Shallow Grave

The ground is getting richer.
Thank God.
I didn't want to bury her in anything
but the moistest soil, the most
nutritious grave.
I spent the whole day digging her bed,
my eyes clogged up with dust like sleep.
Afterwards, I had a long shower,
to get the soil out of the fissures of my skin.
When my labour was done, I was pleased.
I lowered her into the mouth of the grave
as gently as I could, but I
am only one man, and it was hard.
It was night.
I kicked the soft earth over her, tucking her in
like a blanket,
and a little further off,
I buried the tools as well.
Then I walked back to the car,
grinning and smacking my hands,
knowing she was safe and well.
