Chapter 07

Birthday Boys Get The Best

It's another average day. I wake up, shower, get dressed eat and leave. As usual Ben's out in front of his house by the time I get there and hops in, ready for the day. He hums softly as we drive towards the school and I find myself continuously peering in his general direction. He seems unfazed by my continuous peering and continues humming.

"Why are you humming?" I ask when he holds a high note.

Ben blushes slightly and stops humming. "Sorry, didn't realise I was doing it."

I grunt and jerk my head to show that I understand because, well who hasn't hummed without realising?

"Since when do you grunt?" He asks with his head slightly tilted.

"Since always." I say and furrow my brow.

"The last time I heard you grunt was when you were talking to your dad and trying to act manly."

That is so not true. . . I grunt all the time. Like the other day when . . . um . . . or that time that I . . . Er. The other day In Physical ed when the basket ball hit me in the chest really hard. Yeah see I grunt. . . Who am I proving this too?

"Whatever. We're here." I huff and open my door.

Ben leaps from my car and rips up the path, knocking helpless students to the side.

I wonder why he's in such a rush. I race after him, squeezing through disgruntled teenagers, and fly through the door. I turn down the many corridors in search for Ben. I fly down the halls, straight past Mossy and May as they hang around their lockers. The only time I slow down is when I catch Luke picking up a dropped piece of paper by his locker. A sight to remember. When I finally run into him he's rummaging around in his locker. Mossy and May make their way over to Ben and I. May, Mossy and I nod to each other before watching Ben with smiles on our faces.

"What're you doin'?" I ask with a sly grin.

"You know what I'm looking for." He snarls, his happy mood gone.

"Well well. Some one looks happy." Mossy says with an equally sly grin.

"Don't mess with me guys." Ben says with a warning tone.

"We don't know what you're talking about…" May says as she looks at him thoughtfully.

Mossy, May and I send each other knowing grins then start to whistle suspiciously with off tunes.

The bell signals the start of classes so we hastily make our way down the hall, leaving Ben at his locker.

"I think he knows." May says as she unlocks her locker and pulls out a butterfly pattern box.

"Couldn't possibly." I say smugly and pull out a poster wrapped up into a cylinder shape.

Mossy grunts a little as he pulls out a box with a soccer ball and football pattern on it.

"Operation Ben-will-never-know-what-hit-him is a go!" I shout as we all put our free hands into the middle of our circle. When we break from our circle I quickly hunt down Ben as he makes his way to his next class then follow him there. When I find out what class he has from one of his class mates I duck away from the class room and its windows and wait for his teacher. It doesn't take long for Mr. Mason to arrive and when he does I hand him the rolled up poster and a small note with instructions. I head down the hall and check my schedule for my next class, Science.

Well it is science… Mr Bennett won't mind if I'm like fifteen minutes late right?

I turn on my heels, stealthily make my way back to Ben's class and peer through the window on the door.

"Good morning class, I trust you're all done with your home work and are ready for today's lesson." Mr Mason says as he places the poster on his table and pushes his glasses up from the bridge of his nose. "Before I start the class I have an announcement to make." He clears his throat and eyes the paper in his hand. "Dear Benjamin, Happy, HAPPY birthday. Love Sammy." When he finishes reading the note he glances around the room until he spots Bens red face. "Benjamin I believe this is for you." He says as he holds up the poster.

Ben hastily stands, cursing to himself as his chair screeches against the floor, and makes his way up to the teacher's desk. He gets a few 'happy birthdays' from random people sitting around him as he attempts to take the poster back to his desk without hitting the helpless civilians around him. He burries himself in his text book so he can try and hide his beat red face, a futile effort.

I laugh teasingly at him when he finally notices me and flips me off while no one is looking. Maybe I should have recorded that for Mossy and May. Man I can't wait to see the look on his face when he sees what I got him. He'll be so happy and he'll love me and give me cake. Mmh cake. . .

After I wipe up the drool pooling at the edges of my mouth, I start to make my way back to class, seeing as I'm more than a few minutes late now.

