirking.

"Yes, the worst things I have ever—"

"You know, I don't have bad breath at all. Do I Dylan?" Cortez interrupted her.

I looked at him amused "Yeah you do actually. Why do you think we broke up?"

Dawn laughed and Cortez rolled his eyes at me "You're such a sarcastic bitch."

"But you banged this sarcastic bitch." I shot back.

"I swear it's like you guys go out. You're perfect for each other." Dawn said pulling a mirror out of her purse and examining herself.

I scoffed and Cortez said "We're best friends Dawn. We tried going out and it didn't work. I prefer best friends than a girlfriend."

"He doesn't believe in relationships." I said rubbing my eye careful not to smudge my eyeliner.

"Nope." Cortez said popping his lips on the p.

"Do you guys still fuck?"

"Nope." We both said at the same time.

"I don't believe you." Dawn said closing her mirror.

"Just because we kiss sometimes and flirt most of the time doesn't mean anything. We're both big flirts." Cortez shrugged.

"You guys going to that party Friday?"

"Yeah." Dawn sighed.

"Don't you seem pumped about it?" I said clapping my hands together with a big smile.

She rolled her eyes "It's just because Connor is supposed to be there and he keeps calling me."

"You're too nice. Just tell him to fuck off. Or would you want me to—"

"No, it's okay. I'll take care of it."

"Or you can go as my date?" Cortez wagged his eyebrows at her.

"As friends, of course." Dawn said after glancing at me quickly.

She thought I didn't catch it but I did. I don't understand why she thinks I'm in love with Cortez. Maybe because you guys act like you go out. We've known each other for damn near 13 years. She just thinks you'll get jealous and snap on her if she makes a move. Whatever.

"Sure, whatever." Cortez said.

Just as Dawn was about to say something the bell rang signaling first period. Luckily I have all my classes with Cortez. He sweet talked the secretary in the office to change all his classes to mine.

"See you in lunch Dawn." I said getting up grabbing my book bag and falling into step with Cortez.

He wrapped his arm around my shoulder and I wrapped my arm around his waist putting my thumb in one of his belt loops letting my arm rest there.

"I don't get her. She's cool and all but I don't know why she thinks I'm in love with you. I mean come on; I don't even see myself falling in love for a long time. Maybe not until I'm in my mid twenties. I don't even want to fall in love. Ever."

"Yeah but it's going to happen Dylan." He said pushing pass the freshmen to get music class.

"Totally, I secretly want my prince to come and find me and then we'll ride off into the fucked up sunset."

"I think Dawn likes me. That's why always looks at you before saying something to me."

"She's obviously jealous of what we have. She likes you and she knows that if I wanted to be your girlfriend I could and she envies me for that."

"Trish told me that Dawn doesn't like you because I like you and I don't even really give her the time of day. She doesn't understand that we're just friends and that's all we'll ever be and I don't want to be in a relationship at all. Ever."

"Yeah but it's going to happen Cortez." I smirked.

"Shut up. That's why Dawn doesn't like you."

"I don't really care. It's not like you would go out with her anyways. She has an okay body but she would just be a screw."

"You know me so well babe." He said tapping my ass.

I laughed slightly as we walked into class and breaking up to sit in our seats.

"I hope all of your Spring Breaks were good." The teacher, Mr. Aston, said sitting on the counter.

They were mumbles around the room and then he shushed everyone "So I told you guys about the project we're about to start. I hope you guys did research on your instruments because we're starting today."

There were groans around the room and I leaned back in my seat at ease. I didn't need to research because I already know how to play my instrument, the piano. I begged him to let me play the guitar but he had already six people playing the guitar.

"Okay I will be teaching how to read music today and then next week we'll learn how to write it." He said and then that's when I tuned him out.

I watched him and acted as if I was listening until the bell rang.

Throwing my things in my locker I headed off to lunch sixth period.

"Hey Dylan." Sarah said walking into step with me as I walked down the hall.

"Hey Sarah. What's up?"

"Nothing much. Headed to lunch."

"Have you seen Dawn? I really need to talk to her."

"Uh, nope." She said shaking her head "Is she mad at you?"

"I don't think so." I shrugged.

"She was telling me that she's jealous of you."

"Because of Cortez?" I asked rolling my eyes "Whatever. I'm cool with Dawn and if she had a problem with me she should be real enough to confront me about it, right?"

"Yeah, totally." She nodded in agreement "Do you think Cortez would be interesting in dating—"

"Nope."

"You didn't even let me finish."

"Didn't need you to finish. Cortez doesn't date. He fucks."

"Well do you think he would want—"

"Ask him yourself, kay?" I said in a nice voice then moved around her to walk ahead of her leaving her behind.