"Why are you late mister Miles?" Mr Bennett asks as I try and sneak into the lab unnoticed.

I cringe and try and think of an excuse. I was busy embarrassing my friend with a public display of affection? My cat just died? I was held captive by masked mad men?

"If you can't even forge an answer from that damaged brain of yours then perhaps you should be in another class. . . but since you're stuck here I guess I'll have to just have to give you a warning." I sigh with relief after he says he'll let me off with a warning and make my way towards my bench. "I'm sorry Miles but your lab partner isn't here right now." Alright free bench! "So you'll have to be partnered up." Crap. "Luke is the only other person in here without a partner so you'll be paired up with him."

Since when was he in my science class? I quickly scan the area for the blond and sure enough there he was in the very back. I make my way towards Luke's bench and quietly sit next to him. I try and force the image of Luke picking up paper from my head as he leans back on his stool. Maybe it wasn't such a good idea to remember that event. . . Oh well.

"So where were you?" he asks with a grin but before I can answer his face turns serious. "Trent wasn't giving you a hard time was he?"

I smile which lightens his serious face a little, "No, I haven't seen him all day. I was just pulling a little prank on Ben, that's all." A cheeky grin crosses my face as I recall Ben's beet red cheeks.

Luke grins too then leans on the bench in front of us. "Nice, wh-" He starts but is interrupted by Mr. Bennett loudly clearing his throat to catch our attention.

"Anything you want to share with the class boys?" He asks as a few students giggle around us.

"No sir." I say in monotone. Luke snickers at my childish response and flips open his book so he can copy out the procedure for the experiment. I sigh and pull out my textbook and copy the procedure into my book as well.

The rest of the lesson is relatively uneventful bar the occasional joke that Luke told me while the teacher was distracted.

"Hey later today we should meet up or something." Luke says with a smile as we leave the classroom.

"Yeah that'll be fun." I reply with a smile as well.

"See you later then." Luke says as he glances over his shoulder at me, then walks into the distance while I continue straight ahead, which might not be such a good idea while I'm still watching him walk away. And just like I predicted it wasn't a good idea because I run smack bang into a tall black hair boy, causing us both to hit the ground and drop everything we were holding. As paper falls next us we both franticly apologise about not looking where we were going. I guess that means he was distracted by something else as well which helps make me feel like less of an idiot but then again the people laughing around us isn't helping my ego. I brush my hair out of my eyes and attempt to quickly pick up all of my dropped paper to be sure I don't lose them or that Trent and his friends don't walk by and take anything.

After picking up most of papers I handed the other guy what I was sure wasn't mine then tried to collect what was left of my dignity by standing up calmly.

"Sorry again I guess I'll have to watch where I'm going next time." I say once more then rub the back of my head while tightly clutching my textbook and lose papers in the other hand.

"It's fine, really I wasn't looking either." The other boy says with a small chuckle as he straightens out the paper he had picked up.

By this time every one that saw our little collision had grown bored of the fact that we didn't rip each other's head off the rest of the primates in the group of onlookers had dwindles to about one or two on lookers that were still hoping for a fight.

"Uh, see ya then." I say with an awkward grin and head towards my locker where I was greeted by Ben.

"Why. The. Hell. Did. You. Do. That!" Ben growled through gritted teeth. It took a moment for what he was talking about to click into my mind, what he was talking about being my little birthday surprise, and when it did I smiled sweetly back at Ben.

"What don't you like my present?" I asked with a pout.

Ben glared before turning his nose up at me. That either meant he loved it but was still mad or he hadn't opened it yet in fear it was something embarrassing as well that his class would see like a poster of a naked man. Damn why didn't I think of that earlier?

"So… Who's the cutie?" Ben asked with a cheeky smile.

"Just some guy I bumped into." I sighed and opened up my locker. Why can't I look where I'm going?

"Really?" Ben said with an amused look on his face.

I rolled my eyes and started to stuff some papers into my locker so if I fell down again they wouldn't fly everywhere.

"Now I must admit he was cute and it was a nice view when he was picking up the papers I'm sure that MY secret lover could top anything that you would run into." He said smugly as if challenging me to a 'who can get the hottest guy' contest.

"I dunno up close that guy is pretty damned sexy, he had his hair in his face and had these beautiful hazel coloured eyes…" I drifted off a little to make sure Ben would be wondering what he looked like up close just to tease. And I'm pretty sure it was working because he was looking out for the black haired, hazel eyed boy.

The bell sounded again to signal that everyone had to finish getting things out of their lockers and move off to their next class. Ben and I parted ways as we moved off to our different classes.

"Hey." Luke called as I passed his locker.

"Hi Luke." I replied with a small smile.

Luke waved his friends good bye and quickly caught up with me, following me to my locker.

"Why'd you leave your friends? It's only me." I inquired as I unlocked my locker.

"You make it sound bad that I actually want an intelligible conversation and didn't we agree on hanging out?" he said with a grin as he leaned on the locker next to mine.

I scoffed at the fact that he not only realised how dumb the jocks were but he also thought that we had intelligible conversations. Since when was flirtatious jokes, and me stuttering out of embarrassment an intelligible conversation? Wait did I just admit that I flirt with him? As I slid my books into my locker the papers that I had crammed in there before slid out, spilling onto the floor.

"Great." I mumbled then bent down to pick up the papers that littered the hall way. After a moment Luke joined in and helped me pick up the papers, making the annoying mess gone by the second pile of papers the only thing on the floor was a pink envelope. . . What? I don't remember ever getting that and I definitely didn't have that earlier today. Before I could examine the strange envelope Luke picks it up and quickly looks over it, reading it out loud.

"To my Dearly Beloved, from your secret admirer?" He read aloud in a slightly questioning tone. "This wouldn't happen to before me would it?" He said with a cheeky grin that caused my cheeks to blush.

"No I didn't write it, I've never seen it before." I tell him as I tried to snatch it from him, but failing due to the height difference and the fact that he held it high above his head so I couldn't reach it.

"So it's for you?" it didn't really sound like a question, more like a statement. He starts to carefully open the envelope, making sure not to rip it, and pulled out the letter inside. He pauses for a second before turning to me with a small smile on his face. "Why didn't you tell me you had a secret admirer?" He asked and although he looked happy he didn't sound so happy.

"It's not mine." I reply defensively, not wanting him to get the wrong idea but I think my defensiveness made it worse.

"What do you mean? This was clearly intended for you it was in your locker." He said, sounding slightly pissed off.

"I don't see why you should be getting angry- wait, wait… are you jealous? Is that why you're getting angry?" I ask him. A look of shock crosses his face after my accusation but he quickly covers his face with his default angry face.

"I'm not jealous I just don't like being lied to!" He snapped as he waved the love letter around. Sure look jealous. Ha kind of reminded me of one of those crappy t.v. dramas where the wife catches the husband cheating via love letter.

"I'm not lying! I must have picked it up by mistake." I say in my defence.

"Oh really and how are you supposed to mistakenly pick up a love letter from your locker? You're a really bad liar." He sighs.

I wracked my brain over how I got that damned letter then it hit me.

"That guy!" I shouted then looked around to see if he was near.

"So you do?" Luke asks, a little surprised by my outburst.

"No you idiot." I snapped and continued even though Luke was glaring at me. "I ran into some guy this morning after science and we dropped our papers, I must have picked it up then… Let me see it." I snatched the paper from Luke's grasp and quickly read over it. The hand writing matched! "Show me the envelope." I demanded and took that from him to. I couldn't help the ironic laugh that burst out of me.

"What's so funny?" Luke asked as he looked over the letter again.

"All this time we've been looking for this guy that has been giving Ben love letters and the one day we don't look I run into him and pick up his next gift. Look idiot it even says 'happy birthday' on the front." He must have been looking at Ben when he ran into me.