I found Riley standing in line talking to Cortez as I approached the lunch room. I walked over to them and wrapped my arm around my sisters' shoulders.

"Dawn's been talking shit." I said in a bored tone.

"She always talks shit. But she's a cool ass chick. That's why I hang with her." Riley shrugged wrapping her arm around my waist.

"I don't really care. But if she wants to fuck, I'm all for it." Cortez smirked winking at me.

"I think Sarah wants to fuck." I said moving up in line.

"Super hot Sarah with the nice legs?" He asked.

"Yeah."

"Hell yeah." He said pumping his hand.

I laughed rolling my eyes then walked down the line and paid with my school ID at the register.

I walked over to our usual table where Austin was already seated. I sat my tray down and looked around to see who was in the lunch room already. Katie spotted me and stood up waving me over to her table but I acted as I thought she was waving so I put on a big smile and waved back "Hey Katie."

I sat down and I heard Austin laugh a bit as I sat down.

"What's funny Austin?" I asked opening my water bottle taking a sip.

"All these people are your friends but yet you don't like them. I don't get it."

"Some are annoying and some of them are pretty cool."

He didn't respond and Riley sat next to him with a small smile and Cortez sat on the side of me.

"Hey guys." Dawn said sitting down and Cortez looked at me with a smirk.

Dawn sat next to me and not next to Cortez for a reason. "Can we switch seats?" Cortez asked me.

I arched an eyebrow but didn't question him and got up switching seats. Great, now I get to sit next to Austin.

"Hey babe." Cortez said throwing his arm around Dawn pulling her close.

"Hi." She said with a smile and her cheeks turning red.

I picked up a few fries and ate them and took a few bits of my sub. I looked at Dawn and she glanced at me then down at her food then glanced back at me and asked "What?"

"You've been talking shit about me."

"No, I haven't—"

"I didn't ask. I just simply stated it." I said picking up another fry. "Why are you jealous of what Cortez and I have? I mean you're a cool bitch but you're being pretty desperate and you know Cortez doesn't do relationships."

"What? I'm not being desperate." She said shrugging Cortez arm off her shoulders.

Cortez looked at her feigning a hurt expression and Riley and I shared a small laugh.

"Whatever, but I'm hearing shit. I don't believe it but I'm going to confront you on it if I'm hearing some shit."

"Okay whatever Dylan." She said rolling her eyes.

"Why don't you want a relationship?" Riley asked Cortez.

"Well you see—"

"He's going to say the same thing Austin says." I muttered chewing a fry.

"You don't want a relationship either?" Dawn asked Austin.

"Nope, it's too much when emotions get involved with sex." Austin shrugged leaning back in his chair.

"I try to explain that to girls all the time but they don't understand." Cortez shrugged taking a sip of his juice.

"But what if you happen to fall in love?" Dawn asked with a innocent face.

Riley laughed and Austin smirked "I don't really believe in love. Not for me. I don't want to fall in love anyways."

"Oh god you sound just like Dylan." Cortez said.

"What?" I asked.

"You don't want to fall in love."

"Okay what's wrong with that?" I asked.

"When you get older who's going to be there for you? Who are you going to grow old with?" Riley asked looking at Austin and me.

"I'll grow old with all the guys I fuck." I said sarcasm laced in my voice "I'll just grow old alone."

"I agree." Austin said.

Riley rolled her big blue eyes and started talking to Dawn about the party this Friday. I'm so tired of hearing about that party.

After ten minutes I got up ready to throw away my tray. But I didn't even get to walk to the trash because all of my trash was now over me. Only because this stupid invisible skateboard decided to appear when I wanted to stand up.

The cafeteria erupted in laughter and I stood up and Riley was at my side cleaning me up.

"Shut the fuck up!" Cortez yelled and mostly everyone in the cafeteria did get quiet except one ignorant guy who kept pointing and laughing.

"Cállate estúpido." Cortez yelled getting up.

"What are you going to do about it?" The guy asked getting up.

"Alejandro." I said sternly looking at him.

Cortez flipped off the guy before sitting back down.

I picked up the tray off the floor and threw it in the trash successfully this time. "You okay Dylan?" Riley asked.

"I'm fine." I said through gritted teeth as I made my way back over to the table.

"Whose skateboard is this?" I asked stepping on the edge of it so it could stand up. I picked it up and flipped it over holding it in both of my hands.

"It's mine." Austin said with an amused smirk grabbing it from me.

"Oh well thanks for placing it there." I smiled shoving it back at him.

"I'm sure he didn't mean to—" Riley started but Austin cut her off laughing bitterly.

"Oh no, I put it there on purpose." He flashed me a grin and then said "I had to do it; you're just so dreamy."

"I love you too Austin. I just fucking love you." I spat sitting down in my chair.

"Don't flatter yourself Dylan." He smirked.