Luke blushed lightly I assume because he was embarrassed and felt like an idiot. I carefully put the letter back into its envelope and closed my locker. After I was sure it was locked we left my locker to go look for Ben in the cafeteria.

"Umm sorry for thinking you were lying." Luke mumbled as we made our way towards the cafeteria.

"I'm not forgiving you that easily you owe me." I say with a grin. Luke looks at me slightly confused but doesn't protest to owing me anything like I thought he would have. When we enter the cafeteria Luke and I quickly make our way over to Ben who looks like the happiest person in the area.

"Hey Benzy." I say as I hold the letter above his head, "Guess who gave you a birthday present."

Ben's eyes light up as he spots the letter. Then he snaps out of his mini trance, "When the hell did you go through my locker!"

Luke flinches away from Bens snarl and death glare. But I'm relatively unaffected because, well, he's always like this.

"Relax Ben I didn't go through your locker. I simply bumped into him and accidently picked it up." I say with a small grin.

Ben's eyes widen in a comical proportion and his jaw drops. "You met him! Like, in the flesh! Who is he! Where is he!" he blurts as he jumps from his chair, catching the attention of a large majority of the cafeteria.

I sigh heavily then sit down across from Mossy and May who are watching Ben and me closely. "Sorry but I didn't get a good look at him I only bumped into him and picked this up by mistake."

Ben blows out a heavy puff of air then sits down in his chair again. "Y'know you really got my hopes up." He pouts a little then snatches the letter from my 's taking this better than I expected. I thought he would have flipped a bitch when he found out that I ran into the guy of his dreams and didn't remember who he rips open the letter and pulls out the content. It only takes him a second to read the letter. After he reads it he puts the letter on the table then fishes out two little tickets.

"Oh my god!" He squeals. "Spa tickets!"

"What!" May and I shout and dive to his side.

Ben stares at the two tickets happily as May and I attempt to read it over his shoulders.

'Flowering Lotus Spa ticket

One day and one night stay in our guest suite at Flowering Lotus. Spa retreat includes: massages, herbal baths, manicures, pedicures and refreshments.'

When we finish reading May and I fall to our knees.

"Please, please, please take me with you!" We both beg.

Mossy and Luke scoff at our begging and a grin slides across Bens face.

"I dunno I mean there are a lot of other people I could take." He says as he casually fans himself with the tickets.

"C'mon I'm your best friend!" I blurt and latch onto his side.

"So am I!" May adds as she glares at me the wraps her arms around Bens arm, causing Luke to growl a little.

Of course Ben doesn't notice this and continues to tease us. "I could always just use them both… One for Saturday… and one for Sunday."

"C'mon Ben you know how much I love being pampered." I whine and attempt to give him puppy dog eyes.

"Ben please I'll give you those jeans you really want." That bribing bitch how am I supposed to compete with jeans he's wanted for months.

Ben taps his finger on his chin and looks up thought fully. "Well that is tempting. . ."

"C'mon it's not like Luke would let her go with you anyway he doesn't even trust me with her and he knows me better than you." I huff then point to Luke who looks a little shocked to be pulled into this mess.

May begins to glare daggers at Luke. "He would." She snaps and continues glaring.

"I would not." He growls back and crosses his arms.

"Oh really? Well then Maybe we should have a little talk… and if you don't walk to talk I'm sure Sam's more than happy to learn a thing or two." She says with a evil grin. Damn that girl can be scary with all her blackmail and crap.

Luke looks at her angrily before exhaling heavily. "Whatever I'm out of here."

Luke turns away from us and casually walks back to his normal table across the cafeteria. That damn bastard doesn't have any balls. If he did he'd stand up to his evil sister and help me get pampered.

A/n Yeah It's been ages TT_TT and I didn't even finish the day. So many unanswered questions like:

What were the other presents?

What's in the poster?

What is Luke keeping secret?

Who is the hazel eyed guy?

Who will go to the spa with Ben?

And why am I taking so long?

I can't guarantee these questions will be answered but I will try. (I don't even know where this story's going. . .)
